Introducing the Guild Mentoring Program

Introducing the Guild Mentoring Program

Azeroth -- It’s a land of turmoil, harsh and unyielding for heroes of the Horde and the Alliance as they struggle against enemies from within and without. For those stepping forth for the first time into this implacable realm, life can seem overwhelming, but surviving in this hostile environment is not insurmountable with a little help. Will your band of brothers and sisters, heroes and mentors, heed your call for aid?

Azeroth needs more heroes to rise through the ranks and your guild can help. We’re looking for a few good guilds to volunteer for the new Guild Mentoring Program. Guilds participating in the program will take part in identifying new players within selected realms, offering to invite them into the guild, and teaching them the ways of Azeroth as they level and reach the end game content.

F.A.Q.

Q. What is the Guild Mentoring Program?
A. The guild mentoring program identifies guilds on select realms to act as mentors for new and low level players (below level 85).

Q. How long does the Guild Mentoring Program run for?
A.
The Guild Mentoring Program will run for a period of four months from the time that guilds are selected and notified.

Q. Is there a certain criteria for being selected as a mentoring guild?
A.
Guilds must meet certain criteria to be considered for the Guild Mentoring Program:

  • Guilds must be located on one of the selected realms.
  • They must be willing to commit to the program for a four month period.
  • They must be willing to change their name for the four month Guild Mentoring participation period. (Names will be changed back at the end of the program.)
  • Guilds must be at least level 6 and have an active membership.

Q. How many guilds will be recruiting per realm?
A.
Only one guild will be selected per faction on each realm.

Q. What does my guild need to do to volunteer?
A.
The guild leader will need to submit an application to wowguilds@blizzard.com with the following information:

  • Current guild name and guild leader name
  • Current realm and faction of the applying guild
  • Current guild level and number of guild members
  • Guild leader’s real name and phone number (this information will not be published and is for internal use only)
  • Brief description of the Mentoring Guild

Q. How long are you accepting applications for?
A.
We will be accepting applications for two weeks. We will then select a guild for the Guild Mentoring Program from those that meet the criteria and contact the guild leader.

Q. On what realms will this program be available?
A.
Mentoring guilds will be chosen for the following realms:

Q. Do participating guilds get anything special?
A.
Some of the benefits for taking part in the program include:

  • MVP status on the forums for the guild leader and recruitment officer
  • Guild member private forum access
  • Recognition for your guild as being participants in the program

It's kind of funny to me that Blizz has to ask for volunteers to do what alot of guilds already do. C'mon guys haven't you ever taken a noob under your wing (So to speak)?

Agree with Eroicej. Stop complaining about every little thing, jeez. It's not a big deal and it doesn't affect you at all if you don't let it. It is an easy game, sure, but for people starting out they'll need some guidance and these guilds are kind enough to lend some. Shut up, stop complaining and play the friggin game.

Why is Blizzard doing this? Because they think it will encourage more players to stick around. A better question would be: why does it bother you so much? No one forces you to play with bad players. Do guild-only runs, problem solved. Or do you lack the ability to get enough players together at the same time? In either case, the problem lies with you.

I agree with the dude below me. Seriously?! Is blizz really doing this? Why not start holding people's hands and playing the game for them?

So you say "mentoring" but you don't go into specifics at all.... What is the point of this? This is another summer challenge type thing? Where you group a couple words together, tell people about these useless words, give them no incentive to make use of this group of words, to top it all off, it doesn't change a damn thing. People will be doing what they do in their daily wow routine no matter how much you wanna make dumb phrases on the site. Nobody is so into fantasizing they don't need anything at all to give them motivation for something. Not sure exactly what the people will be doing but it will be funny to see 1 person from each of those guilds doing whatever that is.

Why not just add Mentoring in the game. This would allows higher lvl toons to mentor down to que in dungeons that are lower level, and help out lower level guildmates. This also gives characters that are level capped something to do besides raid or gear grind. Let us mentor down and que up for wailing caves or any instance thats lower lvl also do qsts that are grey or we missed and still be rewarded for them . Have are spells ect scale down and gear. This is already being done in rift and eq2. Cant be that hard to do when new games are adding it after only a little over a year. Same with instanced housing. MORE to do at END game. (It keeps players subbed so its a win win situation)..

@Faedom: wailing caverns* and i so totaly agree with you, but knowing the way bliz is they would not just scale down our spells/gear... they would give us a "set" of gear thats around what the average person has at the given level, same with the spells, so we wouldnt be able to use our rotations we are used to using....

@Faedom: Mentoring is great for the servers that have it but what does a player really learn when getting pulled through the instances...not too much...that is why scaling would be great.

Dear Bliz,

What a nice idea. I actually read some pretty interesting comments too, which made me think of something else.

You currently offer servers with:
1) PvE normal
2) PvP normal
and then with role playing variations.

What would be really really cool is if you had a "working player's" realm. In other words, for people like me who do NOT have many hours per day to play, but have to focus on maybe one weeknight and mostly weekends. It is sometime incredibly difficult to participate when the folks around you all have been doing raids all week, and farming rare mats and enchants, and you have just logged on after several days!

I know it would be difficult to monitor...but maybe a maximum number of hours per toon per week on that "working person's" server.

It would REALLY help us out. And allow us to participate in a meaninful way, instead of logging on and finding everyone geared to the hilt and getting kicked from LFR or even random dungeons.

What I liked in Beta by the way--was that many important/rare items seemed to be accessible after obtaining reputation (e.g. Pado Shan etc.). This is cool because, for example, the bracer enchants (+50) in Cata were such a rare drop that working people just didn't have any realistic access to them. It would have taken months of saving gold just to get ONE item enchanted!

So, nice job on the mentorship program, and I hope you'll consider what I am suggesting--we would not be taking away anything from anyone--and--it would allow us to keep playing at our own work/life/school pace. Otherwise, what I am more likely faced with is completely quitting until I have a more flexible period. And the restart can be a very difficult and time-consuming process. I think you'll keep more long-term subscriptions if a realm like that were available.

Thanks

Beta

@Betafeedback: I actually agree with this post and hope that more realm types are selected to assist newer players. If anything, Beta, you should be looking into the play hours of each guild you apply to, instead of just joining them on a whim. Some guilds hold different hours than others, no matter the realm type.

I do hope that other realm types are getting the option to be part of this guild mentoring system. I like the sound of it, and it could be quite fun for some of the guilds on my realm that want to better the realm reputation since the whole fiasco that Blizzard Blues caused for us. We're still fishing out trolls from behind our ears.

Congratulations making people do something that serves absolutely no purpose. There are already starter guilds on every server, unless its dead. Get out and meet people and join the guilds. This serves no purpose other than creating unnecessary paperwork headaches for someone who isnt even being paid by bliz to help them help their customers, which these guilds already do anyways. Most pointless idea ever?

@Pintzblade: I disagree with you there. For one, They are not -making- people do something, your guild volunteers for it. These guilds will be a positive thing, ensuring a new player who decides to join the guild a better road to understanding -and enjoying- the game. Nothings being forced on anyone. Starter guilds? I haven't even heard of them (and ive been playing for 5 years). Why would a new starting player know they exist? This gets the word out there. If You and others totally disagree with this, don't take part in it, please.

Dragons Templar does this on Gnomeregan Server already! We do it because that is who we are! We teach others for the fun of playing with each other! We do it because we want to do it not because we have too. We in Dragons Templar realize that everyone has to start somewhere. You don't get to 85 overnite and without some help along the way things can be very difficult. That is part of the fun - sharing and helping others to accomplish things. This is a social game after all!

i have played this game for a long time...
Leading groups in Arathi Basin since the game practically came out. i think i would be able to lead well. Never tried to make a guild before but i've seen all of the neglect and misuse of guild resources. In every guild there's that incrowd of people that are only allowed to take what they want. Personally i've never taken the time to kiss-!@# to try and get free stuff. EVERYTHING I HAVE I HAD TO GET MYSELF AND BY MYSELF.

i've put a load of thought into being able to do something like this. atleast taking the time to explain a fight in lower level dungeons really can change a community as a whole. and never leaving a LFR because the group wasnt good enough. I've missed out on every recent raid thats come out just because i didnt have the gear to go get the gear. thank blizz for the new justice/valor vendors. i would have just pvped for the rest of my life.

Just a shame that its not on more realms, but alas i am broke and cannot transfer a single character over just to be eligible lol

i could do this...and i could put the time in to make sure that it was done right. it would be more then an honor for me to take part in something like this. Not just for me to teach others...but for me to learn as well!

I love this idea, it's this sort of player involvement that made me create a guild of my own. My officers and guildies help each other with gameplay, spec advice, gear runs, materials and farming. Anything you need you can find a guild member who will help you with it.

I wish this program was available on The Scryers, we could use the boost, being a PVE/PVP server listed as RP makes it hard to attract more serious players wanting end game content.

Good job Blizzard!

What you are advocating in this article is for guild leaders to lead a "leveling guild". Leveling guilds are looked down on and shunned by most experienced players, especially elitists. Being called a "leveling guild" is pretty much the kiss of death for your guild. Everyone joins, uses you and your guild to help level their character and then quit the guild as soon as they hit max level. While I do like helping my guild members in SWTOR, you could not pay me enough to do this in wow.

All of you hating on this idea is kinda sad. Just because you never got help when you first started or always use to being spoiled all the time dont like it, doesnt mean that others shouldnt get help. For those who ACTUALLY worked to get to where they are, usually arnt rude and stuck up. I love this idea that bliz is trying to help out new players. Sure, you can learn the game as you go along..but some help would be nice, or even a friendly gester. Wish it was on Llane though hehe. :)

well i agree with this idea. i only play casually nopw as i have a hectic work life but i use to play heaps back in the day, but what im getting at is i have trouble getting into cata raids cause people with no life take the game so seriously that if you make one mistake all verbal abusing hell brakes loose over chat. i think its wrong and i agree with the comments saying if guilds take the time to help and teach people the ropes without always saying watching fatboss clips then players would be better, dont people realise there are players out there that learn quicker if there thrown in the deep end and make mistakes then trying to rember a bloody 30min-1hour vid on Dragon soul. I say thumbs up to this mentoring program. And yes before people say anything i go into raids geared.
