Upcoming Class Changes

We have a lot of players at 85 now doing everything from Heroic dungeons to rated Battlegrounds, and the class design team is starting to prepare our list of items to investigate for our next patch.

Before you dive down into the meat below (not really a pleasant image, that), be advised that we’re still early in the preliminary stages. The patch isn’t coming out tomorrow. I wrote this before the end of the year and other things may have cropped up in the meantime. Just because your class or pet problem isn’t mentioned below doesn’t mean we won’t address it.

PvE

We’re happy with damage overall. We have very few traditional tank and spank fights (even Argaloth likes to parry melee) so it’s hard to get consistent numbers without very large data sets. Still, we see Survival hunters and Unholy DKs on top of a lot of single target fights. Arcane, Marksman, and Beastmaster damage is too low. Retribution, Shadow, and Fire and Frost mage damage might be too low, but we’re still watching them. We aren’t seeing a lot of Subtlety rogues in PvE yet, so that sample size is still small. On fights where there is a lot of area damage, Demonology warlocks, Frost DKs and possibly Survival hunters are all too high. Shadow priest AE, mostly due to a weak Mind Sear, feels too low.

Healing in PvE is working out pretty much as intended. There are some Heroic dungeon bosses that are probably tougher than the required item level average permits. In general, you might have a tough time upon zoning into a Heroic dungeon with a bunch of strangers as soon as Dungeon Finder permits, especially if your group isn’t willing to communicate and work together. We want Heroics to be challenging -- if you want to zerg the content, stick to normal dungeons.

Tank balance overall seems good at this point in time. Threat seems to be in a good place -- good tanks don’t have much of a problem, but they can’t “phone it in” either. We’re seeing all four tanks get a lot of use, even on Heroic raid fights. That could change as more guilds are able to make serious heroic attempts.

PvP

The larger health pools, decreased impact of Mortal Strike debuffs, and slower healing are all having the desired effect in PvP. Burst damage has its place, but doesn’t determine the outcome of every encounter. There are several individual abilities that we aren’t happy with in PvP.

We’re keeping a close eye on dispels. We still like the design of making dispels more of a commitment rather than liberally sprinkling around dispel resistance or consequences for every class. Defensive dispels (removing a debuff) generally feel good, but we think offensive dispels (removing an enemy buff) feel too powerful, especially for DPS specs. In particular, Purge and Spellsteal will probably get nerfed.

We’re also looking at crowd control, interrupts, and self-healing in PvP. It’s possible we’ll reduce the durations of some crowd control effects, especially the area effect ones, and decrease the duration of interrupts.

Priests are a little weak in PvP, especially at mobile healing. We have made some changes to glyphs and talents to enhance their survivability and instant healing.

We also want to make sure the epic PvP gear isn’t too easy for just anyone to obtain, given that the PvE endgame content is more challenging than it was in Lich King. We don’t want the player base to just migrate to the most efficient epic delivery mechanism; we want you to participate in what you find most enjoyable.

Stats

We’ll make a pass to make stats that aren’t attractive (but are supposed to be) more attractive. For example, we don’t want Assassination rogues to dismiss crit or Feral tanks to dismiss haste. We are considering making some physical attacks such as Lacerate, Steady Shot, and Slam scale with haste.

Mastery is a new stat for us, and there are a few specs that don’t value it enough. In some cases (e.g. Combat rogues), the design for mastery is fine and we just need to buff the effects to make it more desirable. In others, we don’t think it’s possible to buff mastery enough in its current form. For example, the Retribution mastery, Hand of Light, is fun, but it doesn’t contribute enough damage. To make it contribute enough damage, the proc would need a very high chance, which then can cause paladins to devalue other sources of Holy Power. Instead, we are redesigning Retribution mastery to add a percentage of the damage of Templar’s Verdict, Crusader Strike, and Divine Storm as Holy damage (which also plays better with Inqusition). Because Hand of Light is fun, however, we are going to change Divine Purpose as a chance to proc Hand of Light instead of a chance for extra Holy Power (which will also remove a little of the randomness from the rotation). Unholy DKs are another spec for whom mastery just isn’t working out. Our current intent is to redesign their mastery so that their attacks cause more damage to diseased targets (in a similar manner to the Restoration druid mastery).

Potpourri

Some additional class-specific tweaks (keeping in mind this is not the full list):

  • Even after we fixed their mastery, Feral druid bleeds still do a lot of damage and are undispellable. We plan to shift some of that damage back to main attacks. They are also a little too hard to control. Given that they are already hard to root, snare, or polymorph, we think the fear immunity from Berserk is too much.
  • Arms warrior burst damage might still be too high in PvP, while we don’t have a great way to adjust their sustained damage for PvE. The Lambs to the Slaughter talent is a good place to address this. We also might nerf warrior stuns.
  • We think Arms and Fury warriors are getting too much damage out of Heroic Strike. We want it to be clear that it’s a rage dump and not make it the hardest hitting ability.
  • For Holy priests, we’re increasing Chakra’s duration and changing Surge of Light so it can now benefit from Flash Heal and Greater Heal and can crit.
  • We’re making some additional buffs, such as Pain Suppression and Barkskin, undispellable.
  • We’re buffing Wild Mushroom. It’s a cool spell that isn’t getting enough play.
  • Empowered Touch will now benefit from Regrowth as well. We’re also buffing the Glyph of Regrowth.
  • We are looking at Holy Concentration (after our most recent buff) and Omen of Clarity to make sure they don’t account for too much mana savings.
  • We are probably going to remove Drain Mana from warlocks. It is incredibly situational in PvE but causes problems in PvP. This might mean we need to evaluate Mana Burn as well.
  • Inferno will no longer increase the radius of Hellfire.
  • Shadow and Flame can now proc from Incinerate in addition to Shadow Bolt.
  • We want to redesign Improved Soulfire.
  • Censure will no longer break Repentance.
  • As part of the Marks and Beastmaster buffs, we’re buffing Aimed Shot, Kill Shot, Chimera Shot, and Kill Command.
  • To reduce mage control, we are discussing reducing the duration of Frost Nova and Ring of Frost.
  • We want to make it clear that Combat is intended to use fast off-hand weapons. We also want to polish Revealing Strike a bit.
  • We want to make sure Enhancement shaman avoid caster weapons.
  • We want to make sure Unholy DKs prefer two-handed weapons.
  • Necrotic Strike needs to be affected by resilience.
  • For Cataclysm, we changed Death Strike almost completely into an ability for Blood DK tanks, which is a bit unfortunate. We want to make sure it is still a useful button for Frost or Unholy DKs who need healing.
  • We also want to address DK mobility in PvP.
  • We think we overnerfed Every Man for Himself, and are reverting it back to a 2-minute cooldown again. We might evaluate other racials after we’ve seen more PvP.

“GC, is this the final list of changes? Does this mean I can expect no changes for my class? Does this mean you don’t care about me?”

No. This is some stuff we are looking at so that you’ll have some context if you see changes on a future PTR. The final list of class patch notes for the next patch will doubtless be much longer.

and omg poor warriors blizz u are complete hipmicrits towards warriors its sad how their op in one patch but nerfed in the next one mages had been the main topic for 2 years and they still hadnt been nerfed to the point where there soloable unless the mage is undergeared blizz u say ur listening to us but u really arent lol.

once again blizz u dont understand about how to nerf a class . u dont buff the healing or the survivability. try to make it so their killable atleast nerf the fact shadow can fear and dot. it wasnt like that in bc through cata why should they have that option now it isnt fair

@Sérj: Warlocks can fear, and DoT, because thats what they do... Are you going to ask for rogues not to have stuns next? Jesus. Just use Hand of Freedom, or your bubble.

Lots of skills can break CC's like fear.

Blizzard is it possible that you could put a change class payed thing into wow . and you would have to make it so that someone could not just keep doing it with a DK.

Ghostcrawler, what are you going to do about ele PvP? We currently have the worst damage as a caster and get shut down the easiest. We need a complete remake of our spec. It's terrible. Our CC is bad, our damage outside of cds is bad, and when we do pop cds we get shut down by every class in the game. Not to mention though, we die faster then any other caster. Elemental forums have been open for 3 years begging for a change so we can be viable in arenas. When will this come?

Just make Aimed Shot and Chimera Shot hit harder and put Power Shot on a 25 second cool down and Marksmanship will probably be viable for arena again.

would like to see a feature that prevents people from going into a dungeon Que unless they have a minimum set rquirement for stats. For example, rolling a new toon, ive seen a Fury Warrior with a two handed weapon Que as a tank when he shouldve been prot. Ive seen prot pali with shield que as dps. If u arent geared correctly, nor in the right spec u should NOT be ABLE to que as a tank. At lv 80 a feral druid was able to que as tank but refused to run bear form...At lv 80 I seen an arms warrior que as tank...Ive seen DKs and Prot Pali's in the proper spec Que but have BNO clue what to do to get their dodge and parry and mastery right. I think perhas a minimal requirement such as a Min of 12% or 13% dodgae and parry should be put in place. IEven if a properly specced and geared tank Ques, they STILL get the group wiped when they are so squichy a healser cannt keep them alive. And they should have a minimum requitremnt for hit and expertise as well so theuir threat will allow them to hld aggor. Please..make MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS for people to be abkle to Que as a tank...Or ANY class for that matter.

The only thing I see wrong with this game any place is the stun abilities. These abilities are way way way too much on each of the classes that have them, especially rouges. I have two minute cooldowns on the only two counterspells to these stupid stuns. I can get stunned by these rouges, as in one fight one on one just a few minutes ago, I was under some type of spell that took all (ALLL) control of my character away 5 times in less than 60 seconds. Now that is absurd I mean really, that is absurd. I was dead before I could even think about fighting back... This is really ridiculous and really needs to be either taken out or significantly reduced in duration.

@Marvaline: I disagree, that's a horrible idea.

That would allow people to roll a tank, steal everyone else's gear, get to 90 super fast, then switch classes. That's the last thing anybody wants.

boomkins need more spells to get away in pvp combat. because once were stuck we get destropied unlike say a mage who has several 'get out of the area' type moves

@Whiteøwls: If u are struggling with boomkin in pvp u nered to rethink ur strategy. One of the greatest fights I have had in two years of pvp was against a boomkin. he would knock me backwards a mile and by the time i got back to him he was fully healed and would have my hitpoints cut in half just getting to him...Then suddenly he would jump back simalar to a hunters with disengage. Boomkins that are ran correctly are a power force to recon with in pvp. They are very powerful. U just need to learn how to run ur class and learn that each class u fight agaisnt requires a specific strategy to win. On my boomkin I sdominate. Idominate on ANY class I roll. Then again, Ive ran one of each to leanrn the strangths and weaknesss of each.

If u are wearing ur pvp gear in a PVE raid or dungeon but doing excellent work, u will still get kicked... if a PVE geared pvp noob comes into a bg, you cant do anything. That, needs to be fixed. period.

@Mommavoodou: Unlike PvE, BGs are the only way to get geared for PvP. PvE you can do dungeons, and if you're doing decent numbers then you shouldn't be getting kicked.

@Mudslash: Wromg/....If u are doing PvE and are wearing PvP gear...it doesnt matter what ur numbers are, u need oto be kicked because u make the healers job much harder. The resilience on PvP gear takesthe slot of other very important secondary stats. Stop being lazy and go run some reg catas to get JP to get some PvE gear and stop being a noob wearing PvP gearin PvE.

@Eilistræe: I agree...I do suggest that honor points be rewarded a bit more generously. It takes a thousand BGs before lv 60 -70 just to be able to gain ONE piece of PvP gear. At lower levels we dont have the PvP gear option but we should at least be able to stock ple honor points more efficiantly so we have the opptioon of obtaining pvP gear once its acvailible to us per level. So many players go uinto BGs at lv 70 and up wearing PvE gear because they werent able to acquire the points they need to get PvP gear. they HAVEE to roll in PvE gear because they have no other opption until they finally get enough honor to get some pvp gear. I agree we should be able to kick under geared people from the BG groups jsut like in a dungeon. At times we face a loss just because of 2-3 HORRIBWLE players that wont work as a team and are under geared and wont learn from others

@Zarkona: Exactly. More than once in a BG, a troll with the flag in WSG would hog the flag, claim he was stuck and/or his mouse/keyboard died, and he couldn't drop flag. We ALWAYS lose. Those people need to be kicked.

why debuff warriors? they just going to make fury 100k crits again lol... blizzard we only have 2 stuns and charge is like 1.5 sec... the stuns arent that OP if anything thats what is making people still play warrior rather then reroll

I am geared mostly in 397 gear. i have all heal and some dps gear for priest but i pull better dps in my heal gear than i do in my dps gear. Is it a matter of havin all the gear or what. But i rarely pull 20k dps. Most often i pull 13k to 16k. I usually rank around 15 to 18 in rfinder. If any1 wanna check my toon and give sugguests feel free.

ya to be honest dk's and hunters seem to always pull 30k and it stinks when i barey push 24k in better gear the staff quest is too much troule to work towards til fl is nerfed seeing others in worst geaar then me but pull ungodly dps is said hunters/ dks seem to just faceroll 30+ k dps all the time

@Marlora: Work on ur roptation...Gear only takes ur damage so far. Learn what abilities u have stack versus over ride each other. Learn a better rotation. if ur geared in lets say 397 gear...U should be pulling 30k if ur geared good and ur rotation is correct. Learn how to spread ur shadow abilities to other targets, learn the ones that stack, and learn the tick on your dot abilities to ensure they arent sitting idle. make sure they are ALWAYS operating to cause damage and u sbhould be fine with the right rotation

Nerfing warrior stuns? Are you kidding me? Arms have one stun? A usual Ghostcrawler you don't nerf your beloved class. Nice job scrub. Nerf anyone that poses a threat to your precious class. Whats next for them complete heals? New mage stun? LOL dude you just need to hang it up.

In all honesty, I feel rogues need a slight backstab buff, to make it more attractive in PvP. As of now, hemorrhage rogues are getting a large survivability one-upmanship on us arena-specced rogues, and they still have the controlled burst of backstab specced rogues. Also, since it requires more of an effort to pull off a backstab than a hemorrhage, It is only fair that we are properly recompensed, since it is a real pain against the more mobile classes, like druids.
In exchange, however, we should see a reduced proc rate on instant poison, for in a PvE situation, it's pulling the largest numbers, aside from my auto attacks (in combat spec).
Also, a slight buff to tank's main damaging abilities should occur, for their pvp value, since, while it is not their job to deal damage, gimping them via vengeance nerf was a bit harsh. the only exception to this rule should be blood dks, since they use a 2hander.
the only way around this, would be to give blood DKs access to shields, an idea I doubt would appeal to you guys in the office.
Also, I think a large mana cost for druids' shapeshifts should occur, since healers will just morph to bear when pressured. It should be an extremely large cost, to make it unviable by healers, and unusable more than once by cat specced DPS. lets say, a 20k mana cost to enter bear form, and a 10k cost for cats, therefore once a druid hopped into bear, they would be unable to swap back to kitty mode.
Finally, I believe a buff to unholy burst is in order, for it is simply not able to compete with the massive crits that frost can pump out consistently.

@Bloodnroses: ok to sum this up none of your !@#$ u asking for will happen cause that is absurd and will screw classes over and if u think about it this way your talking about duels if u cant beat some1 in a duel don't play it play 2s,3s,5s honestly dont come here and ask for stupid nerfs and you shouldn't really be asking for a unholy buff if u play atleast over 1550 in 2s/3s/5s their pressure is insane so please think before you post
