Introducing the Guild Mentoring Program

Introducing the Guild Mentoring Program

Azeroth -- It’s a land of turmoil, harsh and unyielding for heroes of the Horde and the Alliance as they struggle against enemies from within and without. For those stepping forth for the first time into this implacable realm, life can seem overwhelming, but surviving in this hostile environment is not insurmountable with a little help. Will your band of brothers and sisters, heroes and mentors, heed your call for aid?

Azeroth needs more heroes to rise through the ranks and your guild can help. We’re looking for a few good guilds to volunteer for the new Guild Mentoring Program. Guilds participating in the program will take part in identifying new players within selected realms, offering to invite them into the guild, and teaching them the ways of Azeroth as they level and reach the end game content.

F.A.Q.

Q. What is the Guild Mentoring Program?
A. The guild mentoring program identifies guilds on select realms to act as mentors for new and low level players (below level 85).

Q. How long does the Guild Mentoring Program run for?
A.
The Guild Mentoring Program will run for a period of four months from the time that guilds are selected and notified.

Q. Is there a certain criteria for being selected as a mentoring guild?
A.
Guilds must meet certain criteria to be considered for the Guild Mentoring Program:

  • Guilds must be located on one of the selected realms.
  • They must be willing to commit to the program for a four month period.
  • They must be willing to change their name for the four month Guild Mentoring participation period. (Names will be changed back at the end of the program.)
  • Guilds must be at least level 6 and have an active membership.

Q. How many guilds will be recruiting per realm?
A.
Only one guild will be selected per faction on each realm.

Q. What does my guild need to do to volunteer?
A.
The guild leader will need to submit an application to wowguilds@blizzard.com with the following information:

  • Current guild name and guild leader name
  • Current realm and faction of the applying guild
  • Current guild level and number of guild members
  • Guild leader’s real name and phone number (this information will not be published and is for internal use only)
  • Brief description of the Mentoring Guild

Q. How long are you accepting applications for?
A.
We will be accepting applications for two weeks. We will then select a guild for the Guild Mentoring Program from those that meet the criteria and contact the guild leader.

Q. On what realms will this program be available?
A.
Mentoring guilds will be chosen for the following realms:

Q. Do participating guilds get anything special?
A.
Some of the benefits for taking part in the program include:

  • MVP status on the forums for the guild leader and recruitment officer
  • Guild member private forum access
  • Recognition for your guild as being participants in the program

Well, if you decide to expand the realm list to include mine, I would be happy to do this with my guild. We are probably the most diverse and helpful guilds on my realm. We have even helped other guilds out and go out of our way to help others, even if thier not in my guild. Everyone deserves a chance, we give it to them! This is a great idea and I hope you extend the list.

@Kalarah: Same here..My guild was built from the get go as a "All help,All content" Guild. We to help none guildies when asked out in the world and help most any guild on my server, or at least the guilds that we know help others or at least havent been a total jerk guild. We even take ppl from raid guilds that get crapped on left and right for not being wow gods from day one, we then help teach them the content. Funnny how we never have to yell or hmm we never make em feel bad for trying...We r immortal..if we die we just rez and go agian lol

So sort of the WoW version of EVE-UNI (If any of you play EvE). Thats pretty cool I guess, just have to make sure the guilds treat players right.

It's not about learning the game, it's creating a positive environment for new players. Something that's not full of #%#*#%#s trying to ruin fun for new players making them feel like idiots for asking simple questions in trade chat.

Sure we learned nintendo as kids, but nintendo isn't an MMO mostly full of dinks.

You have to remember that just because your server isnt part of the program, that doesn't mean that you can't still help lowbies. If you were willing to give your time to help anyways (The rewards not being the best, anyways), just help. Stop by in Goldshire, or Northshire every once and a while, see if anyone needs help. Try to pick up lowbies before the spamming guilds pick them up and teach them their own "ways". Because the last thing WoW needs is all the lowbies being converted into little trolloids that ask if "Anyone Mentioned Thunderfury, Blessed Blade of the Windseeker".

Seriously, i try to do this on my own. If you really want to help as the program is trying to make you, then you can simply do so. The recruitment process doesnt seem to be any different from the description that is given here "Guilds participating in the program will take part in identifying new players within selected realms, offering to invite them into the guild, and teaching them the ways of Azeroth as they level and reach the end game content." Not auto adding new characters to your guild, but "identifying and inviting to the guild".

To recap, if you or your guild really wants to help the lowbies or the inexperienced on the server, by all means, go ahead and do so. You wont be missing out on much, but you can make all of the difference to the poor little low levels that are lost in the confusion of the game(and many of it's peoples, i might add).

This is such a great idea. I hope this comes along soon on Sargeras.

I just came back yesterday. My guild crumbled and none of my friends really play. I'd really like to get back into the swing of things and this seems like a good solution.

you guys are missing the point.

This "program" will be only for guild that WANT to help newbies, that probally already help others without any kind of rewards

the lack of rewards on this system will back off raiding/leving guild that are not willing to pass 4 months straigh helping newbies, and only guilds that are willing, or that already help newbies to apply

is a great solution

@Gruvnik: Please provide a credible source about how many expansions are left. As far as I know most companies don't close down their best product on a whim, unless you're Coca-Cola and we know how well that went.

Secondly spending money for the sake of spending money on other resources isn't very useful. There has to be a reason and plan and actual use of that money.

great idea, except for the guilds on a server you didnt pick. What if we want to participate? Why not include us for a chance to be apart of this program, only cause we arent on a pre-selected realm?

@Frígídímpuls: It's probably part of a plan to beef up population on the lower pop servers. Those on full realms that are already seeing wait times, really don't want to see queue times extended. (or become an issue on servers where there currently are none)

@Silveressa: My server is low pop to, and it still doesnt make sense, its a forum/in-game assist system, that should be open to all guilds.

If you really want to do this and have it work take to benefit the players and the community take what Eve Online has done and put your own spin on it.

1. Every character starts off in a guild. The players have options at the character creation screen based on his or her faction. Switching schools once as a special privilege possibly as new players find out what they want to do. NPC is gm like in Eve.

2. There are about a dozen schools per faction. These are cross realm wide to connect new players to one another where they can learn together. Player volunteer CMs answering questions 24/7.

Thralls Dragonslayer Academy <TDA>(Pve Starter Guild),
Sylvannas Kingslayer Institute <SKI>(Pve Starter Guild),
Grommash Blade Academy <GBA> (Pvp Starter Guild),
Cairne Military School <CMS> (Pvp Starter Guild),
Commerce Exchange (AH / Professions),
Dalaran Institute for the gifted (RP).

You get the idea now so come up with better names, stop dividing players and don't relay on a few guild across 246 servers. Don't tell me you can't do it, if Eve Online can do it lets one up them by doing it with our with our larger community.

Remember only new toons can join these guilds, players once joining a player run guild can never enter a starter guild again.

This is probably a live test for something more permanent and wide spread that will take place after the 4 month trial has ended and feedback/changes are taken care of.

Still I fail to see the point; there's enough "help the newbie" style guilds out there dedicated ones serve no real purpose the other ones don't already.

Beyond that, I have serious doubts any guild is going to have the patience to deal with a flood of new players for 4 months straight, especially when the novelty of "helping the newcomers" wears off and guildmates get tired of putting their play/leveling on hold to help.

Further thought: How many guild members are going to be thrilled about their Guild Master volunteering their guild for this?

At the very least I hope they give the guilds a separate "noob channel" for the new recruits to post questions in rather then spam the guild chat with it all.

Otherwise, after a few weeks of constant new gamer questions, those that weren't keen on the concept are probably going to be either muting Guild Chat to stem the tide of newbie questions, or looking for a new guild.

@Silveressa: The whole point in making this guilds is to help newbies, yes, if a guild aplly for this They are willing to help newbies for the time beings, and i am sure they will do

the lack of rewards will push leving/raiding gears away from this program, with make only ppl that ENJOY helping others to participate on this, is a great way to help newbies.

i got lucky that i had a helpfull guild on the first time i played the game, and i help newbies on guild channel everytime i see someone with some kind of problem, that i can resolve, if you are not willing on helping newbies for 4 months straight, dont apply, is that simple

@Silveressa: I would like to think there are plenty of guilds out there much like the one I am in - we are all fairly close to our GM and he'd bring this up for a guild discussion. Also, I think it's entirely possible to do both - continue your own play while helping others. My guild does a mild form of this already. I'm just sad that my realm won't be paticipating.

Also, it's not uncommon to see /ignore on guildies.... :P

Questions:

Why only the selected realms?

Why do the participating guilds need to change their names? What would they be changing them to?

Why does only one guild per faction/realm get this opportunity? What happens if that guild falls apart? (I feel like only having one guild per realm could create an undesirable scenario; having the guild tag of the mentoring guild could put a target on players' backs in LFD/PVP/trade channel/etc.

What is the purpose of this program? So many guilds already exist to show new players the ropes.

Why is MVP status on the forums a reward? The guild leader may never post on the forums... however, he/ she now holds lots of power on the forums if he/she chooses to post.

@Tuttle: This may be an idea that was intended to be implemented in MoP but the team in charge was able to push the program forward faster than expected.

Not everyone at Blizzard is working on MoP you know.
