Battle.net Mobile Authenticator – Java Version Support Update

Battle.net Mobile Authenticator – Java Version Support Update

In the weeks ahead, we will be discontinuing the Java-based (J2ME) versions of the Battle.net Mobile Authenticator currently available for download at http://mobile.blizzard.com. This includes versions of the Battle.net Mobile Authenticator for mobile devices like the Motorola RAZR, Nokia's Series 40, and other "non-smartphones."

The iPhone®, Android™, and Windows® Phone 7 versions of the Battle.net Mobile Authenticator are not affected by this, and will continue to be supported and available at https://us.battle.net/account/support/mobile-auth-download.html.

Any Battle.net Mobile Authenticators previously downloaded from http://mobile.blizzard.com will still continue to function, as will the version available through BlackBerry® AppWorld™. However, we will not be providing further updates after December 13, 2011, and that will also be the last day these versions will be available for download from http://mobile.blizzard.com. The downloadable ringtones and wallpapers available at this site will also be discontinued, but we’re looking into ways to offer them as free downloads from our community websites in the future.

For more information on the Battle.net Mobile Authenticator, please refer to the FAQ.

Hey Blizz,

I think you folks are doing an outstanding job trying to decipher what your customers wants and needs are, and you provide a good business model in general. You have a good variety of security devices available, and in my opinion, go way beyond the call of duty.

However, when you discontinue a device many may be using for security of their account, a simple explication as to why you discontinue would probably satisfy the needs of those who now have to find another way to secure their account. For example, “The Ipod Razor droid phone is being discontinued because there is a security exploit being used by the 10 year old Chinese gold farmers of Mexico”. Or a simple “The Ipod Razor droid phone is too obsolete.”

Perfect, lets take away support and make you purchase an new phone or an authenticator. The whole point is to only have to carry around one device.

@Arromard: "This includes versions of the Battle.net Mobile Authenticator for mobile devices like the Motorola RAZR, Nokia's Series 40, and other "non-smartphones."

I personally would assume that it should still work on an iPod Touch. It's the exact same thing as the iPhone (minus the phone and probably some other small features). Not to mention the iPod Touch uses the exact same Mobile Authenticator application as the one on the iPhone. So I think you're safe. Just me speculating though. I have a Motorola Droid.

If I'd wanted an iJunk I would have bought one. I am an apple user, supporter and a bit of a fan, but I do NOT like the iPhone. What happens if my blackberry crashes and I need to do a factory restore?

Also, I have a Torch 9800, which isn't supported on the list on mobile.blizzard.com, but I downloaded it from App-World, so I'm a little confused as to whats going on re: people with new-ish blackberries.

@Catherynna:

RIM had released a new model which supports the Android OS and are also working closely with Microsoft to release several models based on the Windows Mobile OS. You should think about upgrading your phone when your contract is ended.

Get up to date, smart-phones are now a huge part of us and old phones should be discontinued. Even thought I think the blackberry authenticator should still be developed and updated to work with the newest OS. Androids and iOS are taking over! If you don't have a supported smart-phone, then get the authenticator from the blizzard store and case solved. If you can afford a monthly bill from your phone company, you can spend a few dollars to get the authenticator.

Good riddance. I used to have a Nokia phone, and switched my authenticator to it from my iPod touch because I also always had my phone with me. But I won a new Nokia phone from them in a contest (true story) and I couldn't reload the authenticator onto the new phone without buying it again. Just one more reason I switched to iPhone.

Many people had trouble with the 3rd party that developed and offered the java based authenticator (and ringtones and wallpaper). Horrible customer support (none, basically) and no communication with Blizzard. If anything went wrong in the purchase/download process (handled via a series of texts and links that - according to several other posts - are prone to fail) you are basically out of luck and in the dark.

Good riddance.

I use the mobile authenticator for my Droid. I swiched from the regular authenticator, mostly for simplicity. I always have my phone with me.

I think this is going to be great for non-smartphone users. Great to hear.

Okay, just to clear a few things up the article clearly states that:

"The iPhone®, Android™, and Windows® Phone 7 versions of the Battle.net Mobile Authenticator are not affected by this, and will continue to be supported and available at https://us.battle.net/account/support/mobile-auth-download.html."

And to those of you qqing about the fact that you don't have an android, allow me to do the hard work and actually READ the post for you:

"Any Battle.net Mobile Authenticators previously downloaded from http://mobile.blizzard.com will still continue to function, as will the version available through BlackBerry® AppWorld™"

So quit whining, honestly. People need to learn to read, that's why that quest is taking you hours to finish, it's not because Blizzard sucks it's because you can't just follow the arrow on your minimap THE TEXT CLEARLY SAYS TO TALK TO THIS GUY TO GET A RIDE THERE!

That is all.

So I'm just wondering. All of you that are qq about not having the authenticator on your phone anymore; have you ever considered buying the actual authenticator? It's relatively cheap and it does not stop working if you drop your phone in water or it crashes. Just saying, you still have good options.

@Dracona: Honestly, don't blame Blizzard. Blame RIM. Just because you developed the first smart phone, doesn't mean you should fall behind and fail to support current technology like ActiveSync and HTML 5 and Flash. As an IT Admin, we've been pushing all of our Blackberry users to iPhones, Droids, or Win7 phones because maintaining a whole separate server so 13 users in a company of hundreds can get their email is ridiculous. Buy a new phone because you deserve a better one, not because Blizzard decided to stop outsourcing a service to a company that's just as terrible as the dated technology that required it. ^_^

@Atura: Flash mobile is being discontinued for all phones, not just berries. Blackberry is also working on implementing HTML5 on all future phones. I don't see what point you are trying to make other then, "har, har, I like iPhone better!"

Also, not everyone just has the option to run out and buy a new phone because an IT guy has a hard on for Steve Jobs.

@Joltcola: I didn't read anything in there about loving Apple, what he said was
As an IT Admin, we've been pushing all of our Blackberry users to iPhones, Droids, or Win7 phones because maintaining a whole separate server so 13 users in a company of hundreds can get their email is ridiculous.
Essentially, RiM needs to catch up with the new tech and stop programming their OS's like we're still in the 20th century.

Also, It's about time that Adobe dumped their bloated, memory hogging, power guzzling excuse for mobile Flash. And just for the record, and because reading comprehension is hard, I have a Droid. Mobile Flash is just bad.

This is because the technology and reliability is becoming old. HTML 5 is the way everything is going (Adobe dropped flash for phones). Sadly, this sucks gnome bacon for those of us that don't use smart phones, but I understand why.

What, the dollars Blizz got from those of us who still accept that a phone is still a phone isn't good enough? Instead it's gotta be the free ones for the PC's-Turned-Phones and the Cr-Apple-made junk? I really don't get this move, especially after I took the time to explain to my guild that many different "feature phones" were supported.s

I have had the authenticator for my Android(Motorola Atrix 4G) for a long while now and I must say I am thankful blizzard made the software available to these systems. It makes me feel much safer and my account more secure. I have had friends who have been hacked several times and if you have android or windows mobile, I highly reccomend downloading the mobile authenticator for your wow accounts.

Any chances you ever give your Blackberry users some love ?!? If i wanted an Iphone/Android/Windows Phone i'd bought one ... I guess we don't need Authenticator ... Can't even install it on the newest devices running OS7.
