Cenarion Hatchling Raises More Than $1.9 Million for Japan Earthquake Relief

Cenarion Hatchling Raises More Than $1.9 Million for Japan Earthquake Relief

Thanks to the overwhelming generosity of World of Warcraft players around the world who purchased the Cenarion Hatchling pet, we’ve raised a total of more than $1.9 million USD to support the ongoing earthquake and tsunami relief efforts in Japan. In May, we announced that for every Cenarion Hatchling purchased by July 31, 2011, 100% of the $10 USD adoption fee would be going to assist victims of this disaster -- and the community responded by opening up their hearts and wallets wide. Thanks again for your support and for helping to make an impact on the lives of those affected by these events.

Now to start a relief for those in the United States that need help ...

Like, buy a pet or mount, and receive 15 days gametime or 10,000 gold.

@Dakmal: Actually, it was ONLY the cenarion hatchling that was donated to charity, not the mounts.....

Amazing! :D

I wouldn't normally have bought a pet, but since the proceeds were going to the relief effort, I jumped at the chance to help. Yeah, I could have donated via established charities, such as Red Cross, but this was a way to say, "Yes, I helped."

@Hruontada: so when you help someone you want or expect to be acknowledged? Isn't that kind of self serving? I mean, you should want to help because it is the right thing to do, not because you want a pat on the back.

@Raygun: I know if my life was in shambles I wouldn't care where the money came from. If someone wanted to brag about/let people know he/she donated...fine by me. I don't understand why there is such a stigma about being polite when you are giving your hard earned money to someone that needs it.

Look at the cute Hippogryph with his big goofy beak!

Oh wait, they don't have that beak anymore. WTH, Blizz? Give us the old beak back. The new one doesn't look appropriate, it looks retarded.

@Kitiane: This is the kind of attitude that hurts raising money for people.

Once again, from someone who lost a child to cancer in the past year, raising money and helping those who need it is not a beauty contest.

Who in the world are you to think raising money for anyone is something to be impressed or bragged about. It is about helping people and showing the charitable illiterate "here is a proven way to help someone in need".

Sorry, but I still see this horrible attitude when I try to help others who are fighting to save their child's life but make the most of the life they have left. I have NEVER seen it come from anyone who actually helps others. Just those who stand on the sideline 'judging' everyone else.

And this is why Blizzard is brilliant.

Kind of wished I'd donate, though, but oh well.

I bought the pet for both my wife's account and my own account. I've gotta say, this has to be the most brilliant fundraising technique I have ever seen in my life. Heck, the pet model they used was already in the game (as a rare trading card pet), so they didn't even need to do any additional development work.

I wanted to help the people in Japan, but I wasn't sure how. This gave me an easy (and fun) method to do that.

For 2010 Marsha J. Evans, President and CEO of the American Red Cross...for her salary for the year ending in 2009 was $651,957 plus expenses. Enjoys 6 weeks - fully paid holidays including all related expenses during the holiday trip for her and her husband and kids. including 100% fully paid health & dental plan for her and her family, for life. This means out of every dollar they bring in, about $0.39 goes to related charity causes.

@Loosey: Blizz could have made over $1million dollars if they released this as a normal pet you buy from the blizz store. However they donated 100% to the earthquake and tsunami relief. So thank you very much blizz for your generosity, and thanks to us for buying the pets too =)
