Can I choose to not have my money go to the Red Cross? I'm utterly sick and tired of hearing about the whining from the eastern seaboard about Sandy. You live near the coast, hurricanes are a risk in that kind of area. Also, I refuse to support the Red Cross for various reasons.

@Tamalama: I'm not even from the US, my country rarely suffers from natural disasters and i still feel for the people who may have lost their homes or worst, their families. It's human to try to help others. Sorry but that leaves you like a selfish @$$0.

@Vindor: actually, it's not human at all to try to help others. that's a comfort of society and of living in a first world country.

@Slamin: It is human nature. In fact, many anthropologists believe that the reason humans were able to evolve to where they are now is because where most animals would allow the sick and the weak to the predators, early humans would actually defend and protect the weaker members.

And Tamalama, it is very rare for hurricanes to go anywhere near that far North.

I like how the wording has been changed to "Your support will enable the Red Cross to provide shelter, food, emotional support, and other assistance to survivors of disasters 'like' Superstorm Sandy"... Who knows when this kitty is really coming out! :P

what storm does anyone remember what this is for its only been a mth since they said this was coming out and it really wasn't that bad of a storm I live in FL and what happened in NY we would clean that up in a weekend its not like a hurricane trashed the place like they do here

@Shadytanks: You have to remember that the Northeast is not prepared for being hit by category 1 hurricanes like we are here in FL. The infrastructure is not designed for it, just like it isn't for a major earthquake. The landscape doesn't help, like New York Harbor, for example, where the land formation acts like a funnel, thus the storm surge coming further inland than it would in most places. You also need to take into consideration that Sandy wasn't your typical cat 1 hurricane. It is being called "Superstorm Sandy" because it was a combination of Sandy, a blast of Arctic air coming south, and an early winter storm coming from the west. There is also the fact that Sandy hit THE most densely populated area in the country. All those factors combined is what made Sandy so destructive. I was just reading an article earlier saying that the people living in the Rockaways on Staton Island STILL don't have electricity, heat, water, and in some cases, shelter. Mayor Michael Bloomberg, was there and had police raid a Occupy Sandy location who are doing everything to help the people in that area. The situation there is still critical. I hope this has made clear for you and anyone else who made have similar thoughts. Climate change is happening, and extreme weather like Sandy will become frequent, so please don't underestimate the power of Mother Nature, as this is her way of telling us how badly we are screwing things up.

@Shadytanks: shows how much u know, as part of an active unit that went out to help out with the relief in new york; went cleared over 200 tons while we was there including homes that were destroyed all along the coastline, so you should watch what you say on things that you don't know

@Dreakonn: o and that is as bad as half our state being wiped out a few yrs ago by 2 hurricanes in a row both cat 3 or higher so I know better then u do about storms and I lived here right on the coast of FL 5mins from the gulf of mexico for almost 30yrs so Ive seen more storms then you

@Shadytanks: so you living in florida and seeing storms all the time makes what me and my family and friends have dealt with less significant than sandy? as Ayshah said the northeast is not prepared for this but you are obviously alive and have internet and electricity and live in a state where if it drops to 50 degrees thats winter for you, try living up here in freezing temperatures, snow freezing rain and not have heat or hot water or electricity and watching people die by the day, babies and small children it is a sad crisis but in no way is the fact you have lived through a bunch of storms make this any less severe, you are an insensitive jerk and need to show a little compassion to those who really need it
