Blizzard Entertainment's Student Art Contest

Blizzard Entertainment's Student Art Contest

Blizzard Entertainment's university relations and World of Warcraft development team are proud to present their first-ever student art contest.

If you’re a current university or college student you could be one of three grand-prize winners to be awarded a package containing a t-shirt, a free year of World of Warcraft, a Blizzard notebook containing an original sketch, and a three-month mentorship with a World of Warcraft artist! Submissions must consist of a 3D modeled and textured set piece, fit for use in World of Warcraft.

Check out the link for more information, official rules, and submission form.

The submission deadline is January 15, 2012. Good luck!

Pardon my confusion, I'm not much of an artist but it might be fun to try something out.

This is a purely computer drawn thing? Meaning you aren't making an actual model of whatever it is you designed?

@Åvatar: I believe that you must make a concept art piece, then, using computer programs, make a 3D model of that, such as what you would see in the game.

Taken from the rules: "How to Enter: Qualified entrants will prepare and submit an original environment piece fit for Sponsor’s World of Warcraft environment. Submissions should attempt to match the art style used for World of Warcraft, creating a small environment diorama that must include trees, rocks, grass, and props, plus a small structure or shrine. Submissions should utilize a lower poly count, e.g.: around 1,500 polys for a mature-sized tree. "

@Lorinall: Since this is geared towards students and they are offering mentoring and possibly exposure it's fine. But if you're a professional artist you should never enter contests because it's a way for companies to troll for free stock artwork / comp sketches / logo's etc without properly paying an artist for their time.

@Daelyan: Exactly! Blizzard may be looking to hire more artists and what better way to find a few good ones than by holding a contest for college students? It's also a great way to see if someone can start and finish a project by themselves.
