The Deathwing Raid: Interview with Scott Mercer

The Deathwing Raid: Interview with Scott Mercer

In World of Warcraft content patch 4.3, players will make their ultimate stand against Deathwing the Destroyer. Almost a year has passed since the corrupted Dragon Aspect burst forth from the Maelstorm to bring the Cataclysm down upon the mortal races. Now the determined survivors from the Horde and Alliance have rallied to unleash vengeance of their own.

To prepare for this earth-shattering battle, the Blizzard Insider recently discussed the upcoming Dragon Soul raid with Scott Mercer, lead encounter designer from the World of Warcraft team. Read on for all the epic details.

*** CAUTION: THIS INTERVIEW CONTAINS SPOILER INFORMATION ON THE CATACLYSM STORY AND THE FINAL BATTLE AGAINST DEATHWING. ***

Blizzard Insider: Before we dive into the details, can you tell us about Deathwing’s character arc to date?

Scott Mercer: Deathwing has changed the face of Azeroth probably more than any other villain in Warcraft’s history. He tore the Barrens in half. He caused tidal waves that transformed both continents. He even burned his claw marks into Stormwind Keep, leaving his personal signature on the Alliance capital. In many ways Deathwing embodies the Cataclysm itself, not just as the direct cause of it, but also as the thematic center of the expansion. His violent transformation from Earth-Warder to Destroyer ultimately led to all these changes across Azeroth, so in a very direct way, his character arc represents the force that set the entire expansion into motion.

That said, we’ve been building towards a showdown with Deathwing for some time. Players have been wrestling with his Twilight's Hammer minions since before Cataclysm, and we’ve already seen Deathwing defeat Alexstrasza in single combat. The powers that be in Azeroth know Deathwing presents a mortal threat, so in the wake of all the chaos and destruction, forces are finally rallying to oppose him. That’s how patch 4.3 begins, with the major players of Azeroth gathering to decide how they are going to tackle this seemingly unstoppable monster.

Insider: Can you tell us about the new 5-player dungeons that lead into the Deathwing raid?

Scott Mercer: The short version is that the players are sent on a series of quests to recover the Dragon Soul artifact so Thrall and the other dragonflights will have the firepower they need to confront Deathwing. The new 5-player dungeons involve the Caverns of Time and require the players to go forward in time to witness a future where Deathwing has destroyed the world. Then, from that bleak future, they must go back in time to the War of the Ancients to recover the Dragon Soul and bring it back to the present. We’ve discussed a lot more details on the new 5-player dungeons in other interviews. They're going to lead in directly to the patch 4.3 raid instance, which is called Dragon Soul. When the raid begins, the players have recovered the Dragon Soul artifact and arrive at Wyrmrest Temple to find it under siege by Deathwing’s forces.

Insider: Aside from a battle with Deathwing, what other encounters do you have planned for the Dragon Soul raid?

Scott Mercer: When players first arrive at Wyrmrest, they have to fight off a variety of Deathwing’s minions who are laying siege to the temple. There’s Morchok, a stone giant who is pounding the base of Wyrmrest, and Warlord Zon’ozz and Yor’sajh the Unsleeping, two servants of the Old Gods in league with Deathwing who are summoning more minions to sack the gates.

In addition to lifting the siege around Wyrmrest, the players also have to return to the Eye of Eternity to get the Focusing Iris so the Dragon Aspects can refocus their power into the Dragon Soul. We have some new gameplay elements in mind for these raids, including a mechanic where players are granted the ability to dodge a deadly attack from a twilight dragon by phasing away.

Insider: What details can you tell us about the Deathwing raid? How does it differ from other raids?

Scott Mercer: Dragon Soul is the most story-driven raid we’ve ever created. We’re even building several cut scenes to transition between the last three stages of the final encounter with Deathwing.

The first stage occurs as players are flying on an airship, chasing down Deathwing while his Twilight's Hammer drake riders are swooping in to harry the pursuit. In the second stage, players paratroop commando-style onto Deathwing’s back and start ripping up his armor, trying to pry a hole big enough to give Thrall a clean shot with the Dragon Soul. During this phase, players are actually riding on Deathwing as he’s swooping around and trying to knock the players off with barrel rolls and such.  Players will have to hang on at key points in the fight to avoid falling while also tangling with all kinds of monstrosities that are rising out of Deathwing’s corrupted magma blood. Once the players get enough of Deathwing’s armor off, Thrall blasts Deathwing with the Dragon Soul and sends him crash-landing into the Maelstrom.

Insider: Very cool! And the final stage?

Scott Mercer: Well, the interesting thing about Deathwing’s armor is that it wasn’t really built to keep things out--he doesn’t have to worry about weapons like swords and arrows. Instead it was built to keep things in. His body is this incredibly volatile mixture of corruptive energy and burning magma, so without his armor to hold it all together, he starts to lose it and come apart in all kinds of crazy ways. The final stage of the raid begins when Deathwing’s deformed body rises out of the Maelstrom to face off against the players in the final showdown. I won’t go into too much detail about this final stage, but I will say that it’s going to be unbelievably epic. Even in his weakened state, Deathwing still presents a major threat, and bringing him down will require the combined efforts of the players, Thrall, and even the other Dragon Aspects.

Insider: What difficulties did you encounter while designing the Deathwing battle?

Scott Mercer: It took a lot of new technologies to set up the fight on Deathwing’s back. The artists in particular focused on selling the fantasy that you’re grappling with a giant dragon midflight. We’ve never done anything quite like that before. Overall, setting the right scope for an encounter like Deathwing required a lot of development disciplines working together--artists, coders, encounter designers, level designers, and animators. We built corrupted Deathwing as a giant set piece with a lot of moving parts--probably our most complicated character model to date--but we felt it was necessary to convey the epic scale and do justice to the final boss of Cataclysm.

Insider: Let’s talk loot. What rewards await players who are strong enough to tackle Deathwing the Destroyer?

Scott Mercer: There will be a new tier of armor sets, of course. We’re also adding a new legendary weapon--a pair of daggers for rogues--with a new quest chain involved in obtaining them. The artists and animators are working on a new mount, a drake from the red dragonflight that borrows many visual elements from the Alexstrasza character model. Players can get one version of the new mount as the reward for the meta achievement for completing all other Dragon Soul achievements. There will also be a second, rarer version of the mount, that’s obtainable as a single, guaranteed drop off Heroic corrupted Deathwing.

Insider: Thanks for your time. Is there anything else you’d like to share before you go?

Scott Mercer: Sure, there’s a lot going into the next content update besides just the Dragon Soul raid--Transmogrification, Void Storage, the new Darkmoon Faire, and more. The patch should have something for everyone.

@Mavros: the only (and i mean only) way to solve this problem is to change the legendaries from weapons to universal pieces like necks, backs, rings, trinkets.

i definately don't see Blizzard doing that.

As we can see from patch 4.3 blizzard isn't necessarily concerned with this either... making a pair of daggers for not just rogues, but only 2 of 3 rogue specs.

maybe we will get a tanking legendary in time, maybe it will have to be 3 of them over 3 patches (lord knows healers and dps will gripe about that, but dks need 2handers, druids need staves, and pallys/warriors need 1h/shield.)

i'm not even concerned if i don't ever get a legendary for my class/spec because in all honesty, the fights were designed so we could do them without legendaries in the first place.

@Mavros: Blizzard isn't going to make a Legendary for a class specific toon. As you can see in the past they make them for classes as a whole and their has never been a "tanking" weapon. Although the Shadowmourne has been used as a Death Knight tanking weapon, it wasn't a true tank weapon. Now it would be nice if Blizzard strayed from the traditional style of Legendary weapons and made one that could be reforged in a way that would suit your class and spec but impossible to accomplish on your own. Also it being helpful to a raid or party carrying along with it an uberbuff and a usable GCD.

Something I want to mention, it is always said when ever a Time event happens where we must go back, and even in books, that we do nothing at all to mess with the past. Why are we going back and taking the dragon soul from the past? Does that not mess up events? Or is this just breaking more lore boundaries so you can make content <_<.

@Nystandria: No, I really just want to understand this, since they have always been against going into the past and changing anything, I guess we might be able to find out that a repeated event happened where we did this or they could make one up, but still goes against the norm of how things are done.

@Jackjagalos: so far... nothign has been changed when we have gone into the past, and when knaak has had characters go into the past before we have seen repurcussions (i.e. krasus reversed the extinction of the blue flight) but our journeys through CoT have been to prevent change (even when it meant letting Arthas kill thousands).

this looks to be the first time we will be actively changing the past, and who knows, maybe it will have notable effects on the raid, maybe it will be returned to the proper time place after we kill Deathwing...

i really don't think Nozdormu would let us do something that would change the past so radically as to have a negative outcome... unless...

@Jackjagalos: Or, the attempt to steal the dragon soul could fail, and be the reason he ends up with it in the first place...

Usually when they do take us back, like caverns, its just to show us how an event played out that we didnt get to see.

Let's convince Nozdormu to take us back in time, to kill all the Old Gods, and all problems will be solved! Sargeras would still be building sandcastles and picking flowers so there'll be no Legion; there will be nobody to corrupt Ner'zhul so no Frostmourne to tempt the palladin Arthas and make him Turn Evil for real; and Neltharion won't be Deathwing~ ...and yeah, WoW would be pretty boring if everything was so peaceful. :|

I have to say, this whole end-piece sounds really, really amazing. But: the Molten Front sounded amazing when it was talked up conceptually as well - and it turned out to be a month-long grind-fest of repetitive, boring pain. Doing the Molten Front dailies on two characters was enough to make me take a break from WoW - what a horrible implementation of such an amazing concept. And so, I will wait: while Deathwing sounds incredibly cool, I will withhold my excitement until we know if it actually delivers... or if it turns out to be another Molten Front.

really? a SECOND set of legendaries ONLY for rogues (Remember glaives? and warriors; they can use daggers too!) what a rip off.
at least they didnt mention anything about a 'gated' instance with deathwing. this is good.

1handed axe agility would be better. It could then be used by enhancement shamans who have never had a good weapon, and maybe even hunters.

I really think for the next legendary they should somehow make the Dragon Soul a legendary. Perhaps make it a trinket usable for all classes, the use unleashes the highest stat + a unique bonus for the class. That would be something much better and would hold a higher grip on the PvE content of the patch. So far i've heard it's going to be a Rogue dagger which seems ridiculous, stupid and poorly thought about. Obviously a feral druid or enhance shaman needs a legendary still, definitely not a rogue. Either way I still think the Dragon soul would be badass to have.

@Scarhoof: The thing is, though, that the Warglaives were pretty much limited to Combat rogues, given the fact that the mainhand was slow and that they were both swords. These legendaries will be made to suit all rogue specs without any real DPS loss.

And no, there's no bias here.

Why does everyone seam to think this patch is coming out in like two weeks time? We knew about firelands months before it dropped. They cant release the 4.3 now as it would just end the PVP season short and the deathwing Raid isnt even on the PTR yet. I doubt we will see 4.3 drop until december.

@Velthos: with the new raid finder people will be able to see the entire raid, obviously too easy for the common raider, but at least players don't have to wait for the next patch/expantion to see current content.

But I hope the epicness of the last fight doesn't differ too much from normal/heroic dificulties

I understand that DWing has arrived sooner than most have anticipated, but most fail to mention in the forums that this xpack was basically a half xpack to begin with. Vanilla was 1-60 and there was tons of end-game content, BC was 61-70 with enough tough content to last a bit, and WotLK was 71-80 with plenty of end-game content as well. With Cata, it is only 81-85, so yes, it has all max lvl toons standing in SW or Org. bouncing around and standing on fountains, just simply not enough content. With that said, DWing is not coming too early, cuz they have plans to release more. I'm pretty sure we will see another xpack which will have lvl 86-90 cap soon. Once that comes to pass, the lvl 81-90 experience will be a 2yr process, similar to the xpacks of the past.

@Gregnight: The amount of levels never dictated how much content there was going to be if you actually read blue post and were not making this up on the spot like other people have been. They said specificly that it would have no impact on any thing, it would still feel like a 10 level grind experience which it did, leveling has nothing to do with the amount of content, levels are just a number. They had plans for more content but sacked it because they want to be done with this expansion.

If this was a planned half expansion we would have only paid 20$ for this, not a full price.

@Gregnight: You have to remember that Blizzard released Cata with a completely revamped Azeroth. The amount of work that it took to do that was so phenomenal that i'm glad we got the amount of end game we did.

That said, Blizz has (semi)assumed that people would be doing the new 1-60 as content as well as end game, so i can agree that end game content was a bit lacking.

People hopping around in SW/ORG/Dal is not a direct result of cata... can you remember the last time you had left Dal to do anything other than farm once the Dungeon finder had been implemented?

Dungeon finder is a great tool that lets people find eachother, but it comes with a few big downfalls (the oft terrible experiences of either troll, new, or bad players can make even normal dungeons go awry, and the need to leave town has significantly decreased).
Now don't get me wrong, the dungeon finder can be a great thing, but it is so ingrained right now in wow that it will never go away. So 1 thing that Blizz has to focus on is giving even more and better content once you have found that group/raid and are doing your thing, which they seem to be doing quite a bit in 4.3 (these new 5 mans, the epic raid encounters, new level of raids, Darkmoon Faire for low and high levels, etc)
