Preparing for PvP In 5.2

Preparing for PvP In 5.2

If you haven’t been keeping up on the latest World of Warcraft news, you might not be aware that World of Warcraft Patch 5.2: Throne of Thunder is on the horizon. Well, 5.2 is well on its way and it’s bringing PvE features like a brand new questing hub and a huge new raid, but it’s also introducing new features that will have a significant impact on the PvP aspects of World of Warcraft, including a number of class and gearing changes.

I thought this would be a great time to discuss some of the ways we can prepare for when 5.2 goes live and we can once again attend to the important business of watering the tree of awesome with the blood of our enemies.

Gearing Up
We’ve already covered that the way PvP gear is acquired is changing in patch 5.2, but I’ll briefly recap.

  • Rating requirements will be removed from PvP gear.
  • Malevolent Gladiator’s gear will be available for purchase with Honor Points.
  • Tyrannical Gladiator’s armor will be available for purchase for Conquest Points without meeting any currency requirements. Tyrannical Gladiator's weapons can be purchased after earning 7,250 Conquest Points for the season.
  • A new tier of Elite Tyrannical Gladiator's gear will be added that becomes available once 27000 Conquest Points have been earned for the season.
  • Team Rating will gradually increase during the season for teams and players who continue to compete in PvP. This system is explained in the Mists of Pandaria PvP Dev Watercooler.

As Bashiok mentioned in his recent 5.2 Currency Conversion blog, any unspent Conquest Points will turn into Honor. That could represent a significant chunk of Honor Points, so if you find that you don't have quite enough Conquest to buy or upgrade a piece now, you could still potentially afford to buy a piece of Honor gear when the new season starts.

If you’re just starting your PvP journey in 5.2, then you might want to think about investing in a set of crafted Dreadful Gladiator’s gear to get started on the right foot.

Decisions, Decisions
If you’re already wearing Malevolent Gladiator’s gear in patch 5.1, then you could be faced with a choice. In patch 5.2, the Item Upgrade vendors will no longer be active. A new set of non-upgradeable Malevolent Gladiator’s gear is being introduced in patch 5.2; though it is technically a lower item level, it also has boosted PvP Power and Resilience to compensate.

So, if you have the points to buy gear, do you buy a current Malevolent piece now, do you upgrade an existing piece before patch 5.2 arrives, or save points to buy new pieces once patch 5.2 arrives? Keep in mind that a fully upgraded (2/2) piece of 5.1 Malevolent Gladiator’s gear will be slightly better than its 5.2 counterpart, so if you already own pieces that you haven’t fully upgraded yet, then going for full upgrades might be a good course of action. On the other hand, even a piece that isn’t fully upgraded will be about as good as one of the brand new pieces in patch 5.2. Since any Conquest Points you have when patch 5.2 arrives will be turned into Honor that can be used to buy Malevolent pieces when the patch arrives, it’s up to you to decide how you want to spend those points.

Class Changes
Knowledge is power! Lots of class changes are coming in patch 5.2, so it’s a good idea to stay up to date on the latest changes by visiting the PTR patch note blog, and reviewing the class notes. Take note of the class changes—knowing what you, your teammates, and your foes are capable of will help shape the team compositions you use and the tactics you employ in battle.

If you’re feeling particularly feisty, you can download the Public Test Realm Client by visiting the Account Management page to experiment with the coming changes firsthand. Not only will you be helping us test the upcoming patch, but you’ll gain a keener grasp of what the changes will mean for you.

What About Mid-Season Catch Up?
That’s actually planned for patch 5.3. You can read more about it in the PvP Gear in 5.2 and Beyond blog I mentioned earlier.

When Does The New Season Begin?
Patch 5.2 is arriving soon, so keep an eye open for the blog announcing next season’s start date.

That’s Teamwork!
It can be difficult finding and fielding a team for organized PvP. If you’re looking for allies, you have many places to begin the recruitment process, ranging from the official forums to fan sites like Arena Junkies (also a great place to look for information), to just hopping into the General channel while playing to see if someone wants to play a few games.

If you’ve had success finding or forming an Arena Team or Rated Battleground group, how did you go about it? Let us know in the comments.

When is the mid-season catch-up taking effect because this week is the only week I've 2200 capped my conquest and I was hoping it'd start showing after I got capped but it did not. Does anyone know?

How long is a PVP season? 6 months ? Because conquest is hard to get ! And to get 27k of conquest for a season sucks if they come out with patch 5.3 and loose all that hard work !

People take pvp too seriously. When I pvp I have a blast. I give 100% but I don't wine when I get owned over and over again. I use it to blow off steam. Plus it's cool to fight something that has intelligence rather than a mindless mob that is predictable. I don't pvp well (as evident from my forays into arena and my many many duel losses) but I excel in BG's b/c I love creating chaos :) There's something for everyone. Find you niche and enjoy it!

and to answer your question blizz, i usually have success finding good arena partners in trade channel, but thats because im on tichondrius, but as for friends on lower pop realms arena junkies and teamfind.com are both places people have had alot of success too

And again I will ask as I have before in the past. Will those of us who stayed dedicated throughout the season and upgraded all of our gear be compensated for the nerfing of the item upgrade system? OR will it be normal Blizzard SOPs to spit on the people that still remain dedicated to making this a great game? Just curious. Other than that I dont have much of an issue with the new pvp "ideas" coming in 5.2.

@Phatalistic:If you carefully read the notes above you will see that any conquest gear that you have fully upgraded will be better than the honor gear (old conquest) that will be made available at the beginning of the new season. that will give you an advantage when the new arena season starts.

This game is broken. Blizz make it easier for me to get gear. Blizz make the bad classes not kill me so fast. Blizz, I don't want to grind and grind to get stuff cause I'm paying for a sub so I should be given everything I want. Blizz make my armor look cool. Blizz, why do they get fear, sheep, stun, burst? Blizz get off your !@# and do exactly what I say cause I pay for this. Blizz sucks cause its a corporation and all the corporations care about is money. Blizz I wasnt able to play for 4 months but I want to be on top so make it easy for me to get all the gear like the best players have been grinding for the last 4 months but make it happen in 4 days. Did I miss anything?

As a fury warrior I find I'm always lacking in gear until I get both PvP weapons. Weapons cost 3400 each so by the end of getting both weapons I've earned 15050. We don't even get the full benefit of having 2 PvP weapons. Assuming I was able to make 2200 a week that's still almost 7 weeks. Maybe make the second one cheaper or give us the full PvP power bonus from the weapons (I know that last one is a bit of a stretch). Just an idea to throw around :)

@Chillza: arms has better burst then fury in pvp at the moment. Due to the lack of crit from pvp gear, fury has trouble managing its damage output, as bloodthurst actually does less then white damage, and the need for crit to be able to enrage and use raging blow

@Chillza: He wants to be fury, and i 100% agree with him. Why are people being forced to go specs they don't want to just to be PVP viable? This needs to stop Blizzard.

Not only that but there are lots of things you need to do. Like destroying arms PVP and having Fury take over for at least one season.

Completely sick of all of these try hard arms wars who moan to me(and others) about how I should be arms.

It's our play style, leave us a lone. Just because you're the cookie cutter spec doesn't mean we need to be either.

Fury is PVP viable, not so much arena though. Fix it.

Started playing WOW with CAT. Was late into that edition, becuase just when I got my full CAT pvp gear, MOP was released. Frustrated, I left WOW for a few months. Just came back and did the pvp grind, and today got the Dreadful Gladiator gear. That is a long way from getting decent pvp gear, but it was a start. Now I am reading about the new season and how all I have done to this point was a waste of time. What is the point? I start grinding for at least 2 more levels of gear to be competitive? I play every day, and for several hours. How can anyone get all the points needed to get to the top gear levels? I may be a crap player, but it seems like I am chasing a "carrot on a stick". I will never get there, because the goal changes just as I am reaching it. Sorry for the rant, but so many hours trying to get somewhere in this game has become a big disappointment. Sorry for the rant. Does not solve or change a thing. Such a huge waste of time.

@Raskert: It's a pointless rant. The point of the season changes is to keep restarting the competition. It's like if instead of having different football seasons, the teams just kept facing each other to stay on top of the table. A team that dominated a decade ago could still be on top of the ladder because all their best players don't age and stay the best. There's no effort, or reason to keep training.

Every time the season changes, it puts people closer to an even start. It's easier to get the same gear from last year, which makes it easier for you to get the same gear everyone else is trying to get.

Just remember, this is the "World" of Warcraft. There is no end. The world just keeps on spinning... ;)

@Raskert: Well there's your problem right there.. You said you quit for a few months once MoP was released, so that put you behind quite a bit. Those that hadn't taken a break were already well ahead of you, so you can't expect to catch up. If you're not being consistent in your playing, then you will never reach top gear at all. Your best bet is to stop caring about having the best gear and to just have fun.

@Sardentreas: no rouges are already way strong all you have to do is know how to play them well and you can be really good. Rouges have so many stuns that before I can even hit them once I am half health. That is just my opinion though...
