Professions: Living in Perfect Harmony

Professions: Living in Perfect Harmony

As with any new expansion, we often find that we have an opportunity to take a closer look at a variety of game systems within World of Warcraft and explore new ideas or improvements to the game. One system in particular is held near and dear to the hearts of the community: professions. With Mists of Pandaria, the designers were able to seize upon an opportunity to look at the role of materials and refine their purpose and their usefulness. In the end, they came up with Spirit of Harmony as the new resource du jour.

Harmonious Prospects

In Mists of Pandaria, we’re introducing a new material known as the Spirit of Harmony. It slices— it dices— well, ok, it doesn’t, but crafters of any stripe will find it has many uses. By now, any experienced crafter is used to filling bags with a variety of materials such as Primal Life, Primal Fire, Primal Earth, etc. but in Mists of Pandaria, it’s all about Spirit of Harmony (in combination with the usual materials, like ore, leather, and gems). Spirit of Harmony is the result of the designers simplifying an already complex system while still keeping a wide variety of possibilities open to players. Much like with other Primals, Motes of Harmony can be combined (10 to 1) to create one Spirit of Harmony.

Harmony is Personal

Let’s get right to it. Spirit of Harmony is a Bind on Pickup (or “BoP” to veterans) crafting material that can be found on every lootable creature in every zone in Pandaria -- from dungeons to the outdoor world. Initially, we want crafters to be out in the world adventuring instead of camping out in front of an auctioneer, hoping to score some cheap mats.

We understand that this may be of concern to those who play a variety of profession alts, and may consider other options for the future, including the possibility of allowing Spirits of Harmony to be Bind to Account in a future patch.

In addition to serving as a core crafting ingredient, Spirits of Harmony can also be used to purchase a variety of additional bonuses or materials that your character may need. While not every profession will get equal value out of them, most everyone will need to collect them for one reason or another.

Here are some examples of the many ways that Spirit of Harmony can be used:

Alchemy: Purchase an extra Transmute.
Archaeology: Purchase a restored artifact.
Cooking: Exchange for an Iron Paw Token.
Enchanting: Buy reagents.
Engineering: New mounts and personal goggles.
Herbalism: Purchase herbs.
Inscription: Purchase rare inks.
Jewelcrafting: Use to purchase extra daily discoveries.
Tailoring, Blacksmithing, Leatherworking: Used to create epic items.

Purchasing materials may not ultimately be the most efficient way to gain resources, but it can be an added convenience to purchase something with Spirit of Harmony rather than going back into the world to get it. The Spirit of Harmony vendor can be found in the Vale of Eternal Blossoms.

@Slightlylost: Legion here. I have a priest (this one actually) and my main spec is disc so I'm not saying any of this out of context. I understand that LFG/DF grps are mostly idiots, but when it comes down to it farming is farming, which basically boils down to "I have to spend time doing something while I could be doing something else that's actually enjoyable."

For the love of god at least let it stack to 200 for space and allow it to be BoA.

I would expect the mote of harmony being BoA or unbound late into the expac much like frozen orbs and chaos orbs were. Around endgame is when other mats which are raider only are being introduced (living embers etc).
I strongly believe that a soulbound crafting mat is a good idea, but I also see the need to unbind it as it becomes less relevant toward the end of an expac. Expect it to be unbound or BoA some time around the second set of non launch raid content.

BoP is a Bad Idea(TM). I understand why they want to do it, but I feel the negatives outweigh the positives.

Negatives:
- Consider the seriously faction unbalanced pvp realms. It won't "promote world pvp", it'll add additional disincentives to play the underdog because not only will you be outnumbered, but you'll also an even more broken economy and the knock-on effects of that.
- We are still stuck with two specs. It's bad enough already doing dailies on toons who are spec/geared as heal+tank. Running back to the trainers to respec before beginning a farming/grinding session for BoP items to remain competitive will get old fast.

Will I get out and grind on my three JC's? Yep. For tailoring/bs/lw? Hell no, just the grind for the jc's will be my limit.

@Slightlylost: Oops. To add to that, I hate the idea of BoP, but don't mind BoA. If I have to farm, I would prefer to farm on a toon that's geared/specced for it.

@Slightlylost: Maybe I'm not understanding correctly, but to me all this seems to be an extreme case of preferences. Everyone knows when they create a toon on a PvP realm that they are gonna have to deal with getting ganked at one point or another. If you don't want to deal with that then don't make a toon that can't handle it, go to a PvE realm or just run the instances. EASY

The idea of just one mat is great, but BOP is terrible. A great number of players have just crafting professions on their main, now what? Just have to wait, like every !@#$ing expansion u came with a terrible new idea and change later.

@Bashyourass: I guess in your situation (and I have one or two alts who only gather) the SoH is just non-applicable. You will still be able to sell your mats as usual. This new method may diminish demand for your goods, but that may elevate the profit. Time will tell.

A cash bonus for the SoH would be nice for those who just gather.

@Ouroborous: i agree with you there, i have 4 alts with maxed prof, i have them all covered. my problem lies with this being my main since i leveled him,and i plan to level him first in pandaria. the point im making is, that if this item is not BoA then i will be getting a lot of them as i grind through panadria to 90, and they will be collecting dust in my bank. i feel it defeats the purpose of getting them; if i cannot gain any benefits from them. on a second note, i will have to (for instance my pally has inscription and JC) drop one of my professions to get enough to cap out my skills, or spend extra time away from my main to grind mobs for the drops to lvl my professions.

I'm happy with the change, although I feel like it might take a little bit of the variety out of items. I really do, on the other hand, love the fact that we won't have to keep up with 6 different varieties any longer.

Of course, as everyone is saying, they should just be BoA from the get-go. You already mentioned it as an issue you've foreseen, so just take care of it right now and be done with it. Leave it a blue quality item, but please, PLEASE make it Bind on Account.

I'll have to look again but if I remember right, there are VERY few things in my 600 tailoring that take Spirits of Harmony to make. They even took them out of Imperial Silk. The information in the article, for Tailoring in this beta build at least, is incorrect. None of the epic recipes take Spirits to craft.

Assuming I'm not forgetting something crucial that requires Spirits of Harmony to craft, my Tailor main will use her spirits to buy enchanting mats or mats for my alts' professions, because while the Spirits themselves are BoP when you create them, the Golden Lotus herbs or Ghost Iron ore you buy with them are not, and there's a mailbox right over there.

@Tamakhana: I'll put it another way, i put my "work" in on level 18 level 85s because i like the leveling process, i don't mind farming but i DEFINITELY mind farming on 18 different toons. Implying that people are lazy because they don't want to farm on toons that are otherwise retired or they are bored of is hypocritical if people don't mind farming on thier chosen toons, thats why most people here want it BOA. It's a game, not work and should be treated as a game, treating it as work will only turn folks off and make them lose even more subs.

@Arkidan: But if you make things too easy on people it makes the game pointless. To me this game gives you something that you feel good about when you have to "work" a little to get. It's the same principle as farming instances or raids for gear. If they make everything BoA right away they might as well hand you gear and gold. If you don't want to farm on 18 toons you shouldn't have lvl'd 18 toons tbh. Stick with the few that you like the most and rotate between or something when you get bored. Don't expect Blizz to hand you things just cuz you have a bunch of toons.

@Legión: I have a bit of a problem with being told i should'nt level toons because as i said before its part of what i enjoy about the game. Your argument is false because i already (and other folks here) have stated we don't mind farming or working to get the mat, we mind being forced to do it on every single toon. What your suggesting is not working just to get the mat, its working to gear every toon (which is a whole order of magnitude) more then a "little work". Farming raids for gear or heroics is also a totally different issue since your ability to "farm" them is limited by lockouts. I don't expect them to force me to abandon time already spent on these toons and investment in them because they decide to throw a wrench in the system to force me out into the real world when i have no problem with being thier on the toon i want to play.

@Tamakhana: The time i put in to farm for it on one toon should be sufficient other then forceing me to farm for gear and then mats on seperate toons. And no i don't want the money for the time as i have already put in the time to level the toons but only want to farm on a few of them. As for the argument that harder things to craft sell for more thats somewhat of a falsehood because your spending more time to make each item so the cost/profit margin will be roughly equal whether its fostered over large or small quantities of items the only difference is how much of a time sink it is over those 1 or 100 items made/sold (think about it). As for farming the item, they would be smart to make it BOA becuase folks that have money will make the money one way or the other, for instance if the items you make are BOE and there is a strong market for them, i would probably (litereally since your on my server) let you farm/make them and then mark up the items and never step outside SW at all to farm anything, i can just buy and resell items at will and play in between the cracks of the AH (market manipulation is maximum in thin markets, just look at the cost of mounts on our server, how do you think there are mounts for 750k on the AH?).

After reading a lot of the comments, i agree that SoH should be BoA, but i'm totally ok with it being BoP at first. For the first few weeks, any toon that will need them, you'll be playing on. Maybe after a month or so make them BoA to allow people that have toons they enjoy playing more than other, the ability to do dailies and other things farming the SoH and having fun, while being able to mail them to their alts.

I only have two 85's currently, when i get my 3rd, i probably won't play him as much as my Mage or Druid, cause they are alot of fun, Druid is crazy fun for running around and farming stuff when i'm in the mood. I won't wanna farm mats on my hunter tho..

Players who have ever taken an economics course will like the BoP status of the items. The difference between BoP and unbound when it comes to the price of made items is much like the difference between WholeFoods and Walmart: Everything you buy in both places is the same crap with different labels, the difference is price vs volume. Wholefoods sells fewer groceries at higher prices while Walmart sells more at lower prices. BoE crafted items are too numerous and too easy to make, by increasing the trouble one must go through to craft an item, Bliz ensures a higher AH price for the item. So stop whining and see the benefit from such a system as BoP mats.
