Cataclysm Preview: Tol Barad

An island off the coast of the Eastern Kingdoms, Tol Barad is a historic land now sought-after by the leaders of the Horde and the Alliance. Its strategic, isolated location makes it an ideal stronghold from which to conduct military strikes. The Fight for Tol Barad

Similar to Wintergrasp, Tol Barad will serve as an open world PvP zone, although there is also a hub on Tol Barad Peninsula for both factions to complete daily quests. Reachable by portals in Stormwind and Orgrimmar, or via a level-85 mage teleport or portal, Tol Barad will accept up to 80 players per faction to engage in brutal combat across the island's surface. Unlike Wintergrasp, Tol Barad will not have Tenacity buffs. Instead, the queue system will attempt to match each side at a 1-to-1 ratio. Battles will take place every two hours and thirty minutes, giving the offensive faction a chance to claim territory.

Tol Barad will feature capture-point gameplay. There are three keeps and three towers for the defending side to hold. When destroyed by the attackers, each tower will add five minutes to the standard fifteen-minute battle timer. In order to win, though, all three keeps must be captured and controlled by the attackers. If these keeps cannot be taken by the attacking forces, the defending faction will claim victory in Tol Barad. Similar to Eye of the Storm, Tol Barad determines whether a keep has been captured by the number of players from each side in the immediate area. There is, however, a new twist: each time a member of your faction is killed in the immediate vicinity of a keep, a slider bar will move slightly in favor of the opposing faction. So not only does the size of each force in the area determine who controls each keep, but losing allies during the contesting process determines control as well.

In order to destroy the defenders' towers, attackers will have access to an all-new type of war machine: Abandoned Siege Engines. Six of these Siege Engines will be placed around the map, and these vehicles can be used to bombard the towers. In contrast to the Siege Engines of Wintergrasp, these machines cannot attack players or buildings while the vehicles are being driven. Instead, players must drive them within range of a tower and jump out, allowing the vehicle to transform into an automated cannon that can lay siege to the tower. The Abandoned Siege Engine will continue to damage the closest tower in range until the machine is destroyed by opposing forces.

To the Victor Go the Spoils

Players who win the battle for Tol Barad will be awarded honor points in addition to Tol Barad commendations. These commendations can be used along with new reputations as currency with special vendors who sell rare and epic items, mounts, and more. In addition, the controlling faction will have unique access to extra daily quests. Similar to the Vault of Archavon, Tol Barad gives those who control it the chance to form a raid and best foul beasts locked within Baradin Hold for precious rewards.

Questing for a Living

Aside from the battle to control Tol Barad, there are many quests available to both factions just off of the main island on Tol Barad Peninsula. Members of the Horde will assist Hellscream's Reach, an all-new faction vying for control of Tol Barad. At odds with the Horde are Baradin's Wardens, an Alliance faction also seeking to command the territory. Six unique quests, randomly determined from a larger pool of missions, will be offered daily. This will allow for diversity in completing quest objectives as you explore Tol Barad Peninsula over time. The faction that controls Tol Barad will also have sole access to six additional daily quests. Completing each of these exclusive quests will award experience, gold, and Tol Barad commendations. By accomplishing these tasks, players will learn of the perilous inmates held within the prison on Tol Barad, as well as why this isolated land is of great importance to Hellscream's Reach and Baradin's Wardens. In addition, increasing reputation with these new factions will grant access to incredible rewards.

With so much at stake in the wake of the Cataclysm, Tol Barad will be fiercely sought-after by the Horde and the Alliance, but it's up to you to help determine which side makes this island the next great military port of the Eastern Kingdoms.

On my server TB is nothing more than everyone on Def. races to WV and turtles then picks off people coming up the stairs. Large groups of players will drop group, form a secondary raid so people waiting in Q can now join so one side has a large numbers advantage. When TB first started it was fun, now people have had time to figure out the holes in the system and its become a joke.

Im glad theres tol barad as a bg and a daily quest place connected together named: Tol Barad Peninsua. Looks awesome there. Keep it up ppl that are in there, Get much much gold! Have fun!! :D(P.S:Be careful of tank on the waters...Hes an elite 46 watevar.)

People seem to complain a lot. Nothing is perfect but on Cairne in Tol Barad we are all (both Alliance and Horde) are ruthless at killing each other even after the BG is over (for a few minutes at least). Dropping Battle Standards as some fights are all out head to head where we almost forget what we are fighting for just to battle each other. Even AV gets crazy like this where each faction will fight it out for a few yards back and forth winning the BG there based almost 100% on kills alone. It is madness but a blast just the same.

I finally get to 85 to see what the hype is about and turns out that it just might be the worst bg of all time. I think a good fix would be... I attempted to come up with a fix but it seems like this bg is far too flawed. I think a good idea is to change the concept behind the BG. I propose uneven sides, not numbers of players, but the map. Make towers mean something. The destruction each tower result in a de/buff that favors the attackers. Each tower’s destruction would grant significant de/buff, (15% less life, less damage, less cast/atk speed). People would defend those towers because they would now mean something. Then upon destruction of 1 tower, 1 base becomes vulnerable. Let's say the towers had mages channeling a magical barrier around the base next to them, but now they're all dead. Then a battle for that base begins, if lost it's unrecoverable (now losing a base actually matters), and the fight proceeds to the next tower, which its destruction would yield another debuff. Then they fight for the unrecoverable base. Then the last tower, another debuff, fight for the base. If the time runs out and defense still controls a base, defenders win. This map is exciting, it can easily be adjusted to make the sides have similar chance to win, by adjusting how much time the attacking side has to take over all the bases. There can still be chaos, the attackers may choose to assault all 3 towers at once, or one. By the end of the bg, defenders should be dropping like flies trying to hold out until the timer runs out. There might be a game where there's 1 tower and base remaining, and 5 minutes on the clock. Everyone is fighting for the tower. The attackers have buffs on their side, and the defenders have time on theirs. The map should be made so that the attackers if all things are equal are able to destroy the first tower, maybe start the attackers with a 5% attacker’s damage and haste increase buff. Of course if the defenders are much better players than the attackers, maybe a tower will not be destroyed, but atleast the attackers lost because they weren’t the better players, and not the fact that the map was poorly thought out. Now that I think about it, this is kind of similar to AV. But helpful constant de/buffs will only help attackers, nothing can be reclaimed by defenders, there’s a time limit, no bosses, fast AB style base take overs (not slow AV ones). A map that favors attackers makes sense too because it helps rotates factions position, so they’re not always attacking or always defending.

I have fought this battle over a hundred time and it is really bad fight...the timing is bad, first, the rez times dont make sense, one time you rez in a few seconds and the next time 30 sec...the timing for taking over the flag, you get a control message but the flag is not your for another 20 or 30 secs...This is an impossible fight if the defending side plays properly...It should never have passed beta as it is...I wonder if the developer played in a group of 20 people a dozen times trying to win...I think not...Change it and it could be fun...Now it is just frustrating...

@Loritor: The respawns spawn you out in waves. There's a timer always counting down from 30 seconds. The point of this is so that you enter the battle with your fallen comrades in WAVES, instead of piecemeal to be picked apart by the enemies. (Unforunately from my time spent on the alliance, it doesnt matter. 1 holy priest will still run into a group of 20 horde alone).

Anyone know how the que system works? I know it is NOT first que first go. Is it random like I have been hearing? You can que the sec it comes up... but can't get in if you are not "lucky" enough?? Rediculous!

i agree with Iamu. I like getting honor and gear as much as the next guy but i like to feel as though ive earned my honor and what is the point of buying pvp gear with honor if all you are going to do is sit around and look stupid during the time you should be using it? Another thing people need to learn is the idea of pvp is ALLIANCE VS HORDE. Not Horde and Alliance form treaties or whatever they do and to get themselves free honor. The entire idea is just dumb. I personally think the entire concept of pvp is now ruined in Tol Barad

OK , me again . So , Blizzard has now made it so the winners get 1800 honor per win , and guess what has happened ? A tea party between the Alliance and the Horde on my realm ! Both factions now take turns , and just stand around to let the other faction win . Thats right , no one fights or tries to stop caps ... everyone just stands around and dances or does other stuff like mining and weeding . When this map first came out , I was very impressed and had a great time , lots of action and balance , people having to earn thier points/gear , but what is it now ? A joke . I'm not sure who was on the concept team on this idea but they need to go back to sweeping parking lots , as they will make a greater contribution to the game . Why Blizzard? Why do you always take a great idea and then cater to the easymode crowd ? Why do you just give away things for free to players who don't want to work for it ? How HORRIBLE .
Instead of making better players , you have made an army of softy bads who will never lift a finger to earn thier gear . Worst part is that now I have to listen to them all epeen in trade channel about how 'badass' they are in thier new gear . I suggested one extra player per loss until a win , at which point the balance is reset . Maybe even an achievement at +10 . Its not even worth signing up for now , I'm embarrassed to even stand on the map . You can all troll me as much as you want , I don't care anymore ... tired of trying to make people better players and then it all goes to waste because of poor ideas like the +1800 per win no fighting lets have a dance party weakminded ideas that flow from the people who eat too much sugar .

You can look me up on WoW-Census and see for yourself , but clearly your too stupid to do that and instead you have wound up looking like a complete fool . People , again let me point out another baddy player to you all . STAY AWAY from players liek this , all they can do is gripe and whine and QQ , but can't back any of it up with facts or skill . Just another lonely person who need to find a different hobby than failing as a forum troll . LOL @ fails like Babysitter. People have a good look at his comment .
1. He feels a skin change of a battleground will make him a better player.
2. He can't win in TB so it's just a horrible map . LOL . Not once do I mention in my post that I feel it will be 'nerfed' or that I fear it will be . DERP!
3. He says I QQ'd in my ticket , I read it again and I don't see anywhere about QQ.Kid can't read and has low comprehension skills.
4.He says 'honor farmer'. Hey everyone pursuing honor to aquire better gear is wrong , because a 10 year old baddy child says so LOL. I enjoyed a new bg map OMG somehow that makes me an honor farmer.
5.Babysitter clearly is too stupid to tell the letter I from the letter L , who the hell is Lamu LOL :) .
Anyways people , in closing I'll just point out how players like Babysitter are the ones you want to stay away from. When I mentioned 'baddys' in my earlier post , this is exactly the player I'm warning you about . DO NOT BE THIS PLAYER . When you see a player like this in a bg , report /afk and place on ignore , he will only bring you loss after loss . All I want to know is who the hell rolled his toon to 85 for him ? LOL @ the stupid baddy :)
