Threat Needs to Matter

Threat Needs to Matter

A tank’s job is to protect the group. A big part of that is controlling the enemy. A big part of controlling the enemy is staying alive. Tanks have a lot of tools to stay alive, and mastering those is a major component of learning to play a tank. On the other hand, some of these tools are on long cooldowns, and on some encounters they are intended for use at specific moments in the fight. Furthermore, staying alive isn’t the sole responsibility of the tank, because there will always be one or more healers present whose job it is to keep the tank alive. As such, staying alive can’t be the only thing tanks have to focus on.

So, let’s back up a moment to controlling the enemy. “Control” includes things like positioning the boss, or doing specific things at specific times, such as swapping with an off tank. It also includes making sure the boss doesn’t attack anyone else. That’s where threat generation comes into play.

If threat generation is too easy then the entire risk of the encounter drops. Newsflash: we don’t actually want encounters to be easy. We want encounters to be fun, and for most players, that includes both rewards and risks.

We want tanks to care about the buttons they hit instead of just relying on auto-attacking to control their target. We don’t necessarily want very complicated tank DPS rotations, because as I mentioned above, tanks do have other things to keep track of. But we want their combat abilities to be engaging. Good tanks should be those who control, survive, and generate sufficient threat.

On the other hand, when threat is too hard to maintain, it can be exasperating. Tanks get understandably frustrated when the game is asking them to do something but not giving them the tools to do it. The non-tanks in the group also become frustrated, because they feel throttled. It’s one thing when overcoming the boss is challenging. It feels worse when you know that another player is standing in your way, keeping you from achieving your top performance.

We don’t usually want DPS classes to have to stop attacking in order to keep from generating too much threat. We do want players to pay attention. We don’t think it’s too much to ask for DPS and healers to wait a couple of GCDs for the tank to get the enemy under control -- we’re not asking for five stacks of Sunder Armor these days. What we really mean by proper threat management is knowing things like when it’s time to go all out, when it’s appropriate to use a threat-reducing cooldown, and most importantly, which is the right target to be attacking. I’m not trying to bash pugs here, but I am amazed at how often a nuker will pick a random target instead of the one being tanked, then blame the tank for not holding aggro (and then blame the healer when they die). In short, if threat is too easy, the game is boring. If threat is too difficult, the game is frustrating.

How then do you guys (and the developers!) know when threat is a problem? Here are some handy guidelines.

-- If a tank is trying to generate threat on a single target, and it runs off to kill a DPS class, that’s a problem.

-- If a tank is trying to generate area threat on a group, and the tanked things are running off to kill healers, that’s a problem.

-- If Vengeance falling off causes the tank to lose threat, that’s a problem.

These problems can have a couple of causes. It could be a problem we caused, meaning that even an expertly-played tank has low threat generation because our numbers are undertuned. Or it could be that only an expertly-played tank can generate threat because you’re asked to manage too many abilities. Or it could be that Vengeance is the only thing allowing you to generate enough threat because the size of the buff is masking low threat generation from your abilities. It could also be a problem you need to fix on your end: if someone is nuking or cleaving a random target on a group pull instead of assisting the tank, that’s not the tank’s fault.

Now, there are things we don’t like about threat as a mechanic. It’s fairly gamey as game mechanics go and we think there are probably better ways to communicate it to players. There are some mods that do a very credible job given the limited information we provide, but overall we’d like to present threat better since we’re asking you to take it seriously in the PvE game.

@Rumblenbeast: Nothing will stop people in this game from doing that. It's just not that friendly a community. I tank for guildies only. No more PuGs.

Great post! I agree with my fellow players, DPS classes should read this. I have played a tank, healer and DPS (all at level 80 and beyond). When you walk a mile in another classes shoes it is very educational and you have a lot more respect for what they do!

@Chuzpah: agreed. been dpsing for a long while, then tried tanking and healing, and you end up seeing everything in a whole new light. especially when you realize that aggro generation is not a "given" just because one is a tank. I have a whole new appreciation for tanks and healers now.

As a tank there is nothing more frustrating than the Nuking DPS. this is a must read for those DPS that love to just shoot blindly at everything without there being and consequence to there action.
IMO i think everyone should try to tank, just to give some empathy to what the tank has to do to gain control of a mob or a situation.

As a tank, I don't find it frustrating for a DPS to pull aggro. I played DPS characters in Vanilla and BC. Now if a DPS gets ballsy and pullls aggro, I just assume he wanted to help out by tanking that mob. If the healer tries to heal said DPS and dies next, then I shadowmeld and wait for everyone to run back. Life is good. Although, since threat was cut down (which is good) it seems as though our threat is throttled. Having a cooldown on almost everything kinda stinks.

Wish you were dedicating time to fixing other problems in the game like Tol Barad for starters instead of writing articles that have information available on the forums.

What's the old saying? Oh yeah, I remember now. "If the tank dies it's the healer's fault. If the healer dies, it's the tank's fault. If the DPS dies, it's their own dang fault so pay attention!"

I totally agree with this. I think the biggest thing that bugged me about WotLK was that threat was WAAAAYY too easy for tanks to keep hold of. i think the game would be a lot better if it was actually challenging. ive been a tank since Vanilla so i know the difference between difficulty and easiness in the game, and difficulty is deffinetly the funner way out.

Although I am not an amazing tank, I am level 36 and have wiper twice throughout my dungeons. I do this because I am okay at knowing everything going on at the same time. Let me share some of my knowledge. First thing, always stay in defensive. Second, between enemies, open up the fight on the Elites, not the normal enemies. Third, hit the casters before anything if all Elite or all normal. Fourth, Try not to AoE too much, as it will generate small threat for a short time that will be easily broken by a heal or a Sinister Strike. Fifth, move one to the other, do not try to keep equal threat on everything at the same time. Sixth and lastly, As soon as something you have on you leaves, whether running in fear or attacking another teammate, kill it first before you blow it off, it could kill your healers/d.p.s, or bring friends to an already difficult fight. Have fun tanking, doing damage every second, or keeping people alive! :)

What i've noticed as the biggest problem tanking isn't dps stealing threat, i personaly don't have trouble holding agro, and when its stolen, hand of reckoning brings 'em back to me. It's the monsters that ignore agro, that at random, while threat meter says i have agro, it turns and unleashes huge salvoes at healers or dps. It's almost as if threat isnt a factor in those fights and the tank has to just be a 4th dps and pray that the heals dont die lol.

Reading through this made plents of sense. I usually find that so far, yes warrior tanking is much different than the Dk's "death and decay" or the pallys "conc" by thunderstomping as soon as the CD is over. etc. but i find alot of the time a dps will pull aggro off me, or dont wait until i "Have" aggro. for example: I run into mob, warlock (aff) instantly uses Seed of curruption and doesnt wait until i have aggro. then complain and leave the group saying im a bad tank. but no complaints here with the insta ques hehe :P

I agree with this article :D
It's really frustrating when a DPS attack some random target and not the one that's been tanked... And blame us, the healers, that we didn't save him/her D:
Some DPS believes that because there's a healer and a tank, they are inmortal and they can take out anything, anytime... and when they fail, they blame:The tank for not getting the aggro/The healer for not healing at time...

Almost every time i have wiped in Cata heroics so far its been the tank's fault.
A typical heroic queue goes something like.... queue pops, zone in and buff up, get to first pull, you set your CC up, tank charges in, breaks all the CC that was put up with AOE, take dies, you wipe, tank calls everyone else a dumbass and leaves group, back to another 30 min queue while that same asshat gets another instant.

@Sasekis: I was guilty of that same move my first heroic tank, then i learned to throw a symbol above the ones to CC, then pull the others to me rather than going to them, that way my AoE doesnt hit the CC ones. The main problem with PUGs is no one communicates most the time, you have to talk things through, if you dont know the pull then ask before you run in, it may take a while longer, but slow and steady rarely wipes. :D

Great article and many valid comments. Something to keep in mind is that there are those of us that played in vanilla and BC when CC was required, but we've adapted to our AoE abilities well and can tank groups effectively. I've had a number of PuGs ask for CC, but we've blown through an instance (on normal) in around half an hour without it without wiping because I can do my job. If someone does nuke something they shouldn't, I'm able to grab agro back and use my abilities to keep it on me. So if after a few pulls it's clear your tank knows what they are doing, have a little faith and enjoy the ride.

That said, heroics are a different story and CC is vital. watching PuGs throw down AoEs and breaking CC (this ISN'T Wrath! Time to L2play!) These runs take longer and require patience. Wrath handed players crap on a slab for too long and I've seen people just expect to blitz everything without dying. Play smarter, not harder and you'll get your loot.

And before you abuse a tank or a healer about your dying, check your combat log first. Chances are that crit you're so damn happy about bought your ticket to the GY for you.

as a DPS sometimes i find myself drawing the argo of the mobs when, when that happens i prefer it when the tank lets me know to ease up on the DPS so they dont have such a hard time controlling argo. id rather a tank tell me to ease up b4 a boss fight rather than after a wipe, also we're teammates. i cant help my teammates if my teammates dont communicate w/ me and just point fingers. i love all u tanks out there noobs and pros but just let the DPS know when theyre drawing to much argo at times,

As a community, I think we could all use to learn from experience. Newbs, like myself, are now attempting to gain experience into the role of tanking, but have no available source of guidance.
If you know "How-to Tank", share your wisdom! Spread the education, let others know what spell rotations, and course of action to be used. Instead of just flipping out and voting someone off the party, attempt to help them out, explain things, and try not to use acros.
