Till Death Do You Part

Till Death Do You Part

Players across Azeroth have recently embraced a new, very personal achievement: leveling a character "Iron Man" style. What started out as only a small movement, this bare bones, no-frills style of play has now transformed into a community-wide call-to-arms known as the Iron Man WoW Challenge, inviting World of Warcraft enthusiasts to see how close they can get to level cap with only the barest of necessities.

The goal of the Iron Man WoW challenge is simple: level from 1 to 85. The catch, however, is that you must accomplish this task without the assistance of talents, class specialization, stat-improved gear, professions, buffs, item enhancements, or other players. And if you die? Well, then it’s back to square one.

Here are some of the latest rules:

1. All gear employed must be White or Grey. Also, no Heirlooms of any sort.
2. No transfer of gear, items, or money from any other character (yours or others).
3. No gear enhancement(s), thus no socketed gems, enchanting or reforging. Exceptions exist for class abilities (example: rogue poisons).
4. No specializations, talent points, or glyphs. This restriction also applies to talent points for pets.
5. No professions or secondary skills. An exception is made for First Aid.
6. No potions/flasks/elixirs (except those labeled as quest Items).
7. No food buffs or other external buffs (this includes buffs from items and other players).
8. No grouping or assistance from other characters, even if not grouped.
9. No dungeons/raids. No battlegrounds/arenas.
10. No guilds. An exception is made for Iron Man guilds. No guild perks.
11. No Recruit-A- Friend activities. The intention of the challenge is that it be done without assistance.
12. No add-ons that assist in combat and/or leveling.
13. THE BIG ONE: No deaths. Character death for any reason disqualifies the character.

Permitted:
- All mounts
- All bags/containers
- All quests (including holiday and daily quests)
- You may train and use all your class skills (including your own buffs)

Interested? Awesome! To sign-up for the Iron Man WoW Challenge and discuss your progress with fellow participants (once you get started), head on over to the official forums. Additional rules and details can also be found on the unofficial Iron Man WoW website, hosted and moderated by players like you.

Thanks to Cautious-Kirin Tor, Neverdied-Durotan, Sandinhiseye-Feathermoon, Haldren-Proudmoore, Selenagnomez-Kil'jaeden, and everyone else who's helped inspire and promote this challenge!

@Magí: Well, that kinda misses the point of accomplishing a "personal" challenge. "Personally" it doesn't matter a whole lot to me if someone is a liar or not... just so long as said person isn't actually hurting anyone with the lie, that is. ;)

There is another variant of this challenge, is entirely aimed at people on PvP servers. You can die, as many times as you like but you're not allowed to kill anything or anyone from levels 1 to 85, and you're not allowed to equip any armor or weapons outside of things you gain from your archaeology profession.

You may perform 'profession dailies' (and now Darkmoon Faire dailies) as long as they conform to all of the other rules listed.

The only ways you're allowed to gain XP at all, are from mining, herbalism and archaeology, and profession dailies. No dungeons, no raids, no pvp, no other questing.

The challenge is doing so with a /played time of less than 30 days by level 85, and having Mining, Herbalism, Cooking, Archaeology, & Fishing at 525, while still having zero npc, player or critter kills.I've heard of entire guilds doing this as a alt leveling challenge and the first player to 85 without disqualifying themselves would win either a store mount, Mechanohog/Chopper or a Vial of the Sands.

@Ärdeth: No questing and no professions. Professions just make it way too easy to level. Additionally, doing dailies would allow one to level without ever leaving their home city.

@Taggthemage: I was simply pointing out to everyone else that questing and professions are off limits and the reasons why.

This isn't a real challenge until it's done on a PvP server.

@Clik: I've done it on a PvP server. It can be done. With that said... I did this back before we had to worry about death from above. ;)

@Clik: I have done it too on a pvp server and managed to get to 63 before I was overconfident and pulled 5 mobs like a tard. It s doable on a pvp server ONLY if you do not advertize the name of the toon otherwise you are hunted down 24 hrs a day.

@Neverdied: I've done it before on a PvP realm too. You just have to become a hermit and hide in the bushes alot. :p

Would a warlock's healthstone be allowed since it is a spell used by warlocks?

When mi Diablo II character died after 8 months i almost cry. so no way im into this.

But i admire those who go for that sort of thing, and if they get to 85, sure as
hell they deserve achivements or some kind of stuff, cookies maybe, dunno.

Blizzard should add an official achievement/feat of strength for this, I think it would be pretty simple. Everyone starts flagged as making progress towards it, and as soon as one of the disqualifying events occurs (equipping something, using a potion, dying) you are unflagged and can no longer complete it.

I guess we'll find out who the winner is in about 2 years, because that's how long it's going to take them with the lack of EVERYTHING.

I'm keeping my heirlooms, enchants, BGs, talents, arena matches, dungeons, food/item buffs, and anything and everything that makes my leveling faster and easier and lazier and more OP. Also, when I see someone with 10k less health than me, I'm going to hit them very very very VERY hard and they'll be screwed and have to start all over. :)

@Xelly: Ganking only counts for the gankers. If it isn't a mob related death, it doesn't count. If you're hoping get some grim satisfaction out of ruining someone's fun, then you'll just see them the next day at a higher level because they won't delete for you. ;)

@Slando: Don't care, still gonna gank. ;)

awesome... I'd been playing a partial version of this for awhile, with only the "one death and that's it" rule, deleting any character who died. I think my best was about lvl 40 on a Warrior. And I was using blues and blacksmithing.

The "no groups" rule might make this easier though because a lot of my guys died when I started going to dungeons and someone would wipe us.
