Cross-Realm Zones Coming to Beta

Cross-Realm Zones Coming to Beta

In the World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria beta, we’re introducing a new technology that will enable players to meet up and group with other players in under populated areas of the world such as low level zones or areas that other players may have outleveled or moved on from. This technology will allow players to form a group with other players from within a select pool of realms in order to quest just like they normally would while still allowing the social structures of their home realms to remain intact.

F.A.Q.

Q. Why cross-realm zones?
For many years now, the significant majority of the player population online at any given time has consisted mostly of characters at or near the level cap.  This has resulted in an environment where characters that are leveling up experience a world that has fewer other players to interact with than what the world was designed for. Cross-realm zones give us the capability to ensure that level-up zones retain a population size that feels more like the high level areas of the game, leading to a more fun play experience for characters of all levels.

Q. How do cross-realm zones work?
When you’re in a zone that is set as a ‘cross-realm zone’ you’ll notice that in addition to the players you’d ordinarily see from your realm, you’ll also see (and be able to play with) players from other realms.  This will happen seamlessly, and players will be able to group and quest as they normally would with players from their own realm.

Q. How will this work on boats or zeppelins?
Usually transitions will occur on area boundaries (think moving from Darkshore to Ashenvale).

Q. Can I form groups with the people I meet in the zone?
Yes! You can group and talk to others within the cross-server zone normally though trading will be restricted much as it is within raids, dungeons, or battlegrounds.

Q. Will my cross-realm group be disbanded if we move on to an adjacent zone together, like from Goldshire to Westfall or from Thousand Needles to Feralas?
Much like how cross-realm groups currently work, your party won’t be disbanded when you move through different zones, though if you’re not in the same home realm, you won’t be able to see each other if you’re  in separate zone instances.

Q. Will I be able to group with my friends?
Yes, you will be able to group with your Real ID friends, provided they are within the same faction. The functionality works the same as it does for cross-realm dungeons, raids, or Battlegrounds.

Q. What level range do my friends and I have to be within in order to group?
There is no restriction on level ranges. You’ll be able to group with anyone you would normally be able to.

Q. Can I go into main capital cities while grouped with others?
Capital cities and areas with regularly high populations will not be set as cross-server areas/zones so you will not be able to enter into the same instance of a city as someone who is from a different realm.

Q. Will I be able to trade with others I meet?
Trading restrictions are in place much the same as they are in cross-realm dungeons, raids, and battlegrounds.

Q. How is group loot handled?
Group looting will function the same as it would with any group you would create through normal play.

Q. Who will I be playing with?
You’ll be able to interact with players from within a select pool of realms which will make it possible to run into a player in Redridge that you already ran into within Westfall.

Q. What areas will be shared?
This can vary from realm to realm and relies on how densely populated (or underpopulated) an area is. Capital cities and areas with regularly high populations will not be eligible for area sharing.

Q. What about resources or gathering nodes, will those be shared too?
Resources and nodes will be available to all parties within the shared area the same as always. We will be keeping a close eye on the impact of area sharing and should an area become too populated, we are capable of adjusting how many realms are able to connect to a shared area.

Q. Does this mean that Auction Houses will be merged?
No, when any player access an Auction House, they will be only able to access their home realm’s Auction House.

Q. What about zones that are already overpopulated, like new race starting zones?
With this technology, we can also flag zones to allow for more than one copy of that zone per realm. Players on that realm will be split among those copies in order to alleviate problems due to overpopulation.  Players won’t normally see or interact with those on a different instance of their zone, although joining a party will relocate all party members to a single instance of that zone.

Q. How will this work for PvP vs. PvE realms? Will these realm types be shared?
No. Realm types will be matched with like realm types. So if you’re on a PvE realm, you’ll only be matched with other PvE realms. The same rules will apply for matching RP realm types and will be restricted to matching RP-PvP with RP-PvP and RP-PvE with RP-PvE. We plan to keep an eye on constructive feedback while testing this new technology.

Q. How will RID groups work? Which realm type would we play on?
If you group up with somebody from a different rule type (via RealID for example) and go into a cross-realm zone you’ll be on the ruleset for that player’s realm type. So, if you’re on a PvP realm and a friend joins your group from a PvE realm and enters a cross-realm zone, the group will be in one of the PvP realm clusters and will use the PvP realm ruleset.

@Kharga: I think everyone who keeps saying this is unaware of what leveling is like anymore. Go level another toon. I'm on Mal'Ganis, the 3rd most populated server in the game, and I level by myself. Merging realms only helps cap levels. While merging realms is something that needs to be done, it does nothing to help the people leveling. Most people have 3-8 85s, and don't level toons anymore.
I'm the same way. I spend a TON of time raiding, doing dailies, and other things at cap level, but I maybe level one hour per week, sometimes two or three if I'm really bored.
Point is, no one levels, and it needs to be done. Undoubtedly, it will be super buggy when it first comes out, but welcome to the world of development/programming. In the end, it will be a good thing.

Great idea....but you only provided a partial solution...something needs to be done about low realms AH. Little or no crafting, gems, enchants, etc. On low realms is very frustrating...we might as well make another toon on a more populated realm.

just my opionon...this is a gread idea...but they should put a tad less restrictions on it...I have a few ideas that could be toyed with in this manner but again...I dont work for blizzard so I doubt I would have much inpact other than making other people possibly saying ""oh...that sounds cool""

i feel like this is a poor answer to all the people in "dead" servers that just want free x-fers to a lively server. I think i've seen blues in the forums respond to players saying that they see 5 people in Stormwind, that this is the new answer to their problems.

This is my take on this new update... Its going to happen get over it secondly, what wow needs its a whole new faction. maybe one that's on the other side of azeroth no one said it wasn't bigger no one said it was flat... !@#$ we got outland, and still we got the same factions for what is it now 8 years... its time to up the stakes. the enemy of my enemy is my friend type thing... push the undead and humans together to work as one, push troll's and dranais to work together... you see were this is going, the new faction idk what to call it but 5-6 new races seen and never before seen merfolk ( yes ones that can live outside water... but are faster in water, ect..). also you don't need to take out dungeon finder but make it loot based not exp based no free blue either... make it worth while but i still like my idea...

It brings back memories of "BARRENS CHAT" .... other than that its not going to change anything . For players from vanilla many if not most have 1 of each class for which the 1 extra slot for a monk is an awsome idea... now as soon as MoP comes out these x-realm zones are going to be way over populated for a looooong time ( 2 months if I/you have a life out of wow ) after that its going to be as dead as it always was . Besides level up zones are not defined ...will it include all zones that are not new to the next xpac?

I agree with diamondjaxx, but sorry bub theres no way this game will ever become an aim and shoot and dodge kinda game (like God Of War). The amount of lag some people face, especially in a 25 DS for example, will make it impossible to coordinate anything. This game will likely always be a point and click combat game...

This is the worst idea WOW has come up with yet (in a list of bad ideas lately). People move 2 diff servers 2 GET AWAY FROM problem people and now they will be able to still mess with you. Also farming needed resources will become a bigger problem than it is now. Shame on U WOW.

@Toxsan: I agree. Not only will farming resources become harder, but also quests involving the killing of mobs and bosses. While this might (depending on who you talk to) improve the social aspects of the game, I believe the overall effect on the game will be quite negative.

@Toxsan: I completely agree with you on the farming issue, but if someone is messing with you, you can block them. Even if its cross realm. You'll also never be grouped with them in an instance either.

Can we plz make our own personal banks bigger, more slots, bigger bags. I like most ppl like to keep strange and odd objects but putting them in Void space is way too expensive, and becos most of them are soulbound you cant post them to ur alts guild bank. VOID storage is too expensive anyway, so give us another bank slot or two...PLEASEEEeeee UPDATE the MAMMOTH, it used to NOT take damage, it used 2b unique being able to carry 2 ppl, it used to have items valued for its time, now, like the Hog it takes damage, other drakes, hogs etc can carry ppl so its not unique anymore and the items in their storage are soooo out of date,,,,,,the cost of the Mammoth is still expensive so pleaseeee make the mana, food, poison, ankhs or watever to SUIT a lvl 85, and why make the repairs that much extra wen portals are so easy to get. Fp's are so abundant, portals are everywhere,,so why pay an extraa 40gold on ur Mammoth...pleasee update the Mammoth )))

This is kinda TOOOO L8, all big guilds have LEFT windrunner and gone to different servers cos we were always 3 to 1 ratio down and we never had enuf ppl to form raids or win bg's like Wg or Tol b before they capped them, like i said TOO L8. So really it's probably a good idea so lower realms get help I guess, we just gotta rely on bigger realms to help littler realms with raids.....IF they think we are geared and experienced enuf. Like why come to Windrunner wen only 2-3 guilds are raiders, they dont need you and you won't join lower guilds to help them<<why wud you, rhetorical question.

I started playing just before second expansion came out. I do miss the hardness of the game. It has become so easy it takes no skill to play. I remember hogger used to take two or three people to kill him. It made you feel good when you finally was able to kill him. There was a sense of accomplishment. Now I do not have the same feeling I used to have. When you start a new character you can have them to level 20 in no time. I do not know all the tech stuff some of you have been talking about but as for me it has lost some of the fun. I liked the challenge when you quested. WoW has seemed to lost the punch it use to have. I don't know maybe is just me.

This.. needs to be monitored carefully.. it could be a very good and neat new thing. BUT, coming from one of the few left standing rich RP servers I worry that even mixing it up with other RP realms will open the flood gates for griefers that have killed off RP on their home realms with such discouraging behavior. On WrA it is not uncommon to find Brill or Stonard and other areas alive with activity from RP events. Idk... we shall see I suppose.

I think it's a great idea. It makes me sad when I go back to earlier areas and find them almost completely abandoned. At one time Dalaran was a booming city and now it is a ghost town. Before Cataclysm, Stormwind was a ghost town. I think the cities should be places of interaction.

Really?!?!?!? Since when has anyone needed t ogroup anywhere but 5 mans or raids? BC maaaayyybe? Vanilla it was pretty awesome to have a friend to lvl with but these days it slows me down. IMO a TOTAL waste of time and resorces that could have been used better. Like mmm maybe more then 3 new heroics at end of cata. Dont get me wrong the first few times I ran HoTs I had some fun but after running them on 7 lvl 85s for VP caps it got old FAST. Thanks Blizz for yet another "neat" addition to WoW. Neat yet useless IMO

A lot of people are on here offering many good suggestions, however might I suggest you move your comments and posts over to the forums, where a Blizzard member may actually read them. Comments on these old Dev posts aren't going to be as read and supported as a forum post.

But do what you will, just a suggestion.

On a few things that you guys seem to be all unanimous in agreeing about:

Old Models -
I 100% agree. The game is getting older, and the Human/Orc models that haven't changed since 2005 are becoming quite the disappointment. As a company, we must understand Blizzard does quite a lot in terms of developing WoW, much of which we do not see. However I am of the belief that a model/texture update is not as difficult as many other things they could do, and to be honest it would make a huge difference to old players. To finally see justice done to their favorite 85, who they've leveled with since beginning WoW. Perhaps next expansion with enough lobbying, we will see this content fixed.

Compulsion -
I also find this one in agreeance with a good game's agenda. I can respect the way they have built the game, and that many players might prefer the simplistic method that is WoW, meaning that by crunching numbers you get better DPS, or you are able to fire off that heal to save the Tank just in time, BUT (and this is a big but), there are more players out there - players that refuse to play WoW for this very reason - who would find a more engaging combat appealing. As Diamondjaxx stated, I DON'T want to stand around pressing buttons to maximize DPS, I'd much prefer to dive away from the boss's massive cleave, missing it by a hairline. And while I'm thinking of it, whatever happened to actual hitboxes. I mean, I think it's fairly rediculous on a boss like Marrowgar for example, I stand back swinging at air for the whole fight, and apparently he takes damage. I'd much prefer to actually hit him.

A New Engine -
This one, this one here is the tricky one. If Blizzard was to upgrade to a new engine, it would basically be GG WoW, GLHF to WoW 2. Now I'm not saying this is a bad idea, in fact I would more than happily embrace it with open arms, however in asking this of Blizz, you're essentially asking for a new game. Based on the size and scale of the entire World of Warcraft, you're talking about years worth of development to transfer it. One does not simply pick up the game and drop it into another engine. Not knowing the logistics and minor bits and pieces of the company's ability will restrict us, but to be honest, I don't see it happening anytime soon.

One thing we must remember. Blizzard is a company out there to make money. That's about it. If they believe doing something will make them more money, they will do it. So as fans show them that you back ideas, and tell them when they !@#$ up. I assure you right now, that if the 10 million odd people who pay to play this game were to all rise up and say, "We Want A New Engine!", Blizzard would immediately set to work on remaking the game. However, like I said previously, I highly doubt that day will ever come. Until then, we simply rage and discuss on these comment threads where no-one but other players will ever look. xD

Garnor out.

...Wow, if you havn't read what Diamondjaxx said yet, scroll down! Especialy you Blizz! I 110% agree. What a dream that would be to see this game evolve. I would feel so proud of the investment i ment rather than questioning each month, "is it realy worth another month?" I know Diamondjaxx said he will be loyal to the end, but my guess is more long term subscribers are moving on. Even subscribers that have played as long as Diamondjaxx.

But you know, Blizz makes fun of themself. The quests in Hillsbrad make you a "Quest Giver" and Johnny Awsome comes along pointing out how he will ignore the content of the quest dialog because its much more complicated than what the map could simply tell him. Funny, but more tongue in cheek. It would be funnier in an evolved world looking back at the old life. Then we could all have a real laugh rather than a courtesy laugh followed by that awkward depressing reflection of your potentialy wasted time. DO SUMTHN BOUT IT BLIZZ! DO SUMTHIN! You guys WERE the bad asses, now its like you are trying to make everyone move on from WoW to play D3 or what ever new game you come out with. You WOULD make ppl playing d3 or sc2 able to talk to their friends playing WoW so they can tell them to come play this. Its smart but you know when you see through this kind of stuff, its insulting.

Ok enough of that.. I have another observation to contribute. Has anyone ever played the game RF Online? It was a great game! True fun! Heres what happened BLIZZARD; the game was intended to be a p2p game but went cash shop in open beta. Therefore the game content was amazing! But guess what happened? months turned to years and no significant updates came. They hit the ground running lookin amazing and then just kinda.. stopped.

Then something happened. Originaly on the Codemaster's (and ill explain the specification) version there were 4 servers, Fire, Wind, Water, Earth, (or sumthn like that) long story short, after a couple years, they were all merged into Novus. It was kewl but again when you look through it, it was depressing to realise that this was what we had to do now. Patience grew thin without content. Next thing we know BAM, "We appologize but our office in Korea has refused to renew our license and we will be shutting down the game effective in 3 months." ._. the few years to follow were cold and dark. But then! CCR (an original co owner of the game) came and rehosted the game! now you can still play it but guess what, still no major content updates. Servers are still being merged. Not only did it first become a leech of loyal players, but further a scam to new enthusiastic players. NO BLIZZ! Please dont end up like this! Make us proud! We believe in you guys and we believe it would make everyone happy! Invest in us like we invest in you!

I believe that this is a pretty good idea. But on a side note, there are many people complaining about how the game is to easy and starting to become childish and boring. For those people I have a good idea, how about you guys (Blizzard) make a couple of Vanilla WoW servers. It seems as though many people want Vanilla WoW back, including myself, to make the game much more challenging. In those special servers, you could remove raid finders, and dungeon finders, and make the game the way it used to be. Maybe even make the game a little bit more mature. I hope you guys at Blizzard take this into consideration because this might bring back more people that used to play, and make many of the unhappy existing players happy again.
