Introducing the Guild Mentoring Program

Introducing the Guild Mentoring Program

Azeroth -- It’s a land of turmoil, harsh and unyielding for heroes of the Horde and the Alliance as they struggle against enemies from within and without. For those stepping forth for the first time into this implacable realm, life can seem overwhelming, but surviving in this hostile environment is not insurmountable with a little help. Will your band of brothers and sisters, heroes and mentors, heed your call for aid?

Azeroth needs more heroes to rise through the ranks and your guild can help. We’re looking for a few good guilds to volunteer for the new Guild Mentoring Program. Guilds participating in the program will take part in identifying new players within selected realms, offering to invite them into the guild, and teaching them the ways of Azeroth as they level and reach the end game content.

F.A.Q.

Q. What is the Guild Mentoring Program?
A. The guild mentoring program identifies guilds on select realms to act as mentors for new and low level players (below level 85).

Q. How long does the Guild Mentoring Program run for?
A.
The Guild Mentoring Program will run for a period of four months from the time that guilds are selected and notified.

Q. Is there a certain criteria for being selected as a mentoring guild?
A.
Guilds must meet certain criteria to be considered for the Guild Mentoring Program:

  • Guilds must be located on one of the selected realms.
  • They must be willing to commit to the program for a four month period.
  • They must be willing to change their name for the four month Guild Mentoring participation period. (Names will be changed back at the end of the program.)
  • Guilds must be at least level 6 and have an active membership.

Q. How many guilds will be recruiting per realm?
A.
Only one guild will be selected per faction on each realm.

Q. What does my guild need to do to volunteer?
A.
The guild leader will need to submit an application to wowguilds@blizzard.com with the following information:

  • Current guild name and guild leader name
  • Current realm and faction of the applying guild
  • Current guild level and number of guild members
  • Guild leader’s real name and phone number (this information will not be published and is for internal use only)
  • Brief description of the Mentoring Guild

Q. How long are you accepting applications for?
A.
We will be accepting applications for two weeks. We will then select a guild for the Guild Mentoring Program from those that meet the criteria and contact the guild leader.

Q. On what realms will this program be available?
A.
Mentoring guilds will be chosen for the following realms:

Q. Do participating guilds get anything special?
A.
Some of the benefits for taking part in the program include:

  • MVP status on the forums for the guild leader and recruitment officer
  • Guild member private forum access
  • Recognition for your guild as being participants in the program

I agree, I think that realm list is pretty short. My guild is on Lothar and we were just made a new player server and 70% of our membership now is new players. We are teaching people how to play this game everyday already. I personally make sure to run a dungeon with each new player to help them learn how it works. We were doing daily runs through Deadmines. I would be glad to volunteer my guild but they aren't doing it on Lothar. We already have 5 people who have leveled from 1 to their low 80s and another 3 in their 60s. We do also have some young boys that are learning the game and helping them learn some of the social etiquette of the game as well. :-) This is just how our guild operates. We like to teach people to play the game so they can be good players at max level. We aren't getting any special incentive to do it. So why pick out guilds on these servers when there are probably a lot of guilds that already do this?

"Will you give me some gold?" "Can you run me through this place?" "Can you buy this from AH for me?" "Can I have some gold?" "Can you craft me these items for free?" "Can I have some gold?" as a wise man once said, "You are not prepared!"

This is a tad silly...This isn't a new thing either, FFXI did this years and years ago, except it was player mentoring (which to me makes way more sense, then employing an entire guild's time/energy to "mentor" what may be only a select few of people). Why can't they just have player mentoring, people to volunteer there time to answer questions/help new players out when asked?

I find this very oddly disappointing. if you were going to do this sort of thing, wouldn't it be appropriate to do it on all realms, considering that all realms have new players joining wow at least every month. I know Hyjal and Fizzcrank should have this on their realm along with a lot of other realms not listed on here. And my question is, how would you know if these so called mentoring guilds are actually doing the mentoring and not ignoring the members like so many guilds have been doing?

@Holyçôw: I'm assuming that since this program is to help the newbies at getting into the jive of things they'll just put them in the New players realms. Since that's where the new players should be going anyways.

@Iportyou: why should they go to the "new players" server? pop sucks, economy sucks..cant get anything off the ah..they are better off going to a med/high pop server, so they can get into a good guild, and receive better help from guildies...

"Recognition for your guild as being participants in the program" Blizzard doesn't do !@#$ for its community compared to other games. Millions of people pay 15$ a month for this game and that's the best they have? I'm really hoping the next gen "Blizzard" company is soon to arrive maybe they'll give a %^-* about the people that play the game.

@Hashball: if you disagree with blizz stop playing. NO one can beat Blizz in this time. They set a bar too high to keep up with, Star wars, Guild Wars, Rift... what happen to those games? there are many others out there, but they all suck, so go find one and leave this great gaming company alone.

@Fathermon: Rift gives as much content in a patch that wow gives in an expansion. and that is hasball's point. Yes blizzard is a great company for gamers, but they do lack in certain areas.

@Fathermon: Windwake is correct here, why do you think WOW is loosing subscribers non stop and things like rift are slowly getting more and more players.

Blizz needs to realize that they are what GMC used to be in the car market. Yah they are the biggest now but if they don't keep up with the competition and give people the best product they will just be begging for money to keep going like GMC had to.

Alot of guilds these days have a mass guild invite where they pull a bunch of people in, but then what? they don't do anything, say anything. I've been invited to guilds as low lvl toons where there are 900 members and yet i'm the only one on at times. the most i've seen is about 10-14 of them.
The real question is 'why now?' Guilds are to recruit new players and teach them all about the game, then when MoP hits and everything is changed, they will just have to learn it all over again like the rest of us anyway.
Also, I let my kids play on a trial account and they do just fine enjoying the game. I do this so that they don't have to worry about guilds recruiting randomly. My 4 yr old leveled a gnome warlock to lvl 10 with just a Shadowbolt spell. It's not that hard now, and it's getting easier every time they change it.

@Faiëlla: Your 4 year old leveled a lock to 10 with just shadowbolt. Okay, some people might say, bad parenting to let a kid play this game that young but I find that to be the most adorable thing I've ever heard of with this game. I would love to have seen that child level a toon like that. I really hope your child grows up well because so far, he/she is a genius!

@Alinus: Considering my 4 year old wants to sit in my wife's lap and be the button guy, i.e. push the button for the spells I about laughed after reading that part. Of course my 4 year old also knew how to start the dvd player by when he was 3. Note to parents do not let kids stay around grandparents for too long. =/

As far as the program, I see the pros and cons of it but in today's World of Warcraft I don't think it will work out.

I know of several guilds that already do this type of thing (take new players in and teach them the ropes and help them enjoy the game) but they are not on the servers listed. Would Blizzard consider expanding the servers for this program?

See I think thats the problem in general. We've become so conditioned to only doing something for a reward. I remember the days of WoW when logging in was fun every time, whether there was a raid or not. Get back to the community aspect and the fun of the game, instead of being so concerned with getting rewarded.

I think that this is a fantastic idea. Although I have been playing since launch, I still remember the days when I knew nothing about the game. Since it was still fresh, a few folks helped me learn the ropes because we were all learning together. I've had a very successful raiding experience since that point, and try my best to return the favor as often as I can, without any reward. Hopefully this will inspire more seasoned raiders to come forward as a group and help out some newer players, who know never know, could become the top of their respective class one day. Everyone starts at the bottom, but just like our every day lives, sometimes you need a little help to get things going.

@Experea: Is that what you told your English teacher?

I for one support it, being a guild leader myself that also does help new comers, from level 1 - 85.

I.E. Help them with quests, aid them in how to do it, and teach them how to do things on their own, so that when they ask a question, it's because they really can't do it. I basically have 1 of every class at level 85 besides my level 80 pally, and my non existent DK that I'll be making soon. Myself, my raiders, and officers, we teach them everything we can once they hit level 85. Making it that much easier to get to raiding / PvP'ing. I support the program! ^_^

I fail to see how this hurts any of you complainers game play? If you are already in an established guild and raiding happily, how does this affect you at all? It doesn't, so stop crying about something, go out and get you some sunlight for about 5-10 minutes, and stop being so ANTI life.

So let me get this straight, blizz wants guilds to mentor noobs and get them to end game so that these said noobs continue to play and enjoy the game and give blizz their money, but all blizz is giving the guilds for doing this ridiculous task is mvp status to 2 people and a private forum? Give me a break. Sounds like slavery to me, sell my game for nothing.

its sad that blizzard needs to unf**k the mess they made . mass recruitment is not what guilds were meant for. you got all these guilds with 1000 people in them an hardly anyone knows each other.

What Blizzard SHOULD do is not give reasons like guild perks to mass recruit. they need to make it not about the number of people in the guild but more about progression.

Im GM of a guild myself and would take my few guildies over a fustercluck of randoms anyday.

I would say make the new guys learn like we did, but with all the major changes that has taken place since the days of Molten Core 40 mans...it's a lot for someone to take in at once. The chances of finding a established guild willing to help out are slim to none. Smart idea on blizzards part to help the new guys from getting overwhelmed and stop playing, to keeping them paying
