Luck of the Draw Buff

Luck of the Draw Buff

In case you aren't already aware, Luck of the Draw is the name of the buff you get for grouping with random people using Dungeon Finder. It currently provides a 5% buff to damage, healing, and health if you have at least one random player in your group. With patch 4.0.6, we are increasing this buff to 5% damage, healing, and health per random player, up to a maximum of 15%.

In the process of working on this change we actually discovered that the Luck of the Draw buff has not been working in Cataclysm at all, save for a few specific dungeons. This means that the difficulty in almost all normal and Heroic dungeons for those using the Dungeon Finder tool was higher than expected. Still, with that issue corrected in 4.0.6, we feel the bump up to 15% for three or more random players found through the Dungeon Finder is a necessary change.

The intent of Luck of the Draw is to help make up for the lack of coordination, communication, and familiarity that pick up groups suffer relative to organized groups of guild members and friends. Cataclysm dungeons, especially on Heroic mode, are quite challenging and ask for more group organization than the Wrath of the Lich King dungeons did. Therefore, Luck of the Draw became relatively weaker in Cataclysm. I'm painting the picture with unfairly large brush strokes here, but in general, Heroic dungeons are of appropriate difficulty for organized groups, but just brutal on Dungeon Finder groups. Players wonder, and rightly so, why Dungeon Finder supports Cataclysm Heroic dungeons at all when the chance of success is so low.

We think buffing Luck of the Draw is a good way to go about correcting the difficulty differences because it makes things slightly easier on PUGs without depriving the organized groups of a fun challenge. We also think the bonus is modest enough that it won't encourage organized groups to split up and just PUG instead - - the success rate for PUGs relative to organized groups is just that far behind. We still think you'll have more fun and a greater chance of success running dungeons with friends, but when that isn’t possible, we hope this change will make Dungeon Finder a more pleasant experience. Also remember that patch 4.0.6 is adjusting the difficulty of some bosses that are particularly unforgiving, such as Ozruk in Heroic Stonecore, though to be fair, we are buffing some underperforming encounters as well. In addition, we are offering larger Justice Point rewards for players who just prefer the faster pace and greater success rate of normal dungeons, and by the time 4.1 comes out everyone will have access to more powerful gear, making the older content even easier. But then there'll be new challenges to face!

We'd like to thank everyone who has provided us with feedback. We do listen, even if we don't immediately deploy every design change suggested by the player community. Our intent is to make the game fun for a wide variety of players, which can be quite a challenge when you have a community this large and this varied. We hope you continue to enjoy the game, and look forward to sharing more changes (and a few surprises) in the months ahead.

I can see the need to nurf the content for Dungeon Finder Pugs in the beginning, but the gear awarded should be slightly inferior as well. This way there will be a reason to run the instances as it was intended and in guild groups.

The unintended effect of this buff is people are able to run PUGS before they are able to run the instance with guild groups. So in my guild, most burned themselves out on running them before we were able to do it as a group. There is a lot of pressure on people (put there by themselves) to grind for gear so they do it over and over in the DF...)

Honestly, I am not sure if this buff is even needed nowadays. Since Blizzard has turned the Dungeon Finder into an easy grind for Valor Points it is mostly filled with over geared toons. I am not sure I need a 15% boost when tanking a group with 3 toons all doing over 40K dps. That is fairly typical in the runs I have done lately.

Don't you mean the Dungeon finder tool was harder then expected and not higher?

I for one do not like the idea that blizz has been promoting guild involvement since Cata came out, and then leaves guilds out with this luck of the draw buff.

its a nice change for those of us who are part of the more casual guilds. we'll still group 2 or 3 guys together to do pugs. but we rarely do more than a couple serious raids a week.

thank you WoW Dev peoples

You wow dev team guys should do a graph showing # of canceled accounts per day vs. average LFD queue times per day, spanning the time period since the release of cata. Have a design team meeting about the graph, then post the meeting minutes here in the form of a ghostcrawl blog.

no one used it in wrath they just spammed the lich king douegons but still this would help if it is the healer that gets the 15% buff but other than that people are just going to spam halls and grim batol and lost city, it was me i would buff healers

As a tank/healer, I didn't find that heroics were all THAT difficult before the patch, even Throne of the Tides, which everyone seemed to think was notoriously evil. The only problem I ever had was with under-performing DPS, and I have to say that situation still hasn't changed. I still see dps pulling 7k with 15% damage buff.

I thought it was actually really nice that everything wasn't a complete faceroll, and even over-geared groups can still wipe if they're not attentive. Liked the dungeons before, like them now.

Scrubs will QQ til the cows come home, no matter what you do. You will never be able to make content easy enough that the masses can do it without whining, while at the same time challenging enough that people with, as one person put it, "eyes in their sockets", won't breeze through it by rubbing their keyboards briskly across their rumps.

Smidgit, you mean as in D&D where a character could get killed and you had to re-roll? I loved LK, the raids were challenging but the instances became too easy. BC was fun! Vanilla hooked me on WOW! The art in this game is beautiful, and creative. Things to not need to be a certain style to be good.
What ever happened to appreciating more than one thing or game? If we love gaming we all play more than one game. So why run one down and then say, "see you" on the other game. It is hard to understand why everyone is saying WOW is so easy, when it has been fine. It is do-able and well planned. In beta I did not find Telara more difficult than Azeroth.
We are all free we can play and enjoy more than one game with out being hyper critical and unkind.
There are so many wonderful things in WOW. Blizzard makes great games, and while I do have my gripes from time to time, and there are a couple things that really make me vibrate, this has been a great 6 years.
Really looking forward to Diablo and the new game Blizzard is working on.
People just don't do only one thing or play only one game. Life is good and freedom is wonderful!

since for some reason I can't edit I'd like to add a little bit here, okay people learn all the time, and I've dealt with many groups where everyone was new the dungeon except for me and I was totally able to hold their hand and give nice long and descriptive explanations fight by fight and we were able to pull through just fine, my hand goes out to those who can grasp this knowledge... what really urks me are the people who don't listen, and end up causing a wipe and instead of being chill and understanding their mistake they either have no idea what killed them, point the finger, and/or leave... those are the people that never took the chance to learn the so important knowledge I had to give. I wag my finger to those people.

Well the changes in 4.0.6 are pretty decent. With my tanking gear I walk in with 191k health with buffs, at first I was like "I swear I'm not stacking stam!", and now mostly I just carry to team through the dungeon, except in grim batol, had a few trouble people who could dodge the invocation of flame very well X.X, I saw the mage blink into an invocation and die, and after a second attempt the mage was running from it but the healer stood there and got brushed by it... the thing I disliked the most was after pointing out people's mistakes and everything and told them to get their eyes in their sockets, the mage left, was replaced by a priest we just skipped Dragha after an attempt cause the healer finished casting first before dying to the ele, and instead of say "my, bad", he said "wtf". and all that tells me is that he had no idea what killed him. Although we ended up skipping him and successfully downed Erudax, blizzard i suggest making The invocation a lil bigger cause I guess people have a hard time seeing it. Now I know the community might bash me right now cause they think I'm some Hardcore player, but the truth is I'm not... guys, instead of trying to make blizzard make things easier try to up your game a bit, isn't that the whole behind playing the game? and seriously this isn't super hard, theres people in my guild that have a life and they're in our main raid group and we've downed 9/12 normal raid bosses okay, and it's all about just paying attention, and voicing your mistakes so others can know; pitch in, give your two cents and you'll eventually think Heroics are a cakewalk like I do

I think most of the people who play wow are normal players , not elitist. Kihra says 10% are elitist am I right? Well if I am then thats not alot of the popualtion considering the last time I checked it was 11 million .
but just incase 10% is low we will say 20% ... Still makes 80% of 11 million + players NOT elitist. The normal players out number the elite , why should blizzerd cater to 10% of the subscribers? Can wow servive to lose even 30% of that 80% becase they dont have fun playing because it seems they cant move up in the game?

I have a better idea...why not just make a realmof stupidly hard content and move the 1% of players that think the content is too easy there and leave the game to the rest of us that dont like smashing our heads against content that requires millitary training to overcome. Whn you join a pug, you are joining a group that can be anyone from hardcore raiders to noobies that just hit 85 and everything in between. The hardcore for some bizzare reason assume everyone playing this game is either hardcore like them or a total noob...what about the rest of us, sometimes its just this particular instance is new to us or a misclick or even a simple mistake, i know the hardcore dont make mistakes...(or simply they do and dont admit it), but you guys either need to chill out and explain (GASP!!) the fight for the "less hardcore" in the group, if you wipe in a guild raid do you ragequit (if you do then stop playing, you clearly need to get a life) no you sit down discuss the fight/mistakes made then get back into it. if you took that iea to PUGS the game would be a better place. if you are one of those people that kicks guys out at the last boss to get your mate in, then imagine if you were the one that qued for 45 mins to get in did the whole instance taking a few hours and then got replaced for no reason, bet you would be pissed too.
just show a little human decency and consideration and you might be surprised that the world is not full of noobs!!

@Draenicus I agree, it would be great to see a hardcore server where if you died, thats it, end game, and a server for players that like to think when they playand have a challenge, and then the dummy servers for dopes that insist everything should be ez and believe they should have cool gear too just like the people who actually took the time to get better at the game and learn how 2 play, that way you , me and mostly everyone else would be happy. As for pugs, so far i have had more good groups than bad and even the bad ones can be good for a laugh.

@Draenicus: Yeah, there's a bit of a barrier to overcome with new instances. The first few times you do it you're a noob still learning the battles, strategies, etc. During this time a lot of players new to the instance have to suffer from a-hole "dungeon divas" who throw hissy fits at anyone who isn't up to their (perceived) level of expertise. No, I don't do 1,000,000 dps. No, I don't have tier-50 armor. And I have run this instance far less than the 300 times required to be able to do it in my sleep.
I totally agree, the dungeon divas need to get off their high horses and show some simple decency. Educate, don't berate and kick. That would make instances a whole lot more fun for everyone.

Attitudes like the following ruin the game for everyone, if you meet a noob give him some pointers, if he is too proud to listen then kick, dont just shout YOU SUCK and initiate vote, noone wipes on purpose, usually, and everyone has been a noob once
"Sigmet
Blizz dont nerf the insances just buff the "kick player from group button" so that the ignorant noobs can get kicked when they cause a group to lose"

I played wow from the beginning and stopped when lich king came out. Returned when cata was released. It took me a week to get to 60 lvling totally through dungeon pug runs on my hord toon and a week to do the same on an alliance but through all questing with nearlly no dungeons. The game allready is far to easy. Maybe instead of making the bits ive been hanging to get to, easier, Blizz should think about providing a noob server or servers where playing is 20% easier but not allow the transfer of toons from this server to another at all ever, once you have played on it, but, allow people from over servers who are having a hard time to transfer to it for free. That way we all are kept happy.

@Smidgit: Don't judge how hard the game is based on how quickly you get to lvl 60. Getting to lvl 60 is easier now because you have to get another 25 much longer levels on top of that.

Our intent is to make the game fun for a wide variety of players, which can be quite a challenge when you have a community this large and this varied.

If you want to make the game more "fun" get rid of the cookie cutter specs and give us out hybrids back.ANY toon can replace another toon of same type simply because they HAVE to spec the same.Dumbest idea you guys ever came up with was taking the FUN out of the game by removing our ability to CREATE a character WE the PLAYERS could have FUN with.prot pallies..same moves..same specs...same gear...same same same..whats fun in that.same with the other classes...there is VERY little difference in ANY same spec classes..
