Guardian Cub Tradable Pet Now Available

Guardian Cub Tradable Pet Now Available

Now available in the Pet Store: the new and titanically cute Guardian Cub companion. Orphaned by its titan creators, the fledgling Guardian Cub has taken wing to look for a happy home. Adopt one today and it will stay by your side through thick and thin, following your character just about anywhere your adventures take you—even into the skies of Azeroth.

The Guardian Cub is the Pet Store's first tradable pet, meaning it can be swapped between characters in-game or given as a gift to guildmates, friends, family, or that special someone (after a cooldown period -- see below). Due to his finicky nature, each Guardian Cub will only give its allegiance to one owner, meaning it’s a one-time-use pet that permanently binds to a single character. Be sure to choose a master wisely.

The Guardian Cub is available now in the Pet Store. Check out the mini-FAQ below for more information on how this flying friend differs from other Pet Store companions.

---

Q: How does the Guardian Cub pet work? How is it different from other Pet Store pets?
Unlike the other Pet Store companions, the Guardian Cub is a tradable, one-time-use pet that permanently binds to a single character upon use. When you purchase the Guardian Cub from the online store, the character you designate will receive a bind-on-use item in his or her in-game mailbox, which can then be added to the character’s inventory. You can either use the item yourself to permanently add the pet to your character's collection (consuming the item in the process), or -- after an initial 24-hour cooldown period -- you can trade the item to another player so he or she can add it to one of their character's collections. Note that once the pet has been added to a character's Companions list, it can no longer be traded, so make sure you're giving the cub a happy home.

Q: Will I be able to carry more than one Guardian Cub at a time?
While a character can only have one Guardian Cub in his or her Companions list, you can have as many in your inventory as you like. Please note that Guardian Cub items do not stack, so each one will take up a bag or bank slot.

Q: How much will the Guardian Cub cost in the Pet Store?
The Guardian Cub will be priced the same as the other Pet Store pets ($10 USD). All sales of the Guardian Cub are final -- no refunds will be given once a purchase is made.

Q: Why did you decide to make the Guardian Cub tradable?
Since the introduction of the Pet Store, many players have been asking for ways to get the companions we offer there without having to spend real-world cash. By making the Guardian Cub tradable (much like the BoE mounts from the World of Warcraft Trading Card Game), players interested in the new pet will have fun, alternative in-game ways to get one. In addition to trading the pet, players can give the Guardian Cub as a gift to another character for a special occasion; guild leaders can use them to reward members for a job well done; and so on. We also hope this change will help reduce the number of incidents of scamming via trading for invalid pet codes.

Q: Could I put the Guardian Cub up on the auction house to try to make some gold if I wanted to?
While our goal is to offer players alternative ways to add a Pet Store pet to their collection, we’re ok with it if some players choose to use the Guardian Cub as a safe and secure way to try to acquire a little extra in-game gold without turning to third-party gold-selling services. However, please keep in mind that there's never any guarantee that someone will purchase what you put up for sale in the auction house, or how much they'll pay for it. Also, it’s important to note that we take a firm stance against buying gold from outside sources because in most cases, the gold these companies offer has been stolen from compromised accounts. (You can read more about our stance here, or you can read our recent blog post on teh subject here.) While some players might be able to acquire some extra gold by putting the Guardian Cub in the auction house, that’s preferable to players contributing to the gold-selling “black market” and account theft.

Q: Are you changing the other available Pet Store pets (e.g. Lil' Ragnaros, the Pandaren Monk) to work this way?
No, the other available Pet Store pets will continue to work as they always have.

Q: What about future Pet Store pets?
It's too early to say how we'll handle future Pet Store pets. We made this change in response to feedback from players looking for alternate ways to get the Pet Store pets, and we're always looking into other opportunities for improvement. We're interested in hearing what players think of the Guardian Cub, and we hope you'll have fun with this new flying friend.

Wish they'd make the other petstore pets BoE. It would instantly address the petstore scam where people get suckered into trading gold for a petstore loot code which gets revoked when the transaction is cancelled. The GMs will cite section B(vii) of the terms of use for why they won't help you get some justice out of being screwed. It's a catch-all clause which basically says "it's against our policy for you to participate in anything that gets you screwed over, and since it's against our policy, we don't have to help you". Turning the loot codes into an in-game BoE item which turns into a physical account-bound pet would solve that and increase sales the same way the guardian cub sold so well for people looking to make gold by providing pets to others who don't want to spend real money.

Ohh, okay. Blizz must be using this to practice for their real life auction house; seeing if people will spend real money for trade able items. Well hopefully it works for them with D3.

I think the pet is very cute and I would buy it if it was BOA. I have a lot of toons I actually play, so I'd want it for all of them. I don't want to pay $10 a pet. I wouldn't sell it for gold either. Spending real life money for gold seems silly. I mean, it seems silly to buy a pet for real life money as it is, but when it's $10 for a single pet... that's much worse. I have yet to buy a pet with real cash, but I do like this one, I just don't want to buy it for only one toon. Blizz should definitely make it an option to buy it tradeable or BOA. (And not for more money if BOA - since $10 is the price for all the other BOA pets.)

Although I do like the fact that you can buy them for friends. Why wouldn't you still give an option (perhaps $15-$20) to buy the pet for BOA so people that have always bought the pets from the store and like to have them on all of their toons still can. I think some choices on the buying would be nice.

This little guy is adorable...but I have to agree with those who don't like having to purchase it for each toon. I've too many alts for that. I do like the idea of purchasing it for a friend...but I could do that with the previous pets. No, I can't sell it on the AH...but there are other pets that I can sell there. Plunking down real-life cash for something that can be sold in the AH seems 'off'. Though I see the logic of making it more widely available to counter the illicit market, I'm thinking I will pass on this one.

I would not buy it specifically because it is BOE vs BOA. Same with my husband. Mostly because we are deleting and adding new characters, I wouldn't want to end up deleting the ONLY character that has this pet and have to buy a new one for a new character. BOA is much better for paying cash for.

Honestly, I won't buy this pet specifically because its a one time use non-soulbound. The reason I buy pets on the store, and I have bought quite a few pets and mounts, is because I want the pet, so I like having them on all my characters. Its not worth it to me to pay $10 for only one character to get it, for one pet that is too expensive to me, and I honestly do strongly prefer that all my characters get the pet.

I think all (or at least most) of you are missing the point here. Yes its $10 for a pet that can be used buy the customer, given to a friend/loved one, or even sold on the AH. How does this make Blizzard gold farmers? Cause they give you a way to get a pet and sell it? Is it any different then farming for the rare ones in game or finding a world BoE drop? Blizzard is doing this so people can sell them and make a little more gold and NOT go and buy gold that has been stolen. I've had my account hacked before and I see this as way for Blizzard to one up them. I will agree that it sucks that its not for all of your toons, but that is something I can easily look over since I only care about collecting stuff on my main. Plus if thats the only bad thing you people can point out then you might wanna rethink your arguement on this.

So we're either allowed to sell gold for cash in trade now, or Blizzard has adopted a "do as we say, not as we do" policy.

I wonder which one it is...

Regardless of how Blizz is selling this (BoE vs BoA), it will not have any impact on outside gold vendors. The idea here, is that their gold is stolen, therefore making it free to obtain, and 100% profit for them to sell. The pet is not necessarily worth 10k on every server, therefore making the conversion from Blizz's pet (gold) selling obsolete. All the thieves have to do is make their deal better than Blizz - the only outcome I see from this, unfortunately, is that Blizz will have to sell their own gold, as they are the only other people that can create gold from nothing.
Also, @Nattalya - I agree, as trade channel often starts to look like I'm playing d2 again.

Easy way to seriously foil gold spamming in trade...Minimum level to broadcast Lvl 10.....how hard would this be to implement? Even lvl 5 would stop the respawning of the lvl 1's

well, although it may sound nice, I feel like I'm being ripped-off... I'm into collecting companions with as much of my characters as possible (and I've got loads of them), so I don't think it's fair to sell a one-time-use pet for 10USD; it's far too expensive! Besides, it seems like Blizzard is giving away to exchanging real money for gold... I fear that eventually we'll be able to buy it from Blizzard store...

I wont buy him. I get a pet I want it on all my tunes not just one and I dont think buying one for $10 is such a great deal. My other pet store pets are on all my tunes so I in effect get as many of that pet as I have toons compared to just one of these for the same cost $10 not a fair price.
I will continue to buy pets/mounts available that apply to all my toons but I want no part of this pet or any future ones like him.

He is adorable and I do collect pets but I also play 13 (and counting) characters. Coughing up $10 per character puts him out of my reach budget wise. Maybe my grandkids will each send me one for Christmas!

I received the Guardian Cub as an in-game gift from my partner and it is really a well done companion in terms of animations and behavior. While cooking up a storm for the Pilgrim's Bounty, I had my cub with me and the animations made him look like he was begging for food at the table!

Despite what Blizz puts up for sale or gives away, there not making
you buy anything.
You don.t have to pay blizz,s price anything but $14.99 per month.
So if you don,t like their price or like me can,t afford things like this,
then do what you have to do in the REAL suck it and walk on.
I like some think that a pet or mount that you receive in game
like for completing a quest, or for an achievement or guild achievement
is good enough. Something you get by earning it brings more pleasure
than something bought.

I picked this up when I joined some friends on a different server. Sold for 6k, which will save me a ton of time farming gold at low levels for bags, bank space, riding training, etc.... Well worth the 10 bucks IMHO.
Granted I would not have done it on my main server as I can just do dailies for gold.

I think I'm going to buy this. Seems like a pretty good way to combat the gold farmers. Also, cost of increased flying speed feels like a ripoff to me. I'll sell it cheap, 5k, so it most all goes to flying and I won't feel like I've ruined the challenge of making money. Also, 10$ really isn't that much...

@Faramorn: well you are paying $14.99 per month to play WOW so you are equating that pet to playtime for 2/3 of a month. Now does it seem so cheap?
