New Player Tips: Press 1 For More Options

New Player Tips is a recurring feature in which we ask World of Warcraft veterans to share their thoughts and advice for new adventurers on a variety of in-game topics.
This week's topic is: key bindings.
Key bindings are a staple for many World of Warcraft players due to the flexibility and mobility they provide. Instead of clicking an icon in their action bar or navigating through a menu to use an ability, players simply press a key on their keyboard or a button on their mouse, saving them time and extra steps in the heat of battle.
While certain key bindings are preset, like W, A, S, and D (for movement), many players prefer to re-map these bindings to keys they like better. For example, some change their movement keys to E, S, D, F to open up additional key-binding options. While this is all easy to do, figuring out what spells/actions to bind or re-bind can sometimes be overwhelming, and it can take a lot of experimentation to figure out the best layout for you.
What advice would you give new players who are interested in improving their play with key bindings? What keys or commands would you recommend binding, where would you place them, and why?
If you're unfamiliar with the process, let's go over some basics. First, here's how to open the key-binding interface:
- Open up the Game Options menu by pressing the "Escape" key or by clicking on the little computer-shaped icon in the navigation bar on the bottom right of your screen.
- Click on the "Key Bindings" button to bring up the key-binding interface.
Now, here's how to bind a key:
- Locate the command or action bar button you wish to assign to a key on your keyboard (or to a button on your mouse) from the key bindings list.
- Click the button in the column labeled "Key 1" next to that command/action bar button.
- Press the key on your keyboard or the button on your mouse that you want associated with that command/action bar button.
- Click the "Okay" button.
So, for example, if you wanted the 5th slot on your primary action bar (Action Bar 1) to be bound to the "E" key, you'd scroll down to the Action Bar Functions section, click the button next to "Action Button 5", press the "E" key, and then click "Okay". Now, any spell or ability that's in that 5th slot can also be activated by pressing "E" on your keyboard.
Lastly, if you want to unbind a key, the process is fairly similar:
- Locate the bound command or action button from the key bindings list.
- Click on the button in the column labeled "Key 1" next to that command/action button.
- Click on the "Unbind Key" button near the bottom of the Key Bindings window.
- Click "Okay."
- If you want to reset your key bindings to their default settings -- this can be useful if you accidentally unbind the "Escape" key, for example -- click the "Reset Default" button, also located near the bottom of the Key Bindings window.

Anyone have any ideas? Similar experiences? Something somewhere in the new computer that I need to change? It's a Windows 7 64-bit... but that didn't matter on the crappy Dell i returned... the mouse and WoW got along fine.
Any help is welcome so I can get my keybindings back. Once you bind, you never rewind... all this clicking is killing me! LOL

/ delete and insert to target nearest enemy / jump. I use the symbols above numpad 7 8 and 9, and also use my mouse button 4 and 5 for important spells ( stealth on rogue, bubble on priest) and I click the mouse scrolling thingy as a finisher( rogue) or another emergency type ( pally or priest ) Im glad there are guides out there to help new players keybind, its worth it

next i use the addon via curse client BARTENDER4 which allows you to really customize how and where you want your castbar to look and act etc.
there are also a few places on the web which explain how to write out a basic attack macro for those who don't like the whole rotation deal and prefer doing something else for non raid combats.

Besides that I bind every key that is within reach of my left hand on the keyboard plus all the keys on my mouse to different spells and macros (macros are pretty useful too).

1, 2, 3, 4 (Modifier Shift 1, 2, 3, 4, Modifier Control 1, 2, 3, 4) (12 buttons)
Shift Q, W, E, R Control Q, W, E, R (8 Buttons)
Shift A, S, D, F Control Q, W, E, R (8 Buttons)
Z, X, C (Shift Z, X, C Control Z, X, C) (9 Buttons)
5 + 6, Shift 5 + 6, Control 5+ 6 (5 + 6 are programmed into macro mouse)(6 Buttons)
also use shift left/right click, control left/right click. arrow keys are my buffs (fort, shadprot, inner fire/will)
Also have them all memorized, so action bars are hidden on my screen :)

Imo when you start changing from the WSAD too much then every other game you play you have to freaking change all the damn keys all the time, until they make a big change to another type I'll stick with a slightly modified WSAD.
Another thing with multiple toons going on when you bind a spell to R or what ever try to have it be the same across the board like Q & E along with shift Q & E are AOE's and my mouse buttons tend to be a movement increaser or buffs like blink, rocket jump, charge, etc. That way wither you are on your mage or warrior, you will semi be the right ball park if you have a brain fart.

Mindset in PvP - "If I need to cast 2 abilities, run forward-left, jump, and click-target someone on my screen at the same time, do my keybinds allow me to do this?"
Example: Priest click-targets a tremor totem, uses pyro rocket, while simultaneously running/jumping into a pack of enemies in the arena to let out an un-tremored psychic scream.
With that mindset forth, the simple answer is: use f1-f4, use `, don't go past 5 or 6 on the numbers (depending on hand size), use Q and E (OR) A and D, and use other local buttons - z,x,c,r,f,v,t,g are great - shift/alt combinations are also acceptable (modifier-1 through 5 especially).
Finally, make easy rebinds - "R" is reply, let's make "shift-R" the new reply. shift-R was the old "resend" so let's make that control-R. "C" was character pane, so let's make that shift-C, etc!

If you use the mouse with your left hand, re-bind your movement keys to I-J-K-L or something similar; and then re-bind your abilities in a ways similar to those mentioned previously in this thread.
When I first started playing (a hunter), I moved with the arrow keys (WASD are just awkward) and used 5-9, -, = for my abilities. I could play a hunter and casters pretty competitively, but playing melee classes in PvP was more of a challenge. It wasn't until I rebound my movement keys that I was capable of playing with the same degree (or more >:]) of control and precision.

You don't need a special mouse, any mouse will do. The buttons on the mice have nothing to do with mouse turning being faster and more precise than keyboard turning (like any other game you would play).

Shift + those keys takes a bit more getting used to, and it will never be as fast, but those are great options, too.
F is in a great location as well, but the default function of that (target my target's target) is so useful I left it as the default. :)
Burning Blade
yeah... i use *cough* lets see here for common actions :
1,2,3,4,5,Q,E,R,T,F,G,H,V,X,Z,`,F1,F2,F3,F4,Mousebutton4
then
Shift+(F,C,V,R,T,E,Q,1,2,3,4,5,6,Space,MiddleMouse)
34 keybinds in total (I strafe with mouse+A,D for precision strafing) Mouse turn only - i DO use S to back up on my tank, but i mean i have 34 keybinds for spells/macros and i feel as if i don't have enough (I also bind 7-0, but those are cds i rarely use or click to use so my hand doesnt move too much)
I really need to add some more binds, perhaps binding C, and shift+C instead of haviing my char window, maybe even binding B and shift+B as well (we'll see when i need em ;) )

The facts are that the majority of users will utilise the Mouse to click their powers. And these users are at a major disadvantage against those who bind their powers to keys on the keyboard and know how to use them.
An entire industry has sprung up around providing Keyboards with Macro capabilities and special gaming mice with 12+ buttons to service this market.
The need to constantly turn to face one's opponent in the game is a big reason why there is such a problem with clicking powers. Your hands are in use with WASD and the Mouse...there is no extra hand to then move while firing your spells. So you have to start stretching fingers to do it.
Those that have the money to purchase Razer Naga or Steel Series Cataclysm mice therefore have a distinct advantage over those that cannot afford these devices.
A feature that would level the playing field is the ability when in combat to Follow a non-friendly target whether this be an enemy player or a mob. This will cause you to turn to face your opponent.
This will pose problems for Rogues/Feral Druids who's repertoire is aided by positioning themselves behind opponents, but the use of abilities that can be fired off can get around that [I'll not elaborate here]. This will make the game really based on in-game skill with your character, rather than give those with fast fingers or additional hardware an advantage.
Another way to look at this is that you cannot provide a default method of interfacing with a game, mouse clicking, which is completely inferior to another method: Key binding.
It unbalances the playing field greatly, and makes PVP Battlegrounds etc. far less enjoyable, and one consequence is that you have far less people playing PVP.
They go through 85 levels pressing powers in their action bars which is the way the game has always been presented to them, but when they reach PVP they learn that they are doing it wrong for 85 levels, because other players have fancy mice and combo keyboards,or are good at using keybinds on the keyboard.
And even with these keybinds they have over 30 spells to use, but nowhere near that many easily accessible keys. So you have to start Macroing, and switching hotbars...you spend more time setting up your keybinds, hotbars and so forth than actually playing the game. It's ridiculous.
There was obviously a problem in need of a solution. And Capitalism provided a solution. A HARDWARE based solution that we have to pay for. And Blizzard endorsed this solution (steel series cataclysm). Now, instead of adjusting the game mechanics with Cataclysm which they could have done, we are presented with a HARDWARE solution that we must purchase! A brand new style of controllers (Naga, Steelseries etc.) which have more buttons (and I submit are still inadequate).
Something needs to be done so that Keybinding is a luxury, not a requirement for play.
I propose that the solution is to remove the need to turn to face your opponent constantly with the mouse.
This frees up that input device for use with powers, while still allowing those who purchased additional peripherals to continue enjoying them save not with the unfair advantage it previously provided.

Would you say that you are also better than those who click the powers with their mice in PVP? I'll bet you are better than a clicker in PVP.
And that's really the point of what I was saying.
I think that there isn't going to be much of a difference in PVE...but the issue is really PVP in my view, where turning to follow an opponent is a huge deal.
And what I'm suggesting is that if we removed the need to manually turn to follow, even as an option that you can turn on or off, the advantage of keybinding and mouse moving would be removed and it will come down to knowing your class and its abilities.

You should never need to finger stretch, ever.
f1-f4, `,1,2,3,4,5,(q or a),(e or d),z,x,c,r,f,v,t,g, and possibly 6 + y. Add in that you can hold alt OR shift (most players will find at least one of these VERY convenient) for 1-5, t, g, r, c, and f very easily, gives you 30-32 keybinds right off the bat. Other suggestions:
1. scroll-mousewheel-up (I use this, even on Naga)
2. scroll-mousewheel-down (I use this)
3&4. modifier-f1 + f2
5-8. modifier-WASD's
9. modifier-spacebar
You're now up past 40 without stretching at all. Find me a class with 40 abilities where none of them are stupid BS (ie, stuff that you'd never use during PvP combat so you can bind them to really inconvenient binds!) and you'll prove to me that your proposal is somehow needed.
Duskwood
I have changed the keybinds for my bottom-left action bar, but only for my shouts, which are just as easily clicked in combat for the desired effect.
Point being, the default game mechanics have allowed me to enjoy the game without having to purchase additional hardware or extensively keybind. (though I did remove "R" as reply and made shift-R my flying mount summon.)
Auchindoun
I keybound "Zoom In" and "Zoom Out" to the arrow up and down keys.
1 - 6 for my main spells, Shift-1 - 5 for my cooldowns (Typhoon, Treants, etc.). Sunfire spam is a left hand dance. D:
~ is Auto-run. I don't trust Numlock anymore. Shift-~ is keybound to a button with an "auto-choose fastest form" macro.
Clique + raid frames are my friends for healing spells and CC spells.
