New Player Tips: Knowing Is Half the Battle

New Player Tips is a recurring feature in which we ask World of Warcraft veterans to share their thoughts and advice for new adventurers on a variety of in-game topics.
This week's topic is: "If I knew then what I know now."
Remember that time you walked all the way from Stormwind to Ironforge because you'd never heard of the Deeprun Tram? Or when your rogue accidentally rolled need on a caster dagger?
You were embarrassed, but you weren't alone: Everyone was new to World of Warcraft at one point, and we've all made our share of mistakes. Life on Azeroth is full of learning opportunities, and a tip from a more experienced player can help others avoid similar pitfalls.
Loading-screen tips like "You can eat and drink at the same time" seem obvious now, but many players might not have picked up on something like that on their own. As part of our ongoing New Player Tips feature, we want to know what advice you'd give a new player just starting out. Spread the knowledge around!

Things to note:
Do not ask anything about the city like where certain trainers are. That is what guards are made for.
DO NOT ASK FOR MONEY! It's fairly easy to make some gold in the world. Just quest around, vendor grey items to NPCs, Sell green or better armor/weapons on AH, grab a profession like Mining or herbalism and sell them on the Auction House as well, Ect Ect.
And most importantly, if you are not sure about an item in a dungeon, ask the people in your party if you can use it.
Ex:
Blue Quality Dagger with Intellect.
You:"Can I use this dagger? I am a Rogue"
Leader: "No. It has Intelligence. You need Agility."
If you get a guild, make sure to inform them ahead of time that you just started playing. A guild is more than a group who kills dragons or murders Orcs, it's a group of players who want to have a grand time themselves and are willing to help out. Except do not ask for gold still.

You should understand the three basic roles your character can play (4 sort of)
TANK: The role of a tank is to keep the enemy's focus on them and to not die. At present, pay little attention to damage and much attention to threat (tho the next expansion will cange that as i understand). Tanks need to not just absorb hits but to avoid them as well (through dodge and parry statsl). Every tanks class has a different priority for stats, so do some research. If the group wipes (ie all die) someone will blame the tank.
HEALS: Healers keep the entire group alive while paying special attention to the tank. Manage your resources so you can heal an entire fight and not run out of mana. f the group wipes, someone will blame the healer.
DPS (MELEE): Do research and make sure you talents nest serve your weapon type and vice-versa. Melee DPS often fight side by side w/ tanks but need to notinterfere w/ the tanks job, so make sure you get up to speed on positioning in relation to the tank. If the group wipes, someone will blame DPS.
DPS (RANGED): Learn what works best for the class/spec. If your class/spec used lots of DOTS, lead w/ them. You may get critisized for lower dps on short encounters, but you need to build good habits. If you are a nuke, lead with longest cast time spells usually, so you arent not wasting encounter time waiting for a spell to go off. Also understand that you shouldn't lose your lunch in chat because you have to move st times...sometimes tanks need to move a mab. If the group wipes, someone will blame the DPS
