Professions: Living in Perfect Harmony

Professions: Living in Perfect Harmony

As with any new expansion, we often find that we have an opportunity to take a closer look at a variety of game systems within World of Warcraft and explore new ideas or improvements to the game. One system in particular is held near and dear to the hearts of the community: professions. With Mists of Pandaria, the designers were able to seize upon an opportunity to look at the role of materials and refine their purpose and their usefulness. In the end, they came up with Spirit of Harmony as the new resource du jour.

Harmonious Prospects

In Mists of Pandaria, we’re introducing a new material known as the Spirit of Harmony. It slices— it dices— well, ok, it doesn’t, but crafters of any stripe will find it has many uses. By now, any experienced crafter is used to filling bags with a variety of materials such as Primal Life, Primal Fire, Primal Earth, etc. but in Mists of Pandaria, it’s all about Spirit of Harmony (in combination with the usual materials, like ore, leather, and gems). Spirit of Harmony is the result of the designers simplifying an already complex system while still keeping a wide variety of possibilities open to players. Much like with other Primals, Motes of Harmony can be combined (10 to 1) to create one Spirit of Harmony.

Harmony is Personal

Let’s get right to it. Spirit of Harmony is a Bind on Pickup (or “BoP” to veterans) crafting material that can be found on every lootable creature in every zone in Pandaria -- from dungeons to the outdoor world. Initially, we want crafters to be out in the world adventuring instead of camping out in front of an auctioneer, hoping to score some cheap mats.

We understand that this may be of concern to those who play a variety of profession alts, and may consider other options for the future, including the possibility of allowing Spirits of Harmony to be Bind to Account in a future patch.

In addition to serving as a core crafting ingredient, Spirits of Harmony can also be used to purchase a variety of additional bonuses or materials that your character may need. While not every profession will get equal value out of them, most everyone will need to collect them for one reason or another.

Here are some examples of the many ways that Spirit of Harmony can be used:

Alchemy: Purchase an extra Transmute.
Archaeology: Purchase a restored artifact.
Cooking: Exchange for an Iron Paw Token.
Enchanting: Buy reagents.
Engineering: New mounts and personal goggles.
Herbalism: Purchase herbs.
Inscription: Purchase rare inks.
Jewelcrafting: Use to purchase extra daily discoveries.
Tailoring, Blacksmithing, Leatherworking: Used to create epic items.

Purchasing materials may not ultimately be the most efficient way to gain resources, but it can be an added convenience to purchase something with Spirit of Harmony rather than going back into the world to get it. The Spirit of Harmony vendor can be found in the Vale of Eternal Blossoms.

I think SoH should be BoA. Is kinda boring needing to farm with all your prof-toons just to get this.

I'm mad i can't farm these and sell them for ridiculous prices on the AH. TT

Please make these BoA. I would much rather get my druid and shaman to 90 first, not feel like I have to level all my toons with different profs at the same. Not being able to send my alts the SoH I have is a huge pain.

@Cyntessa: I am also hoping for the BoA, when cata came out it was a pain having to run a dungeon on all my toons that needed the orbs just to lvl thier professions.

BOP is tradable to party members...BOA is not. there for this could still be farmed in a sense. i can see it now in trade chat: LFM SoH runs , paying 300g per soh. BOA is the best solution IMO

@Academy: BoP is only tradeable to party members if its rollable loot. If done like cloth or any other type of item where its lootable only by whoever's mob loot it is then wont matter much if it's BoA or BoP since it wouldn't be rolled in the first place

you guys are just up in arms because you cant farm the !@#$ outta these and sell them for a ridiculously high mark up (gouging) in the first month. shut up. let crafters make their stuff. everyone is going to be making so much money in the beginning of mists anyways. how about concentrating more on things like deciding who goes and does world bosses? how many will you take? what will be the split between pvp players and pve players?

Don't see why everyone is at arms over the Motes being BoP. unless you never, ever loot, you should have plenty of them for when you go to craft whatever it is you are aiming to create. Hell, give it a few weeks and you won't ever have to really worry about whether you you will have enough to make something.

And to boot, with Blizzard's new mass area looting system, you can go do a quest and kill your half dozen or so mobs in an area, loot one body, and you're done with several motes in your bags.

@Pheoikari: The motes don't drop that often, I wish they did. If you could get multiple motes after killing half a dozen mobs it wouldn't be so bad. I'm lucky if I have close to one SoH after completing a quest hub.

Whats wrong with buying the of the AH theres a difference between exploring the world and farming, when you farm your in a specific area doing the same thing over and over again, your not really exploring, your just killing mobs over and over again in this case.

@Frostyrecks: shut up mister 3 lives. you are clearly just mad you cant farm them and add more gold to your gluttonous gold pile already. either that or you must be a chinese gold farmer agent. for those of you who dont know, every expansion, players on all realms are contacted by the gold farmers encouraging them to (instead of progression) to farm all the mats they can so the gold farmers can purchase the gold from them with real money at a discounted price in order to sell the gold to the public at large. friends of mine who shall remain nameless- but who also do not even bother with this game anymore used to get emails in BC and Wrath (yes, they bought chinese gold) asking them to do this at the start of the expansion. they didnt bother to play in cata. dont know if they got the letters for cata. either way, i like it. it feels good. these items are simply not worth the crazy amount of gold people would charge you for them.

I like this idea. Its at the very least an attempt at trying to regulate auction house abuse and gold farming that was so rampant in WoLK and Cata. BoA would be much better IMO simply for the sake of not having a ton of these spirits on an alt without a profession go to waste along with leveling professions on other toons. The only people who would be hurt by having these bind is people looking to profit. Craftables will be more expensive, but I don't think anyone who took time to level a prof will mind a little farming for more profit.

@Holysteer: Agreed, BoA is the solution, not BoP. Leveling crafting on a series of alts is a huge time investment, and the reward is a crafting "ecosystem" that lets you pool your characters' skills and mats to best aid your progression. I don't even get what behavior they're trying to prevent by going BoP.

Whatever you decide is fine with me. I think we all need to try and seperate the rude from the nice and the non W.O.W. related from the W.O.W. related. Thank for making a great game. I hope players try to have more fun instead of harass each other or complain. World of Warcraft is Prominent in many ways. Although someplayers that make up the multitudes of this Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game may not even be role players at all but instead players who you may not enjoy playing with at all. That goes for both sides of the conflict of whatever it may be.

@Balevir: Suggestion mabye a Non-World of Warcraft Topic Chat Channel for all the players that like to harass each other and chat about non W.O.W. related topics to chat in to give and option of repotrting Non W.O.W. related topics in other channels and getting them off players chat channels that do not wish to hear about anything other than World of Warcraft related topics.

Okay good, I understand the need for new materials in assistane with the creation of items, but why can't Jewelcrafters get EPIC Ring and Necklace patterns or go the Blacksmithign way and make it so Jewelcrafters can make their Rings and Necklaces have an additional socket that uses Spirit of Harmony. Honestly, Jewelcrafters have been shafted since Wrath came out once the epic jewelry they made was replaced by raided gear all tehy were good for was gem cuts. Give us someting to work with besides ONE mount.

@Aryae: Maybe we'll be able to buy ores or bars with them as well? That or they might have some effect on the smelting process... All I know is that what they listed were "Some examples" of what Spirits of Harmony are for. Don't cry foul just yet. If you're that concerned, do what I'm doing and wait for the MoP reviews to come in.

From what I read here, it probably not be nearly as much of an issue as with the previous BOP mats. For them, you could only get them from bosses in heroic instances or raids. With the Spirit of Harmony (SoH), it has a chance of dropping from pretty much anything. Note this line as evidence of that: "Spirit of Harmony is a Bind on Pickup (or “BoP” to veterans) crafting material that can be found on every lootable creature in every zone in Pandaria -- from dungeons to the outdoor world." As such, the motes should be relatively common, and you should not need to run a bunch of instances or raids to get what you need. Kill a bunch of stuff, probably. But you choose where to go harvesting.

I think this idea is bad. By making these bind on pickup you run into the same issues you had when you had primal nethers bop and Chaos Orbs as bop. This idea didn't work in the past.. and it certainly won't work now. Not to mention you shut out maxing out professions on your profession alt. It's a bad idea so rethink this one.
