Void Ray

The reunification of the Aiur Protoss and the Dark Templar has allowed the two groups to combine their divergent technologies, and their collaboration has produced astonishing new developments. The Void Ray is built around the newly developed prismatic core, which serves as a virtually eternal power source. When the Void Ray has locked onto a target and deployed its flux field projectors, it can shoot searing beams of energy that grow exponentially more powerful over time. Even heavily armored structures and warships have been incinerated by the Void Ray, leading some Terrans to believe that it will eventually replace the Carrier as the flagship of the Protoss fleet.

General Strategy

  • Armored craft that can attack air and ground targets.
  • Highly effective against armored units.
  • Vulnerable against large numbers of enemy units.
  • Void Ray sneak attacks against enemy headquarters can be devastating.
  • Use the Prismatic Alignment ability against armored units to deal extra damage to them.

Countermeasures

VS Terran
  • Launch Vikings; their long air-to-air range will make it easy to bring Void Rays down.
  • Use large groups of Marines with Stimpacks and Medivac support.
  • Build Missile Turrets around your Command Center as a temporary deterrent.
VS Zerg
  • Spawn Mutalisks; be sure to focus fire.
  • Assemble a large number of Hydralisks.
  • Build Spore Crawlers around your Hatchery as a temporary deterrent.
VS Protoss
  • Engage with Stalkers. Research the Blink ability in order to move away when Prismatic Alignment is activated. Engage again while the ability cools down.
  • Phoenixes are great against Void Rays, which are too slow to outrun them.
  • Build Photon Cannons around your Nexus as a temporary deterrent.

when youre attacking someone thats missile turret crazy qand they have a good anti ground army this is what you should do: get both carriers and voids and send the carriers ahead,so when the missile turrets focus on the carriers interceptors the voids can wipe em out

This is the post i made in the forums but i feel that i need to post it here too. Its a prob us toss cant run from

Protoss in our long battles vs The OP terrans and the angry swarm with have forgot to arm ourselfs vs the greatest cheese of all time. The VOID RAY. Just last week i was in a FFA with some friends and my scouts spoted a mighty fleet of Void Rays about 30 mins before they came for me. I prepared the following stalkers, senties, phx and and a few VOIDs of my own. my troops were max upgraded and i had senval holos to beef up numbers and yet... The unupgraded voids won. Fellow protoss we have nothing that truly counters VOID RAYS!!!!!

@victra: they aren't that OP for new players, i mean i'm new and i got rushed with mass void rays, but with mass stalkers it was pretty easy to win.

i love void rays. once a terran opponent broke through my gateway-wall with like 30 marines and 10 medivacs but i had like 5 void rays and destroyed all his tructures before he could, so i won. NEVER GIVE UP!

Those are just the most annoying unit in Starcraft 2 when you mass them, i'm not saying OP, but annoying,
And please, respect that : Massing ANY unit (rines, stalks, Voids, mutas, etc ) is just for people who can't play, same for rushes, i'll give you an example :
1 immortal and 3 stalkers (no upgrades anywhere) = 625 mins, 250 gas, you can beat up to 8 stalkers which means 1000 mins and 400 gas, just do some counters

Forget about its overpowerment for a second and think about this:

"The Void Ray is built around the newly developed prismatic core, which serves as a virtually eternal power source."

If that is true, then why can't they use the prismatic core in EVERYTHING? I mean, it would be so cool, never having power outages, or having an unit run out of energy.

I disagree. Any number of Void Rays can be countered in a number of ways that include but are not limited to lots of anti-air defenses. Void Rays are interesting in that if you attack them while they are at full power, and roasting building after building of your base in quick succession you are going to take some serious damage or die. However, if you wait until they are done with your base and lose their charge you can beat the hell out of them with the same force. And just so we are clear, I am talking about a force of 15 or so Stalkers or about the same amount of Vikings or Mutalisks.

HARD?!?!?!? IT'S NIGH IMPOSSIBLE TO COUNTER 30 VRs COMING FOR YOU!!! You might as well just gg as soon as u see 20 or more unless you have mass rines or tons of AA.

@Gates: If you let your opponent make 30 VR, and it took you by surprise, you've clearly done something wrong.
As Tharcas said, it is possible to counter it. There are many ways

As Zerg:
-Use Hydralisks. Attack them, and when you see they have fully charged their beams, just burrow and let them rage
-Mutalisks Are just as effective, maybe even more with the bounce attack. However, retreat when they are fully charged

As Protoss
-Stalkers. Blink away when they charge
-Use the Aid of Sentrie's Guardian Shield
-I would include phoenixs, but they arent as good, as they do little damage, and are fragile. However, microing them you can put some serious pain in the voids

As Terran.... Vikings, no further explanation needed.

However, the most efficient way to counter 30 VR is far simplier... Beat your opponent before it happens. Scout him, and if you see he is going for Heavy Rays, just prepare yourself, and attack him before he can build up his army

@VoodooChild: You generally wont see mass voidray cept on bronze level of play and if you do its generally from a player going off of 2 base. The easiest counter is simply scouting, denying any further expansion (judging by the fact that they're massing VRs they'll be unwilling to risk much), and mass expanding. Soon as you have enough gas invest in a lot of Infestors probably the best hard counter to mass VR is the infested Terran. You burrow a few Infestors down out of sight of the VRs and pop up alot of IT's and you've spent no money on a hardcounter army to deal with the voidrays and haven't had to deal with the losses. Then just steam roll.

@JetfirePrime: mutas, arnt that good against them, marines rip them to shreads as do vikings good enough number and blink stalkers. Phoenix will not counter the void ray though. its designed to take out other fighters like it I.E mutas. Its not supper affective vs all air.

@XbiozZrgfoev: Actually, voids are painfully slow. A group of marines or vikings of equal cost can take them just about every time. Also, hydras do well against them. I play toss (Gold league), and I only use them to hold back big stuff like thors, starships and ultralisks.
