World of Warcraft: Dawn of the Aspects - Part 1 Coming Soon

World of Warcraft: Dawn of the Aspects - Part 1 Coming Soon

The age of the dragons is over. Azeroth’s ancient guardians struggle to find new purpose in a world plagued by uncertainty. Author Richard A. Knaak explores the history of the Dragon Aspects in this five part mini-series, which takes place at a moment in time before they’d been granted their powers, when they were called upon to band together against the proto-dragon Galakrond.

Kalecgos, youngest of the former Dragon Aspects, has been hit especially hard by the changes brought about by the death of Deathwing. Having lost his great powers, how can he—or any of his kind—still make a difference in the world?

The answer lies in the distant past, when savage beasts called proto-dragons ruled the skies. Through a mysterious artifact found near the heart of Northrend, Kalecgos witnesses this violent era and the shocking history of the original Aspects: Alexstrasza, Ysera, Malygos, Neltharion, and Nozdormu.

In their most primitive forms, the future protectors of Azeroth must stand united against Galakrond, a bloodthirsty creature that threatens the existence of their race. But did these mere proto-dragons face such a horrific adversary alone, or did an outside force help them? Were they given the strength they would become legendary for . . . or did they earn it with blood? Kalecgos’s discoveries will change everything he knows about the events that led to the dawn of the Aspects.

Check out the teaser below for the first part of Dawn of Aspects which arrives on February, 19.

World of Warcraft: Dawn of the Aspects

Part I Excerpt

And then... a sound louder than thunder stilled not only the sisters, but every proto-dragon in the vicinity.

The sound erupted again, shaking the rocky ridges upon which Malygos and many of the other hunters perched. Several of the proto-dragons were cowed, and Kalec felt even Malygos fight not to prostrate himself.

Only then did Kalec realize that the incredible noise was a gigantic roar.

A vast region of the overcast sky broke away, descending with astonishing swiftness. The velocity caused the clouds to quickly scatter, revealing a sight that truly could daunt not only a proto-dragon, but even the most powerful of Kalec's own kind.

This was supposed to be a proto-dragon, but so immense was its size that not even a dragon could be chosen for an adequate comparison. Kalec could think of no creature save one that could be used… and that would have meant comparing Galakrond to himself.

Even though Kalec had never seen the gigantic Galakrond in the flesh, the remote possibility that he would not have recognized this titanic being had been eliminated by Galakrond's name racing over and over through Malygos's mind. In addition, through his host's brief glimpse away from the Father of Dragons to the other proto-dragons, Kalec saw that not one of the hunters remained in the sky. Galakrond now commanded the world above, and there was no proto-dragon foolish enough to challenge that rule.

He swooped down, passing over the entire region in a matter of seconds. In Galakrond's wake there came a vicious wind that even tore several proto-dragons from their roosts and sent more than one meal toppling to the ground far below. Galakrond's roar was no less ground-shaking miles away, forcing Malygos and the sisters to grip their perches tighter.

For such a colossal creature, Galakrond turned with remarkable agility. Once more, he passed over the now-panicking herd, but this time with intent. Galakrond seized up two caribou in each of his much larger hind paws and scooped up another whole in his gargantuan maw, then rose up. The grazer in his mouth vanished down his gullet and a moment later so did both of those in his left hind paw. By the time Galakrond leveled, all five of his catches were well on their way down to his stomach.

The Father of Dragons...Kalec could still not believe the stunning image.

But five was not enough. Galakrond veered back and lunged toward the scattering prey. This time, however, he suddenly pulled back. Confused at first, Kalec watched as the bending of the vast wings during the halt created a windstorm that sent dozens of beasts rolling uncontrollably.

Before several of the caribou could rise to their feet, Galakrond plucked them up. With at least eight claimed that Kalec could see, the Father of Dragons soared back into the clouds.

It was not until several seconds after Galakrond's departure that the first proto-dragons dared move. There was no renewal of the hunt; not only were the caribou scattered so far and wide that pursuit would have required too much effort, but most of the proto-dragons were still too shaken up by Galakrond's startling manifestation. Some took to the sky themselves and fled for calmer climes. Others remained subdued.

The Father of Dragons… Kalec could still not believe the stunning image. To witness Galakrond alive was something he could never have imagined.

The blue knew little of Galakrond save that he had been one of the largest beings to roam Azeroth and that he had represented the shift from proto-dragon to true dragon. It was not that Galakrond had actually fathered all true dragons—that was a myth somehow spread millennia ago—but that after him had come the five Aspects and their respective dragonflights. Proto-dragons had all but vanished after that.

There were other legends concerning Galakrond, but, in truth, Kalec understood that only his three counterparts knew the truth. He had never thought to ask them about the Father of Dragons, but now wished that he had.

Yet, Kalec's momentary awe soon gave way again to his anger and frustration—and growing concern—over his being trapped in these ancient visions. Each one seemed more and more lifelike, as if his own time were the fantasy and this scene now were the true present.

Not for the first time, he tried to will himself back, but nothing changed. He continued to be an insignificant, unnoticed phantasm trapped within Malygos. Not even Alexstrasza or Ysera—both of whom in the future would have abilities that should make them sense his presence—so much as glanced in curiosity at the male beside them.

I will be free! Kalec abruptly roared, though his roar went unheard by any save himself. Bereft of a throat—or a body—he felt like nothing but a memory remembered by no one.

Laughter filled his—or rather, Malygos's—ears. Kalec at first thought that someone mocked him, but instead, the laughter was aimed at the other proto-dragons by a charcoal-gray male a bit larger than most, who actually sneered at the others.

"Little hatchlings!" he bellowed. "Afraid of the sky! Afraid of the ground! Galakrond laughs at you for being afraid, and I, Neltharion, do, too!"

Some of the proto-dragons hissed at the gray male, but no one challenged him. By their glances, they knew him to be strong and able to back up his taunt. Even those proto-dragons who clearly had little more intelligence than their prey appeared to know better than to fight—

Neltharion? The name finally penetrated. Kalec sought in vain to seize control of Malygos's body as the newcomer, still laughing, flew off. Where Galakrond had been a startling, unsettling thing of legend, this gray male represented a danger to the future of all life on Azeroth. If there was a creature more evil than Neltharion, Kalec could not think of one.

Of course, by the blue's time, the gray male would be better known by his more apt title… Deathwing.

Yay, lore about Galakrond! this looks really interesting, and I think its going to hit on some of the lore aspects that have been left a little fuzzy by WoW cannon. according to the in-game books, the aspects were given their powers by the titans, although I don't think we hear anything about Galakrond's demise, what caused the titans to give the dragons their powers, or how they all separated out into distinct dragon flights. this is definitely a series I'll be looking out for.

and nope, I dont have a life...

@Jàkkal: So far from what i gathered from this little bit here, and to answer what you're assuming; Proto Dragon's were the first form of dragon's on azeroth. From what i just read it seems as if, Galakrond, gave the proto dragon's their current forms. However I see your point with the in game lore. I'm just going to assume that what i just said was true and somehow or another, the story will co-mingle the titans later giving the 'current' dragon's their powers, and then them separating their flights

@Jàkkal:
actually the titans made the dragon aspects to look after the world they shaped after sealing the old gods away. certain titans granted the aspect each a part of their abilities so the aspects could maintain azeroth. each dragon chosen by the titans and from the chosen aspect sprouted their individual flights.

Wow. Ummm .. I think I will be a wee bit differrent and post about the book. The book this post is supposed to be about.
I am looking forward to reading the series. THough if the series is going to be about the past of the dragons and how it affect them at present will there be things that will break current lore?

so out of curiosity howcome like 95 percent of the comments here arent about the books and are random mutterings about expansions? That question aside The excerpt itself looks interesting even if I'm still pissed about the aspects losing everything to stop deathwing. I'm actually looking forward to getting my hands on a copy. How about anyone else?

New Race at level 100 (expansion) would be cool: Horde = Solarians, Humans = Grays. Solarians would be descended from Lizards and be FAST, Cunning, and resistant to magic. Grays would be even more technically advanced than dwarves and be able to use New Magic abilities.Make both hero class's where, in order to create one, an account must have reached level 100 with at least one toon AND do a Legendary quest chain at level And either allow just one on a server (like the older hero class) or just one, period.

100 to turn on the Hero class.Just a thought.

@Poxs: Shoo with your bad ideas. "Grays"? Seriously, little grey spacemen.

And What you'r etalking about (is not a / are not) 'hero-classes'.

what you're talking about are 'races'.

it's an X-Files, and Acid induced bad idea, and in closing, the next expansion shouldn't breach lvl 95 lvl cap, and try gathering 'racial' ideas to things actually in the World of Warcraft Canon.

Pro Tip: Turalyon and Alleria haven't been seen in years.

If you ask me, Blizzard did a great job so far but yes the level 90 does look high but with little experience changes it is easy. But most people just want to make there guys look cool and have a little challenge once they reach the max level. Gear changes and looking to what we are liking will make it a never ending game so Blizzard could try asking players 5+ years of playing what they like along with the new blood joining. So if they look to what we like and put there own little spin on it they will have a game that no one can stop playing. In all they should just follow what they have been trying to do since it is a new expansion it was going to be bumpy on how we felt and they will change it to what the players like cause they have not let us down so far.

I personally think they can make two more expansion up to 100 at the most if i had to say anything to expansion it would be yeah make a emaerald and great dark expansion the Make emerald the 95 level and great dark 100 but they needto make one more race adn it should be for the final expansion and a hero race that u can only make one of i beileve they should make it the half elfs and make them the only race that cant use a class or something so they can fuse the class spec together cuase the half elfs have a unlimited poetinal like make one of it spec the arcane warrior a fusion of Arcane mage and a Arms Warrior for Dps the next being the the savagekin tank class being a fusion of Warden druid and Monk/Pally class and then the healer class i havent found a name for it yet but i think it should be fusion of Holy pally and Priest class to bring in some of the best heals just a few idea i had but for the final expansion i think they should allow us to battle Sageras the dark titan cuase most of the cuase of destruction in Warcraft is due to him Just afterthought there Might want to look into it Blizzard if u readthis

@Idria: God, I hope they do not. Just for the sake of your title for this ... *cough* straight face *cough* ... expansion. "World of Warcraft: Emerald"... "World of Warcraft: Great Dark"....

You have ideas, that's great. Stick to the material that's been around for I don't know... longer than Pokemon.

Take your ideas and make them conform to the content that's already written INTO Warcraft, and not yet canonized in the World of Warcraft.

Shoo, with your bad ideas.

Tip: Turalyon and Alleria haven't been seen in years.

What's your ideas on *That*.

"Unlimited Potential"... is another idea that doesn't conformed to "Balanced gameplay".

No reason to 'fuse specializations' together, they simplified the system enough.

If you're wanting functional ideas for classes, I recommend The Paragon of Roleplaying Mr. Gary Gygax' "Dungeon Master" guides and such, as Gygax is pretty much The Authority and a status quo.

He also wrote a bunch of 'Guides" addressing various things like creating dynamic worlds and even incorporating individual ideas INTO Existing ones, there are some liberties, however the advice contained in Gygax' manuals, guides, et al., are the guiding principals for most *every* RPG in existence, on the face of God's Green Earth.

Oh by the way, use the Warcraft(s) canon(s).

I think world of warcraft has pretty much went as far as it can.

I hate to say it but at level 90 it is pretty daunting for a new player to actually get to 90 and not be bored with the time it takes and the lack of choices you have with your abilities. It is pretty much a cut and dry choose this and forget about all these instead of using the better of the trees anymore. I think they need to go back to their roots and start over they have tried to simplify it way too much.

@Stonekold: Then don't play the game. No one is forcing you to play it. I personally think that Warcraft can go as far as Blizzard wants it to. It is an infinitely expanding universe. However, they need to develop new lore, new characters, and new stories, and stop recycling (over and over) old lore exclusively. Pandaria was a good step in this direction, but sadly the constant neutrality of the pandarens in the expansion supposedly being the pinnacle of the Horde vs Alliance war made this one rather boring -- to me at least.

@Rixita: As for actual mechanics, I can agree with some of it. Oversimplifying the game was a very disappointing move for Blizzard to make, but it hardly killed the game. There are advantages to both sides of the argument, and the current one works well enough to get by.

@Rixita: Except you're wrong. Wow players, especially the ones who have been here since Classic wow like it for it's ties to Warcraft and its orgins, thats why classic wow, BC and WOTLK were the most favoured expansions because in Warcraft their tales were left unfinished, we all knew Illidan would return and the anticipation of finally challenging the Lich King at the height of his power is why most people say World of Warcraft ('s Story and Lore) died with the Lich King. Cataclysm tons of people hated because alot of people barely knew (or cared) about Deathwing pre- cataclysm, and MoP is now barely grasping the origins of wow at all, they literally made an entire expansion based around a few unimportant pandaren who were pretty irrelevant during the original Warcrafts, and by the next expansion (except for Turalyon and Alleria) there will be no ties to it's old lore what so ever.

@Dreignei: Through you're probably right about it becoming only a raid or qst hub (long is the list of things blizz meant to implement that were either scaled back or never saw the light of PTR). Technically the Nightmare wasn't defeated, in contrast Deathwing WAS defeated/killed outright, the 'True' source of the Nightmare (N'zoth) was "beaten back' into a rift in a corner of the Emerald Dream'; so it's possible that, due to Ysera and the other Aspects losing their powers that the Nightmare could re-emerge having a weaker opponent in the Green dragons, plus we're gonna have to kill N'zoth at some point (and whoever Old God #5 is; the Sha standing in for #4). I do hope they make Emerald Dream Expansion, at least to prolong the games life, cause aside from a Naga themed Great Sea expansion and another to finally head into the Great Dark to finish off the Legion, I can't think of anything else to make an expansion of.
