Blizzard Entertainment's Student Art Contest

Blizzard Entertainment's Student Art Contest

Blizzard Entertainment's university relations and World of Warcraft development team are proud to present their first-ever student art contest.

If you’re a current university or college student you could be one of three grand-prize winners to be awarded a package containing a t-shirt, a free year of World of Warcraft, a Blizzard notebook containing an original sketch, and a three-month mentorship with a World of Warcraft artist! Submissions must consist of a 3D modeled and textured set piece, fit for use in World of Warcraft.

Check out the link for more information, official rules, and submission form.

The submission deadline is January 15, 2012. Good luck!

Wooowww, was anyone else other than me confused by the turn in date!? It says right up there the deadline was January 15th. And yet it was really due Jan. 15th at 12:01 AM...which REALLY means January 14th before 12 midnight. o.O I worked my !@#$ off finalizing my entry, got it done just in time (or so I thought) only to be slapped in the face with, "This contest has already ended" when I tried to turn my work in.

Well that'll teach me to wait till the last minute! In my defense, I didn't see this contest till December, and my Game Art Creation class was taking up almost all my time. But oh well, lesson learned.

Ha ha, dudes, I'm an artist! I can't tell time! o.O :D :D :D Ha ha ha!

Anyway, if anyone would like to check out the entry that never was, feel free.

sounds like a cheap !@# trick blizzard start comming up with your own content for once and stop stealing things from everyone else. mists of pandaria is a joke your doing nothing but stealing the character "Po" from kung fu panda i find it funny you would throw this contest out their just to steal ideas from players and its extremly sickening (spits)

@Ashtanar:
Dude, if you are that spiteful toward Blizzard stop supporting them with your $15 a month. I you read the fine print of nearly -every- contest in which you submit your original work to a company (Blizzard run or otherwise,) you will find that the act of submitting it transfers ownership to said company. Blizzard isn't trying to steal your soul, it is a standard legal clause.

And in an effort to help you overcome your ignorance- Pandarians have been in Warcraft lore since the Warcraft III Frozen Throne expansion, released in 2003. 'Po' was from the DreamWorks movie, Kung Fu Panda, which was released in 2008. Unless the developers at Blizzard have secretly achieved time travel, there is -no possible way- they "stole" Po's character.

You can not fathom how tired I am at pointing this fact out to willfully ignorant people. :/

For anyone who has not read the rules I submit this;

"Sponsor Ownership of Entries. You hereby agree that in consideration of your being allowed the chance to enter the Contest and for Sponsor to consider you as a possible winner of this Contest, you hereby agree that all materials that you submit to Blizzard Entertainment, Inc., including, but not limited to, any artwork, computer code, graphic designs, design concepts, as well as any form of ‘original work of authorship’ which you create and submit to Sponsor to enter this Contest, shall become the sole and exclusive property of Sponsor. Note that this assignment of your ownership rights includes any “moral rights” that you may have otherwise had in the submission."

That means once it has be submitted, you no longer own any rights to your work. You will not be compensated should Blizzard be so inclined to use your art work in game. Even if you do not win Blizzard has the right to take your work. Why do you think its only for university students. That way everyone is of 18 years or older and would have legally have signed the terms and agreements.

So, word of warning, be prepared to be ripped off.

Are you people at Blizzard so bias that you feel the need to always make this for US & Canada only. The world is full of artistic people and you always have to be like this.

You do realize that Mexico is also part of North America? And the sad part is that you guys always say it's due to different laws and legislation... ever heard of NAFTA? Yeah we're part of that and it makes commerce, trade and just about every mercantile transaction possible between our 3 countries. Jesus you guys piss me off.

@Sciene: There are a lot of international students withen the US which would have made you eligable. But the reality is the company is US based.

Most corporations worldwide try to promote contests like this to find employment without immigration, simply because it costs so much less to stay domestic.

Set for use in the World of Warcraft? What's a matter Blizzard tired of using your professional artists trash. I couldn't think of a more perfect way for Blizzard to add more colorful garbage into the game without having to pay for it. Congratz!

@Corum: do you play this game so you can come up with reasons to complain about it? if you hate it so much just stop playing. unless you have nothing better to do... *cough* no life *cough* jk but im being serious about the rest

I used to do graphic design and modeling as a profession and for those who need to know a good base for software to use I would suggest Poser, Maya, and Vue D' Espri for Plant and terrain work. Also would use Photoshop (and did) for post work. Also agree that it should be open to any student inso much as I believe that there are some extremely good renders in high school and that they should have a chance to strut their stuff also.

@Tustim: Considering that the contest exists, if anyone enters, SOMEONE will win, so technically, there is a 100% chance that someone will win, just a low chance of any INDIVIDUAL winning.

It saddens me slightly that everyone seems to say it's going to be a 3D rendered piece. I'm an Illustration major, and my college hasn't gone over the 3D graphic design aspects of it in their foundation year. It's mainly focusing on Photoshop painting, and Fine Arts courses, which puts me at a great disadvantage, due to the steep learning curve of having not been introduced to any of the programs that those going in for Graphic Design majors have learned thoroughly. Oh well, there's always next contest.
