Cross-Realm Zones Coming to Beta

Cross-Realm Zones Coming to Beta

In the World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria beta, we’re introducing a new technology that will enable players to meet up and group with other players in under populated areas of the world such as low level zones or areas that other players may have outleveled or moved on from. This technology will allow players to form a group with other players from within a select pool of realms in order to quest just like they normally would while still allowing the social structures of their home realms to remain intact.

F.A.Q.

Q. Why cross-realm zones?
For many years now, the significant majority of the player population online at any given time has consisted mostly of characters at or near the level cap.  This has resulted in an environment where characters that are leveling up experience a world that has fewer other players to interact with than what the world was designed for. Cross-realm zones give us the capability to ensure that level-up zones retain a population size that feels more like the high level areas of the game, leading to a more fun play experience for characters of all levels.

Q. How do cross-realm zones work?
When you’re in a zone that is set as a ‘cross-realm zone’ you’ll notice that in addition to the players you’d ordinarily see from your realm, you’ll also see (and be able to play with) players from other realms.  This will happen seamlessly, and players will be able to group and quest as they normally would with players from their own realm.

Q. How will this work on boats or zeppelins?
Usually transitions will occur on area boundaries (think moving from Darkshore to Ashenvale).

Q. Can I form groups with the people I meet in the zone?
Yes! You can group and talk to others within the cross-server zone normally though trading will be restricted much as it is within raids, dungeons, or battlegrounds.

Q. Will my cross-realm group be disbanded if we move on to an adjacent zone together, like from Goldshire to Westfall or from Thousand Needles to Feralas?
Much like how cross-realm groups currently work, your party won’t be disbanded when you move through different zones, though if you’re not in the same home realm, you won’t be able to see each other if you’re  in separate zone instances.

Q. Will I be able to group with my friends?
Yes, you will be able to group with your Real ID friends, provided they are within the same faction. The functionality works the same as it does for cross-realm dungeons, raids, or Battlegrounds.

Q. What level range do my friends and I have to be within in order to group?
There is no restriction on level ranges. You’ll be able to group with anyone you would normally be able to.

Q. Can I go into main capital cities while grouped with others?
Capital cities and areas with regularly high populations will not be set as cross-server areas/zones so you will not be able to enter into the same instance of a city as someone who is from a different realm.

Q. Will I be able to trade with others I meet?
Trading restrictions are in place much the same as they are in cross-realm dungeons, raids, and battlegrounds.

Q. How is group loot handled?
Group looting will function the same as it would with any group you would create through normal play.

Q. Who will I be playing with?
You’ll be able to interact with players from within a select pool of realms which will make it possible to run into a player in Redridge that you already ran into within Westfall.

Q. What areas will be shared?
This can vary from realm to realm and relies on how densely populated (or underpopulated) an area is. Capital cities and areas with regularly high populations will not be eligible for area sharing.

Q. What about resources or gathering nodes, will those be shared too?
Resources and nodes will be available to all parties within the shared area the same as always. We will be keeping a close eye on the impact of area sharing and should an area become too populated, we are capable of adjusting how many realms are able to connect to a shared area.

Q. Does this mean that Auction Houses will be merged?
No, when any player access an Auction House, they will be only able to access their home realm’s Auction House.

Q. What about zones that are already overpopulated, like new race starting zones?
With this technology, we can also flag zones to allow for more than one copy of that zone per realm. Players on that realm will be split among those copies in order to alleviate problems due to overpopulation.  Players won’t normally see or interact with those on a different instance of their zone, although joining a party will relocate all party members to a single instance of that zone.

Q. How will this work for PvP vs. PvE realms? Will these realm types be shared?
No. Realm types will be matched with like realm types. So if you’re on a PvE realm, you’ll only be matched with other PvE realms. The same rules will apply for matching RP realm types and will be restricted to matching RP-PvP with RP-PvP and RP-PvE with RP-PvE. We plan to keep an eye on constructive feedback while testing this new technology.

Q. How will RID groups work? Which realm type would we play on?
If you group up with somebody from a different rule type (via RealID for example) and go into a cross-realm zone you’ll be on the ruleset for that player’s realm type. So, if you’re on a PvP realm and a friend joins your group from a PvE realm and enters a cross-realm zone, the group will be in one of the PvP realm clusters and will use the PvP realm ruleset.

I played on a high pop realm for 2.5 years and paid for transfer to a lower pop server 3.5 years ago for a reason! Now my main, but mainly my alts, are being ganked by the same players I paid to get away from. And in most cases it's not even toons of the same lvl, but 90s. I have no problem with PvP as long as they're from MY realm. There was an entire raid group from a high pop realm ganking Goldshire the other day when I was running a wee alt. She didn't survive a minute after zoning back from the Faire. Additionally, farming mats to lvl profs has become equally as frustrating, especially in the non-Pardaria zones, and is yet another reason I paid for a transfer.

Please provide an enable/disable option.

This is the worst feature I have seen since I started playing. Blizzard are bloodsuckers trying to get every last cent possible. 100mill 200m? nope we need BILLIONS. horrible feature. completely ruined the game for me. Wish I never bought MoP. I will be going back to guildwars 2 and League of Legends until this is removed. And trust me, it will be when the subscription rate continues to fall

I agree CRZ sucks, 5 guys from my guild just closed their accounts, 6 others are about too. This whole sharing areas sucks. I like the Loremaster part of the game, Love questing on all my toons, can't do it anymore with 20 people doing the same quests. Takes forever to get anything gathered for tradeskills and if you're on a pvp server good luck. I tried working on my level 50 monk on Spirestone server pvp, I got killed 9 times in 20 minutes by 8 different people. It's not fun anymore.

If I may insert my humble opinion on this topic,
mine is not a favorable view on this CRZ business. I find that it has ruined my leveling experience as opposed to helping it. "Opt out" doesn't sound like a logical option, either have it or don't.

Adding my name to the list: I HATE CRZs. They are horrible, and take every bit of fun and smooth playability and mat gathering out of the game. I have played since 2005 and I have never been so incredibly angry at the game. It feels like a horrible rookie move and makes me frustrated every time I log. At least give us an option to opt out. Com'on, really?

I'll go ahead and just say what everyone else has already, Cross realm zones are horrible. Trying to level mining in Outland is a nightmare, even walking around in Outland is awful, before cross realm zones there would maybe be a few level 80-85 characters in the low level zones, now there's a few from about 10 different realms all in the same level 60 zone...

Sorry Blizz, but CRZ was a terrible idea. Flying into a new zone with my RAF buddy onboard is such a pain, they get dismounted every time and there's always a delay when I have to go pick them up. Also, if you fly over a rare and by the time you turn around to go get it.... sorry! You're not on that server anymore :( Lastly, I chose my server specifically for the population and faction ratio... so much for that!

Blizzard i absolutely love this feature. Mainly bc i world pvp alot. But my problem is if u guys are saving money doing this why dont you lower the sub cost to like 5 dollars bc 15 is exsessive. This is 2013 and there are mmos with no sub cost.

your losing millions of dollars a day from people quitting this game and still you choose to keep this gang related feature? CRZ fails! give us back our servers, if we wanted to compete against another person over something it was good but you cannot compete against a gang of them. also the looting system should give all people the choice of the gear that boss drops , say i killed a boss, there should be all the possible loot that boss drops in a window and let us choose what piece of gear we want from that boss, so we do not hafta run LFR for 8 weeks trying to get a drop and getting 8 pieces of junk for the entire xpac from the same boss. and again CRZ fails!

Absolutely loathe this feature. You can't adventure anywhere low-level because of all the crowding. This is the most annoying thing Blizz has done to the game. If you're going to load too many people in an area AT LEAST up the respawn rates. The game feels more like waiting in line for a ride than having any fun.

The best thing that you can do blizz in the next patch is let us turn this CRZ on/off. The pet/mount hunters don't like this and if you ever read your forums you will find out that other's don't like it as well.

As a feature it has put pretty much put me out of the game.
My PC is older and I'm not flush with cash for a new one.
I played on a low population server to compensate for less RAM, a slower processor and an older video driver. Despite these shortcomings I got along well for two plus years but with the advent of cross realm the combination of paralyzing lag and random disconnects have made even running a daily in Ironforge a trauma. I have to imagine Blizz there are a lot of folks in the same boat as I. Do you even have an actuarial department ? Did anyone calculate a comparative estimate on how many subscription dollars you might lose vs money saved on operating fewer servers ? In the end that is what this feature is really all about. Cost containment measures wherever you can implement them. I've enjoyed playing your game but not enough to drop a grand on a new computer. I'll run out the clock on my last time card and pack it up. If you choose to reverse or provide an opt out option on this feature please make it known and I will happily return.

they shouldn't make this a mandatory feature, there should be like a toggle switch for it in the interface. probable the most hated change in the game so far, good in theory but most people hate it. to be honest i liked the peace and quite while lvling and if i needed help i would just use general chat or ask a guildy. id rather have 2-4 people in a zone than 30+ where half are OP for that area and is just causing grief by taking all the spawning nodes and killing all the mobs.

I hate t his new change, very, very hard to level in some areas way way too many people doing the same quest, not everyone likes to group all the time if all. High lvl hords from other sever rule some areas so you cannt quest at all. Really plan on quiting WOW if they dont get rid of this or make it an op.

Please get rid of this. It makes it extremely difficult for RP guilds to have an In Character guild base because of the fact that guilds on other RP severs have also chosen that location as their base. There are easy solutions to this: Create phased player housing or guild housing, or get rid of it all together.

I believe everyone is unsatified with this. My comlaint: I ran into two awesome people from a diffrent realm, had a great time, and COULDN"T FRIEND THEM. They we're level 90, I was level 50. People are saying these cross-realm zones are a Blizzard attempt to save money on server costs. Prove you're still a viable company and save the players some grief by eliminating this feature.
