| We sometimes deploy World of Warcraft Launcher patches during non-maintenance periods in order to resolve various urgent issues. Unfortunately, a side-effect of these patches is that users may receive "Unable to validate game version" messages for a short time thereafter. These situations should auto-resolve after a very short period of time; just keep trying. We appreciate your patience. If these issues persists more than an hour past the deployment of a launcher patch, please continue with the troubleshooting below. Thank you! |
If you are receiving the "Unable to Validate Game Version" error message, you are not running the latest version of the World of Warcraft, you are attempting to log in with an unmerged WoW account, your game files have been modified in some way, or the servers are undergoing maintenance.
This error can occur if the World of Warcraft account you are trying to login with has not been merged into a Battle.net account. After November 11, 2009, you won't be able to log in to the game unless you merge your account with a Battle.net account. You will need to log in using your Battle.net account username (your email address) and password. To create an account, please visit our Battle.net Account Creation page. For information on merging a WoW account into an existing Battle.net account, go here.
It is possible that you may have a virus or program which is modifying files on your computer. Please first ensure you are launching the game using the Launcher.exe which can be found in your World of Warcraft folder (default location is C:\Program Files\World of Warcraft). Additionally, we recommend running scans of your system to clean out any malicious programs. We recommend that you use Malwarebytes to check for the common trojan-keyloggers that target our games.
If you are still having problems after scanning your system for trojans/viruses, we also have a repair utility that can check your files and replace any files found to be corrupt. You can usually find the Repair tool under World of Warcraft in the Start menu. The Repair tool can also be found in the World of Warcraft folder on your hard drive.
If you continue to receive this error, we will need you to fully reinstall the game before trying to log onto the game servers again. After fully uninstalling the game and removing the game directory from the hard drive, please reinstall the game and connect to the game server. It should download the latest patch automatically, and once it has applied successfully, you should be able to log into the game again without error.
