Till Death Do You Part

Till Death Do You Part

Players across Azeroth have recently embraced a new, very personal achievement: leveling a character "Iron Man" style. What started out as only a small movement, this bare bones, no-frills style of play has now transformed into a community-wide call-to-arms known as the Iron Man WoW Challenge, inviting World of Warcraft enthusiasts to see how close they can get to level cap with only the barest of necessities.

The goal of the Iron Man WoW challenge is simple: level from 1 to 85. The catch, however, is that you must accomplish this task without the assistance of talents, class specialization, stat-improved gear, professions, buffs, item enhancements, or other players. And if you die? Well, then it’s back to square one.

Here are some of the latest rules:

1. All gear employed must be White or Grey. Also, no Heirlooms of any sort.
2. No transfer of gear, items, or money from any other character (yours or others).
3. No gear enhancement(s), thus no socketed gems, enchanting or reforging. Exceptions exist for class abilities (example: rogue poisons).
4. No specializations, talent points, or glyphs. This restriction also applies to talent points for pets.
5. No professions or secondary skills. An exception is made for First Aid.
6. No potions/flasks/elixirs (except those labeled as quest Items).
7. No food buffs or other external buffs (this includes buffs from items and other players).
8. No grouping or assistance from other characters, even if not grouped.
9. No dungeons/raids. No battlegrounds/arenas.
10. No guilds. An exception is made for Iron Man guilds. No guild perks.
11. No Recruit-A- Friend activities. The intention of the challenge is that it be done without assistance.
12. No add-ons that assist in combat and/or leveling.
13. THE BIG ONE: No deaths. Character death for any reason disqualifies the character.

Permitted:
- All mounts
- All bags/containers
- All quests (including holiday and daily quests)
- You may train and use all your class skills (including your own buffs)

Interested? Awesome! To sign-up for the Iron Man WoW Challenge and discuss your progress with fellow participants (once you get started), head on over to the official forums. Additional rules and details can also be found on the unofficial Iron Man WoW website, hosted and moderated by players like you.

Thanks to Cautious-Kirin Tor, Neverdied-Durotan, Sandinhiseye-Feathermoon, Haldren-Proudmoore, Selenagnomez-Kil'jaeden, and everyone else who's helped inspire and promote this challenge!

Just getting started, all weapons and armor are white. My favorite, starting out with little to no money for training or bags. Been working the auction house like crazy and finally have a little gold. So far, no close calls and just leveled up to 13. No pots, no buffs, no talents, no glyphs, no nuttin' honey. This is definately insanity, but I like it.
(atleast until I die) :D

Loving trying this! Made 1st toon ~ died at lvl 11 because I wasn't paying attention. That just got me motivated to try again so now I have 2 more toons and am attempting with them. Since I am under the impression from the rules that you can't use pots, I am using waters and foods that ONLY restore mana and life. Don't want to fail for choosing the wrong item. Good luck to all trying this! It is insanity but fun at the same time!

@Bellå: Just to clarify, u r using only things u create yes? I believe that is wrong. It says u can use your own buffs that u are given to train in. It says NO elixirs, potions or food stuffs. So maybe u might not be able to use those items for mana an dlife. To be sure, keep checking your toon to make sure u were not flagged as using a consumable. Best of luck, hope u make it with both toons. :)

@Shektukhsasu: Maybe I read it wrong but it says no food buffs and I though any consumable is a buff of sorts. Hmm so we could eat bread and drink water? I still feel like that is considered a consumable and therefore not acceptable. But dosen't mean I am right, tho I will continue not using it.

@Silvër: It says nothing about not being allowed to use consumables. It only states that consumables that give you buffs are not allowed. Restoring mana and health is not a buff. A buff is a stat increase or something of the likes.

@Released: you should be able to find your toon on "wowironmanchallenge.com". I think that's the right site. Look for your toon by typing in your rrealm and then toon name. It will tell you if you are in by saying u are updated or added.

Potions that give you buffs are definitely out, but what about mana or health pots? Do they count? Can they be used or not? My new character is Womanofiron, hunter on Turalyon. Had to try this, don't know why but it's fun. Some one made the rules just to challenge people, I for one would like to stick with the rules, otherwise there would be no sense in trying this.

If blizz is tracking players to do this challenge, and they get disqualified for dieing, then how can this not be a competition? or am I missing something? Is there some kind of reward for this? If so what is it?

@Crzamatic: If you read right, it says challenge, not competition. That changes everything, bringing the idea that you're doing something that is more difficult than normal playing. No reward except the simple joy of succeeding at something different.

@Crzamatic: Blizz is not responsible for disquallifing a toon, it is only the "ironman challenge" site that does that, they are not a part of blizz if I read everything right, so Blizz is not doing the tracking other then maybe allowing lthe armory to be used. This was started only by players and most likely will stay that way for awhile, tho Blizz lis glad to advertise this challegne as they think it is a great idea. I do too.

Two questions come to mind. Since a priest can use "heal" on self, then can a Draeni use gift of Naaru (Forgive spelling please). I think just sitting here contemplating the rules, I have answered my second question. If there are no talent points, then being "beast master" is out of the question, therefore you cannot tame the "spirit beast" in Scholazar Basin, which is a cat that can heal. So, one question is good enough.

@Tankmspankm: All racial skills are available for one to use, so yes the Draeni healing spell is usable. You just can't use pots. No you can't spec so you can't tame the rare pet. Hunters seem to have the best luck or most peps play them.

Take away the mount option until 40 just like in vanilla, make people use the FP's until 40. Make it a little more fun to level.

This actually sounds like a lot of fun. I tried HC mode in D2. That was hard. But this might actually be fun. Bare bones, balls to the wall, Definitely gonna give this a go (just have to finish leveling my guilds Resto Shaman.) Want to try this.

@Firecroch: I'm sure they'd just make sure you off-clicked the buff or something. There's bound to be folks leveling in the same zones who haven't heard about the challenge.
