Cross-Realm Zones Coming to Beta

In the World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria beta, we’re introducing a new technology that will enable players to meet up and group with other players in under populated areas of the world such as low level zones or areas that other players may have outleveled or moved on from. This technology will allow players to form a group with other players from within a select pool of realms in order to quest just like they normally would while still allowing the social structures of their home realms to remain intact.
F.A.Q.
Q. Why cross-realm zones?
For many years now, the significant majority of the player population online at any given time has consisted mostly of characters at or near the level cap. This has resulted in an environment where characters that are leveling up experience a world that has fewer other players to interact with than what the world was designed for. Cross-realm zones give us the capability to ensure that level-up zones retain a population size that feels more like the high level areas of the game, leading to a more fun play experience for characters of all levels.
Q. How do cross-realm zones work?
When you’re in a zone that is set as a ‘cross-realm zone’ you’ll notice that in addition to the players you’d ordinarily see from your realm, you’ll also see (and be able to play with) players from other realms. This will happen seamlessly, and players will be able to group and quest as they normally would with players from their own realm.
Q. How will this work on boats or zeppelins?
Usually transitions will occur on area boundaries (think moving from Darkshore to Ashenvale).

Q. Can I form groups with the people I meet in the zone?
Yes! You can group and talk to others within the cross-server zone normally though trading will be restricted much as it is within raids, dungeons, or battlegrounds.
Q. Will my cross-realm group be disbanded if we move on to an adjacent zone together, like from Goldshire to Westfall or from Thousand Needles to Feralas?
Much like how cross-realm groups currently work, your party won’t be disbanded when you move through different zones, though if you’re not in the same home realm, you won’t be able to see each other if you’re in separate zone instances.
Q. Will I be able to group with my friends?
Yes, you will be able to group with your Real ID friends, provided they are within the same faction. The functionality works the same as it does for cross-realm dungeons, raids, or Battlegrounds.
Q. What level range do my friends and I have to be within in order to group?
There is no restriction on level ranges. You’ll be able to group with anyone you would normally be able to.
Q. Can I go into main capital cities while grouped with others?
Capital cities and areas with regularly high populations will not be set as cross-server areas/zones so you will not be able to enter into the same instance of a city as someone who is from a different realm.
Q. Will I be able to trade with others I meet?
Trading restrictions are in place much the same as they are in cross-realm dungeons, raids, and battlegrounds.
Q. How is group loot handled?
Group looting will function the same as it would with any group you would create through normal play.
Q. Who will I be playing with?
You’ll be able to interact with players from within a select pool of realms which will make it possible to run into a player in Redridge that you already ran into within Westfall.
Q. What areas will be shared?
This can vary from realm to realm and relies on how densely populated (or underpopulated) an area is. Capital cities and areas with regularly high populations will not be eligible for area sharing.
Q. What about resources or gathering nodes, will those be shared too?
Resources and nodes will be available to all parties within the shared area the same as always. We will be keeping a close eye on the impact of area sharing and should an area become too populated, we are capable of adjusting how many realms are able to connect to a shared area.
Q. Does this mean that Auction Houses will be merged?
No, when any player access an Auction House, they will be only able to access their home realm’s Auction House.
Q. What about zones that are already overpopulated, like new race starting zones?
With this technology, we can also flag zones to allow for more than one copy of that zone per realm. Players on that realm will be split among those copies in order to alleviate problems due to overpopulation. Players won’t normally see or interact with those on a different instance of their zone, although joining a party will relocate all party members to a single instance of that zone.
Q. How will this work for PvP vs. PvE realms? Will these realm types be shared?
No. Realm types will be matched with like realm types. So if you’re on a PvE realm, you’ll only be matched with other PvE realms. The same rules will apply for matching RP realm types and will be restricted to matching RP-PvP with RP-PvP and RP-PvE with RP-PvE. We plan to keep an eye on constructive feedback while testing this new technology.
Q. How will RID groups work? Which realm type would we play on?
If you group up with somebody from a different rule type (via RealID for example) and go into a cross-realm zone you’ll be on the ruleset for that player’s realm type. So, if you’re on a PvP realm and a friend joins your group from a PvE realm and enters a cross-realm zone, the group will be in one of the PvP realm clusters and will use the PvP realm ruleset.

I'm the same way. I spend a TON of time raiding, doing dailies, and other things at cap level, but I maybe level one hour per week, sometimes two or three if I'm really bored.
Point is, no one levels, and it needs to be done. Undoubtedly, it will be super buggy when it first comes out, but welcome to the world of development/programming. In the end, it will be a good thing.

But do what you will, just a suggestion.
On a few things that you guys seem to be all unanimous in agreeing about:
Old Models -
I 100% agree. The game is getting older, and the Human/Orc models that haven't changed since 2005 are becoming quite the disappointment. As a company, we must understand Blizzard does quite a lot in terms of developing WoW, much of which we do not see. However I am of the belief that a model/texture update is not as difficult as many other things they could do, and to be honest it would make a huge difference to old players. To finally see justice done to their favorite 85, who they've leveled with since beginning WoW. Perhaps next expansion with enough lobbying, we will see this content fixed.
Compulsion -
I also find this one in agreeance with a good game's agenda. I can respect the way they have built the game, and that many players might prefer the simplistic method that is WoW, meaning that by crunching numbers you get better DPS, or you are able to fire off that heal to save the Tank just in time, BUT (and this is a big but), there are more players out there - players that refuse to play WoW for this very reason - who would find a more engaging combat appealing. As Diamondjaxx stated, I DON'T want to stand around pressing buttons to maximize DPS, I'd much prefer to dive away from the boss's massive cleave, missing it by a hairline. And while I'm thinking of it, whatever happened to actual hitboxes. I mean, I think it's fairly rediculous on a boss like Marrowgar for example, I stand back swinging at air for the whole fight, and apparently he takes damage. I'd much prefer to actually hit him.
A New Engine -
This one, this one here is the tricky one. If Blizzard was to upgrade to a new engine, it would basically be GG WoW, GLHF to WoW 2. Now I'm not saying this is a bad idea, in fact I would more than happily embrace it with open arms, however in asking this of Blizz, you're essentially asking for a new game. Based on the size and scale of the entire World of Warcraft, you're talking about years worth of development to transfer it. One does not simply pick up the game and drop it into another engine. Not knowing the logistics and minor bits and pieces of the company's ability will restrict us, but to be honest, I don't see it happening anytime soon.
One thing we must remember. Blizzard is a company out there to make money. That's about it. If they believe doing something will make them more money, they will do it. So as fans show them that you back ideas, and tell them when they !@#$ up. I assure you right now, that if the 10 million odd people who pay to play this game were to all rise up and say, "We Want A New Engine!", Blizzard would immediately set to work on remaking the game. However, like I said previously, I highly doubt that day will ever come. Until then, we simply rage and discuss on these comment threads where no-one but other players will ever look. xD
Garnor out.

I 100% agree with you mate.

But you know, Blizz makes fun of themself. The quests in Hillsbrad make you a "Quest Giver" and Johnny Awsome comes along pointing out how he will ignore the content of the quest dialog because its much more complicated than what the map could simply tell him. Funny, but more tongue in cheek. It would be funnier in an evolved world looking back at the old life. Then we could all have a real laugh rather than a courtesy laugh followed by that awkward depressing reflection of your potentialy wasted time. DO SUMTHN BOUT IT BLIZZ! DO SUMTHIN! You guys WERE the bad asses, now its like you are trying to make everyone move on from WoW to play D3 or what ever new game you come out with. You WOULD make ppl playing d3 or sc2 able to talk to their friends playing WoW so they can tell them to come play this. Its smart but you know when you see through this kind of stuff, its insulting.
Ok enough of that.. I have another observation to contribute. Has anyone ever played the game RF Online? It was a great game! True fun! Heres what happened BLIZZARD; the game was intended to be a p2p game but went cash shop in open beta. Therefore the game content was amazing! But guess what happened? months turned to years and no significant updates came. They hit the ground running lookin amazing and then just kinda.. stopped.
Then something happened. Originaly on the Codemaster's (and ill explain the specification) version there were 4 servers, Fire, Wind, Water, Earth, (or sumthn like that) long story short, after a couple years, they were all merged into Novus. It was kewl but again when you look through it, it was depressing to realise that this was what we had to do now. Patience grew thin without content. Next thing we know BAM, "We appologize but our office in Korea has refused to renew our license and we will be shutting down the game effective in 3 months." ._. the few years to follow were cold and dark. But then! CCR (an original co owner of the game) came and rehosted the game! now you can still play it but guess what, still no major content updates. Servers are still being merged. Not only did it first become a leech of loyal players, but further a scam to new enthusiastic players. NO BLIZZ! Please dont end up like this! Make us proud! We believe in you guys and we believe it would make everyone happy! Invest in us like we invest in you!
