New Player Tips: Knowing Is Half the Battle

New Player Tips: Knowing Is Half the Battle

New Player Tips is a recurring feature in which we ask World of Warcraft veterans to share their thoughts and advice for new adventurers on a variety of in-game topics.

This week's topic is: "If I knew then what I know now."

Remember that time you walked all the way from Stormwind to Ironforge because you'd never heard of the Deeprun Tram? Or when your rogue accidentally rolled need on a caster dagger?

You were embarrassed, but you weren't alone: Everyone was new to World of Warcraft at one point, and we've all made our share of mistakes. Life on Azeroth is full of learning opportunities, and a tip from a more experienced player can help others avoid similar pitfalls.

Loading-screen tips like "You can eat and drink at the same time" seem obvious now, but many players might not have picked up on something like that on their own. As part of our ongoing New Player Tips feature, we want to know what advice you'd give a new player just starting out. Spread the knowledge around!

New players should not be afraid to ask general chat in a city. Not Trade, cause that is all trash. Make sure to add 'PST' or Please Whisper me at the end so you know people will not be mean.
Things to note:
Do not ask anything about the city like where certain trainers are. That is what guards are made for.
DO NOT ASK FOR MONEY! It's fairly easy to make some gold in the world. Just quest around, vendor grey items to NPCs, Sell green or better armor/weapons on AH, grab a profession like Mining or herbalism and sell them on the Auction House as well, Ect Ect.

And most importantly, if you are not sure about an item in a dungeon, ask the people in your party if you can use it.
Ex:
Blue Quality Dagger with Intellect.
You:"Can I use this dagger? I am a Rogue"
Leader: "No. It has Intelligence. You need Agility."

If you get a guild, make sure to inform them ahead of time that you just started playing. A guild is more than a group who kills dragons or murders Orcs, it's a group of players who want to have a grand time themselves and are willing to help out. Except do not ask for gold still.

Re; The Trinity
You should understand the three basic roles your character can play (4 sort of)

TANK: The role of a tank is to keep the enemy's focus on them and to not die. At present, pay little attention to damage and much attention to threat (tho the next expansion will cange that as i understand). Tanks need to not just absorb hits but to avoid them as well (through dodge and parry statsl). Every tanks class has a different priority for stats, so do some research. If the group wipes (ie all die) someone will blame the tank.

HEALS: Healers keep the entire group alive while paying special attention to the tank. Manage your resources so you can heal an entire fight and not run out of mana. f the group wipes, someone will blame the healer.

DPS (MELEE): Do research and make sure you talents nest serve your weapon type and vice-versa. Melee DPS often fight side by side w/ tanks but need to notinterfere w/ the tanks job, so make sure you get up to speed on positioning in relation to the tank. If the group wipes, someone will blame DPS.

DPS (RANGED): Learn what works best for the class/spec. If your class/spec used lots of DOTS, lead w/ them. You may get critisized for lower dps on short encounters, but you need to build good habits. If you are a nuke, lead with longest cast time spells usually, so you arent not wasting encounter time waiting for a spell to go off. Also understand that you shouldn't lose your lunch in chat because you have to move st times...sometimes tanks need to move a mab. If the group wipes, someone will blame the DPS

Don't spend all your gold save it for 85, only spend it on what you need only, Like food, and drinks, ect. At 85 you will be glad you did. I wish I knew this when I started.

I like these topics because I just joined wow about a month ago, and when I first started I was clueless, I just started walking around and exploring things, then I got killed by a monster 5 levels higher than me ( I was level 1 at the time :D) and I did not know how to get rezzed, (lol I looked on google how to), but what im saying is that WoW is very fun when higher level people help you, but sometimes I am in a dungeon, and dont know what to do, or someone says something in chat that I don't know what it means, even though I would like to talk to that person. After a month, though, I have learned a lot :)

@Mozed: the reason why you don't see the point is because you haven't been playing for as long as us. also hunters don't really need anything to help them. other then maybe a macro to pop all cd's

@Mozed: may be, but most likely, a key binder will beat a clicker any day, more effiecient, quicker reactions. rather than trying to find the ability, just hit G, not hard haha, you're disarmed while still looking for an ability

I think a good tip for lower level/new players is to level their profession as they progress. This seams obvious to most, but to a new player, it isn't. A new player is probably more inclined to simply ignore their profession and just level up; however, once they hit the level cap, they might regret not leveling their profession, for they are lacking in a solid source of income (e.g. farming herbs, cloth, ore, etc.). For new players, LEVEL UP YOUR PROFESSION with your toon! :D. It will save you the headache of farming low level areas for hours on end.

@Specialeddy: questing in the world less likely to run into some (or a group of) idiot(s) that don't know what your doing and end up quiting the dungeon or bg from the keyboard snaping frustration they cause. other than that all depends on how you like to play as to which is more fun.

The best advice is that the experienced players help out new ones without expecting something in return. I enjoy helping newbies, and I'm paying it forward from those who helped me as I was leveling.

How to get addons:
Addons are outside programs designed by people to make the game easier and more enjoyable. To get them, go to www.curse.com and download the latest curse client. Then open up your curse client and search the name of the addon you want to download. Just make sure you're on the "Get More Addons" tab. You can find descriptions of addons by searching on the curse website. Here are the highlights of my personal addon collection-
For Raiding - Deadly Boss Mods, Omen Threat Meter, Recount, AtlasLoot Enhanced, Healbot (if you're a healer), Quartz
For UI (User Interface- all the buttons and such around the outer edge of your screen) - Titan Panel, Sexy Map, Mapster, MoveAnything, RangeDisplay
For Achievements and Collecting - Overachiever, Collectinator, Rarity, _NPCScan, _NPCScan Overlay, Tabard Addict, Archy (for Archaeology)

1) If a monster drops something on the ground, move. Quickly. Doesnt matter what color it is, nothing good will come of it.

2) Dont waste your time farming for a weapon without fist finding out if it's main hand or offhand.

Amen lynda. Just once I wish it didnt have to come down to me selling my last pair of underooz for some gold in this game. I'm so glad I DO have the worlds best teacher though who occasionally looks up from the keys to tell me I'm running in the wrong direction. I'm going to eat his arms later. Yea.

@Lynda: Agreed. I rolled Need on an item in a 25 man DS (raid finder) and this guy won it out of about 10 people and traded it to me. no questions asked. I didn't have time to even say thank you before he left. :-))))

Use the "Dressing-Room" and have ppl link loot you might want to transmog because you don't want to waste time or gold trying to gather a piece for your cool looking set only to find it's not as good as you thought it would be.

What is stacking, anyway?

@Marg: It's when you and your group gather together in a tight formation, like stacking on top of each other. The closer you are, the easier it is for a healer to keep healing and y'all can take less damage that way.

How do I find a place that I haven't been to? I have completed all the quests in Wetlands and explored all places except Raptor Ridge. I like to complete all quests and explorations to gain the achievement awards in one area before moving on. I am wandering around trying to find Raptor Ridge. I am sure there is an easier way. Help, please. Thanks in advance

In my first WoW dungeon I hit "need" instead of "greed" on everything because I didn't want to look "greedy." I didn't realize that I was winning all the rolls and couldn't understand why everyone was annoyed at me. Ah, good times.

At my current lvl (83) i have the lowest hp in my dungeon groups, and i am wearing the best gear i can find, not to mention i can't compete on Dps in groups. what am i doing wrong?

Also, i have about 2000 justice points right now, spend them on BoA gear for my lower lvl toons?
