Bringing Achievements to the Account Level

Bringing Achievements to the Account Level

We recently added account-level changes to achievements in World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria, and there’s still a lot of work left before we’re done. The plan here is to illustrate the intent behind our design, which should in turn help you figure out the answers to many of your questions.

Overall, we never want you to play Character A instead of Character B because of achievement concerns. If Character A had the Violet Proto-Drake, then you might not play Character B. If Character A was only one holiday away from the Violet Proto-Drake, then you may not play Character B. If Character A had completed most of the raid achievements from Dragon Soul, you may not want to bring Character B for one fight and miss out on the achievement. Having alts is cool and working on achievements is cool, but we don’t want the two systems to work against each other.

This goal is paramount and drives everything else. If we allowed you to earn extra achievement points from completing an achievement on two different characters, then you might only want to play the character with the most points and you’d feel like you had to grind through all the achievements with every alt, thus defeating the purpose of having account-level achievements.

Most achievements are account-wide

This means you only earn the points once. If you have earned an achievement on one character, you can see it on all your characters. However, and this is important, you will still see the achievement toast (the pop-up notification) if a second or subsequent character completes the achievement. We think it’s still important to recognize milestones like reaching level 80, maxing out a profession, or killing a raid boss for the first time. It's fun to have everyone congratulate you when you get the toast. Nonetheless, this will just be a new character of yours completing the achievement that you’ve already earned on your account. You won’t double up on points.

Most criteria are not account-wide

If you start an achievement on one character, you can't then finish the achievement on another (there are exceptions, so please keep reading). We didn't think it made sense for one character to get level 60 and another to get level 20 and then see the "level 80" achievement toast. If you start to explore Thousand Needles on one character, you’ll probably want to finish that achievement on the same character.

Some achievements are "meta achievements."

These are achievements that require you to get other specific achievements. An infamous example is "What a Long, Strange Trip It's Been." These achievements generally ARE account-wide. If one character earned Noble Gardener and another character earned The Flame Warden, then your account would get Long Strange Trip. (Otherwise it would be weird: it would look as if you had the sub-achievements, but you wouldn't have the meta-achievement). Even though you need Explore Thousand Needles on one character, all of your characters can contribute to Explore Kalimdor.

A few achievements are account-only.

There are two categories of account-only achievements. One is achievements that are not possible to earn on one character. If we made an achievement to level every class to level 90, it would be account-only. (I'm not sure we will, but it's a good example.) The other category are achievements that are just brutal to complete on one character (and you’d never want to do for multiples), such as 2500 daily quests or 250K honorable kills. In these cases, the cumulative work of all your characters on those criteria will count.

We hope that rewards granted from achievements (pets, mounts, titles, and tabards) will be shared at the account level.

I'm not going to promise this yet, because a lot of magic has to happen for that to work, but it's our intent. We have discussed having a character level requirement for some rewards, so that your level-2 gnome couldn’t walk around with the “Defender of a Shattered World” title just because your level-90 shaman earned it. If the gnome made it to level 80, though, you could proudly show off your title. You also won’t be able to use a faction-specific pet, mount, or title on the wrong faction. The achievement wouldn’t go away -- you just wouldn’t be able to show it off on that character. There are probably additional exceptions and details we’ll find as we dig deeper into the system.

This is the kind of system that will evolve over time, and we don’t think this has to be the way achievements work forever. As beta players start experimenting with it and offering feedback, I am certain that we will end up making even more changes.

I find it VERY unfair, that you decided to nerf shamans so far into the ground, that my main of 7 years now, has to be retired. and then you go ahead and account wide all my goodies, so i can reroll no heartache.. but then.. you go and Not allow shared Rep achivs.. so my shaman at 45/50 now HAS to be played in order to finish out my Beloved title.. i dont want to play her. you Ruined her. and now you have ruined my shot at this achiv because i refuse to go back and grind things on my new rerolled alt. i thought the purpose was to avoid having to play Shaman A JUST to finish an achiv when I was so displeased with the changes that i rerolled hunter on awhole new server to get away from the shame of my now broken class. Thanks a bunch. im gonna go play maplestory now. its a better investment of time.

I am glad that I am not the only one frustrated with the account wide achievements. I understand how some of them are helpful, but it seems like some of the challenge of the game is gone. I personally enjoy doing the dungeons on my alts. I hope they do come up with an option.

The fact that my achievements are account-wide isnt a bad thing, but, it ruins it for me in my opinion. now my new characters i start have these achievements completed that ive done on my main. I really would like/think an option to edit wether you want to see all Characters achievements, or None, would be a great idea.

Perhaps the best thing to do would be to have two sections of in the achievements menu when viewing your own and others achievements.

One section for account-wide, so everyone viewing your achievements knows that you've done this and that before, without doing it again.

The second would start off completely blank, no achievements whatsoever, allowing the player to obtain them once again.

I enjoy starting a new toon and earning the achievements. This is just silly. Trying to figure out what my new toon needs to acomplish is just annoying win I have all of my 80 alts achievements. There have been some great changes but this is not one of them. Please return it to how it was or offer a choice if you want same or seperate achievements for our characters.

First off, I am having a great time with the MOP expansion itself. That being said, I do not like this account-wide nonsense. I will never forget the thrill of the hunt when I found my TLPD. It is a shame I will not have that shot of adrenaline again. Sure, I can still hunt for it with an alt, but it's not the same ... and the motivation just isn't there if you already have access to the award. And besides, that's not the point. I feel somewhat cheated and so should everyone else. If one of my alts is seen with the TLPD, the pride just isn't there that I actually earned it. When I see other toons with the TLPD, I have to ask myself if they actually earned it. It should be up to us whether or not we want an alt to grind for an achievement. If you don't want to work for it, then that is on you. Blizzard is continuously dumbing down the game ... making it easier to "achieve" awards. This is very disappointing. All rewards should be in game only (in reference to store-bought mounts for example) and as tough as they originally were to attain.

@Shadohr: in a sense they dumbed getting achievements down, and they should create an option on wether we want/have access to our main's achievements, or we dont. off, and on.

I haven't read this first time around cuz I thought it was illralivent <or however that spelled>. But notice some achievements I gain from other of my Alts I didn't gain in others I was confuse to say the least. I read this as I heard there sharing achievement on account as I slowly learning about it. After the incident with one of my Alt, I figure it out as lvling achievement is with the Alts as there achievement like RoB or CoC is with the Account. This Topic need to be known as I think they maybe some that confuse as I was, or was that just me?

Sounds like a lot of people like doing the same thing over and over on alt after alt. I for one am glad achieves are shared, makes me more likely to change mains for a new playstyle. Plus this will allow some of you folks a chance remember what the sun looks like instead of trying to get that proto-drake mount for the 6th time.

Well Ghostcrawler I have to post this hoping you read it and do something about it. The game is going to trash, it really is. To begin with, this cross realm crud has basically broken the game. Every time i fly into a crz, my passenger gets tossed off. Every time i fly anywhere near Wintergrasp I get dropped from my mount to death, and that causes repair bills that should never be incurred. You should be reimbursing all of that gold period, regardless of "policy". Its a game issue and players should not be penalized for game issues. Let's talk a rare item someone may want, hahaha good luck! You have to compete now with 10 million players to get Poseidus, TLPD, or a minfernal battle pet. Those locations look like a Saturday night gathering at a capital city 24/7 now. Not to even mention all of the disappering enchants and gems I have experienced since MOP rolled out. I have to ask, is this the product wow is proud to charge us monthly for?!! I have had more than one game master tell me these issues are "normal and an acceptable part of the game." Really, Ghostcrawler is that your opinion? Normal and acceptable?!

This new achievement sharing thing is stupid i like to collect things on alts and keep it that way but instead i have my other charecters with of the alliance and all the other titles it ruins the game and achievement collecting is something i love doing but this new thing you already have most of the achievements you can collect at low lvl which makes lvling a new toon no fun - Please change it back to Charecter only achievements

So. Loremaster. . Would that be one of those "earn different subachievs on different toons, get the meta account wide" type deals? I've put some serious work into it on my pally, but if i could do more on my hunter that would be great too, seeing as I want to main on him this xpac.

First off - I have really enjoyed all of Pandaria so far. The scenery, especially, is breathtaking! Great job all around!
Now on to the account-wide business. I understand the reasoning behind it. Some of the achievements, etc., are hell to earn or complete - so not having to repeat them with each new character is fine. However, it would be nice to have an option in the interface to allow us to make the decision about this each character if we want to. Not just an On/Off toggle, but a way to customize it for each character in each of the areas (mounts, pets, exploration, etc.).
One other thing. I started another Death Knight and even before I could click on the first quest there were other players riding all around on Frostsabers and other mounts (even a Mammoth!) on the Acherus. At the Battle for Light's Hope Chapel I found myself surrounded by other player DK's, not on their Acherus Deathchargers, but Frostsabers, a Mechanostrider, a Fossilized Raptor and a Swift Love Bird. I'm not a roleplayer, but this kind of disrupted the atmosphere and experience of the entire DK starting area. Can this be blocked from happening?

I have been working on What a Long, Strange Trip It's Been for a year only because I wanted to save the cost of fast flying. I don't really care about getting the drake. Now that I am one holiday event from getting it, it has been removed? I can't believe Blizzard has done that. I don't even care and never expected it to be account wide. I spent many hours slowly flying around not getting to mining nodes quickly enough to beat another player because my flying was so slow, but knew once I completed the achievement, I'd have my fast flying. You can't remove a reward like that when people are in the middle of trying to get it, especially one that takes so long and so many playing hours.

Whilst personally for all my alts this is great, its not so great when you share an account. The feeling of you having achieved isn't there because..well..you haven't earnt the achievement. Something on interface we can check or uncheck would be helpful, so we can choose when we want to earn our own achievements and when to sit back and enjoy our husbands earning something for us:P

There are good and bad points to this change. From the moment I created my panda I had all the achievements. Level 1 panda with the seeker and level 80 achievement is wrong. Was riding on armored bear which is bought in Dalaran. I personally do not like this change. But can be good for others. Maybe have a toggle on the achievements.

I can't express enough how much I love this change. My 'Achievement Toon' was really the only toon I bothered doing any Achievements on because she had the most and I didn't want to go back and have scattered points across all my toons. And I have a LOT of toons because I greatly enjoy playing alts. This change makes me so happy because now I can bring that alt in on an old-school run, I can bring the tank or healer or dps.. I don't just have to bring the 'Achievement Toon' because that's the the only toon the points will make a difference on.

THANK YOU

With this change it is like playing any other video game, get the achievements, game over. Start a new toon and all you have to look forward to is leveling, no longer a challenge to get mounts - pets - or achievements.

It is hard for me to understand why folks don't like this. The achievement log for WoW has been behind the times for even Blizzard games(ie: Diablo 3 achievements for capping multiple classes as well capping more then one of each class).
The main thing i had hoped this would address is the Holiday quests. While I used to enjoy the holiday events i have given them up since I've switched not only the class i play but the realm over the years I've played and am not interested in repeating quest/achievement lines that can take as long as a year to complete(ie: the brewmaster title). I'm still holding out hope that this will happen.

I do understand why folks would at least want the option to replay content but once you've completed it there is no sense in having to do things all over everytime you want to lvl a new class or play in a different realm.
As well i have PvP achievements on a hunter in one realm yet these aren't shared with the hunter i currently play on in a different realm. Why? Have I not already shown the skill to get that achievement?
Anyway, I like this and hope it goes further so that achievement hunting doesn't seem like a waste.

I'm really dissatisfied with this change. I do understand why it was made; it very clearly is intended to make it easier for those who switch back and forth between multiple toons who have hit the level cap. But for those of us who enjoy levelling alts, starting a new character with dozens of mounts, pets & hundreds of achievements DOES take away from the fun of the game, following its storyline and unlocking its secrets. I would much rather be given the option to make achievements etc. account-wide or not. Alternatively, could completed account-wide achievements perhaps appear as a different color for toons that haven't got those achievements, changing to the regular color only when a given toon gets the achievement for his/herself.

I was working on getting "What a long strange trip" on all my toons, and had it for 3. Now those 3 have the 310% riding speed reward, and the rest of my toons don't. Now I cant seem to get this reward for the 6 that were almost done, even tho they can use the blue proto drake. I cont care about the proto drake, I want the 310% flying speed without spending 30,000 gold.

I am going to be honest here. I believe this is a huge milestone for the World of Warcraft franchise and am so happy to see this coming into action. For so long have I been putting off playing certain characters just because of achievements (yes it must be an OCD thing). This and account-wide mounts made my WoW experience so much better than before. Thanks, and keep on rocking Blizzard!

Not happy with the changes at all. I think they definitely causes problems with role playing. Another problem is those of us who share our account with a minor child. This was not well thought out. Would like to see an option for us to clear our achievement log completely if it is to be account wide. A method of removing mounts from the list would also be handy.
