Preparing for PvP In 5.2

Preparing for PvP In 5.2

If you haven’t been keeping up on the latest World of Warcraft news, you might not be aware that World of Warcraft Patch 5.2: Throne of Thunder is on the horizon. Well, 5.2 is well on its way and it’s bringing PvE features like a brand new questing hub and a huge new raid, but it’s also introducing new features that will have a significant impact on the PvP aspects of World of Warcraft, including a number of class and gearing changes.

I thought this would be a great time to discuss some of the ways we can prepare for when 5.2 goes live and we can once again attend to the important business of watering the tree of awesome with the blood of our enemies.

Gearing Up
We’ve already covered that the way PvP gear is acquired is changing in patch 5.2, but I’ll briefly recap.

  • Rating requirements will be removed from PvP gear.
  • Malevolent Gladiator’s gear will be available for purchase with Honor Points.
  • Tyrannical Gladiator’s armor will be available for purchase for Conquest Points without meeting any currency requirements. Tyrannical Gladiator's weapons can be purchased after earning 7,250 Conquest Points for the season.
  • A new tier of Elite Tyrannical Gladiator's gear will be added that becomes available once 27000 Conquest Points have been earned for the season.
  • Team Rating will gradually increase during the season for teams and players who continue to compete in PvP. This system is explained in the Mists of Pandaria PvP Dev Watercooler.

As Bashiok mentioned in his recent 5.2 Currency Conversion blog, any unspent Conquest Points will turn into Honor. That could represent a significant chunk of Honor Points, so if you find that you don't have quite enough Conquest to buy or upgrade a piece now, you could still potentially afford to buy a piece of Honor gear when the new season starts.

If you’re just starting your PvP journey in 5.2, then you might want to think about investing in a set of crafted Dreadful Gladiator’s gear to get started on the right foot.

Decisions, Decisions
If you’re already wearing Malevolent Gladiator’s gear in patch 5.1, then you could be faced with a choice. In patch 5.2, the Item Upgrade vendors will no longer be active. A new set of non-upgradeable Malevolent Gladiator’s gear is being introduced in patch 5.2; though it is technically a lower item level, it also has boosted PvP Power and Resilience to compensate.

So, if you have the points to buy gear, do you buy a current Malevolent piece now, do you upgrade an existing piece before patch 5.2 arrives, or save points to buy new pieces once patch 5.2 arrives? Keep in mind that a fully upgraded (2/2) piece of 5.1 Malevolent Gladiator’s gear will be slightly better than its 5.2 counterpart, so if you already own pieces that you haven’t fully upgraded yet, then going for full upgrades might be a good course of action. On the other hand, even a piece that isn’t fully upgraded will be about as good as one of the brand new pieces in patch 5.2. Since any Conquest Points you have when patch 5.2 arrives will be turned into Honor that can be used to buy Malevolent pieces when the patch arrives, it’s up to you to decide how you want to spend those points.

Class Changes
Knowledge is power! Lots of class changes are coming in patch 5.2, so it’s a good idea to stay up to date on the latest changes by visiting the PTR patch note blog, and reviewing the class notes. Take note of the class changes—knowing what you, your teammates, and your foes are capable of will help shape the team compositions you use and the tactics you employ in battle.

If you’re feeling particularly feisty, you can download the Public Test Realm Client by visiting the Account Management page to experiment with the coming changes firsthand. Not only will you be helping us test the upcoming patch, but you’ll gain a keener grasp of what the changes will mean for you.

What About Mid-Season Catch Up?
That’s actually planned for patch 5.3. You can read more about it in the PvP Gear in 5.2 and Beyond blog I mentioned earlier.

When Does The New Season Begin?
Patch 5.2 is arriving soon, so keep an eye open for the blog announcing next season’s start date.

That’s Teamwork!
It can be difficult finding and fielding a team for organized PvP. If you’re looking for allies, you have many places to begin the recruitment process, ranging from the official forums to fan sites like Arena Junkies (also a great place to look for information), to just hopping into the General channel while playing to see if someone wants to play a few games.

If you’ve had success finding or forming an Arena Team or Rated Battleground group, how did you go about it? Let us know in the comments.

@Sardentreas: no rouges are already way strong all you have to do is know how to play them well and you can be really good. Rouges have so many stuns that before I can even hit them once I am half health. That is just my opinion though...

I discovered Battlemasters.org this season, which was a great help since my server is really lacking in pvp.

The only thing that I really have a problem with in PvP, are those damned pillars that all those healers just LoS around. Some will say it is a tactic, its skill to be able to "run away". But in my opinion. Its friggen crap. Skill is being able to play your character to the point where you don't have to Run away and heal up around a pillar. Its just annoying. Take those damn LoS pillars out. lol

@Priestys: Yes, it is annoying, however it is a valuable tactic. Yes it is annoying outplaying someone and they run like a !@#$% and hide around a pillar, and just delay their death, but at the same time you should take advantage of this same tool and use it against your opponent.

On a random note, the Tyrannical armor (specifically speaking --> warlocks) look ugly. IMO.. Nevertheless, I am looking forward to see the changes live!

Love the game spent so much time in it it would make most sick. Still the Daily thing has to stop. My guild just quit WOW. really they all left they spent weeks doing dailies then read the patch to find out there is more to come. Can we maybe find something else? An unsafe city where it has both ally and Horde like a Dal but it gets attacked fending off attackers gets one rep accross the board. PVE town and a PVP zone. anything but the daily grind. I dont care if we even have to pop our pets out. Anything but the daily grind. After 4 90s and leveling every profession even Im at my WOW grind thresshold.

@Igornatt: What grind are you talking about? As far as I know the only rep grind coming out is the one on the Thunder Isle (and that is built through the raid, not dailies).

I am sitting here reading all of your complaints and gripes. !@#$%ing about one class having more CC then another class and one class being doing more damage then another class. Classes being nerfed and its pissing people off. Try thinking about it in this way. Yes Druids have alot of CC, however I drop druids all the time on my Shadow priest. PvP is not about who has more to offer, is about out playing your component. If your running into a comp that is challenging you, thats when you try figuring out how to defeat them. Dont ^-*!@ because "oh warriors do to much burst" shut up. My resto shaman locks a warrior down all the time. Just like in any situation in life if you come to a difficulty you adapt and over come it. You dont just ask someone else to make you better. Learn you toons and find a compatible player and you cant lose. If you dont like the way WOW is turning out then leave. They arent making you play. They arent holding your family ransom, stop #$%^-ing and leave. Last but not least, @Nightpains, I wish I could find you ingame so that I can show you that its not blizzard or wow thats broke, its just that you suck at the game.

@Acespanda: "oh warriors do to much burst"

Weeeelllll.... They do. If you look at Gladiators last seasons, Arms Warriors had much over 2x the representation that they should have had, assuming that every DPS class should be just as viable as the other in PvP. Theoretically, Arms should have had a 4% split of overall PVP DPS Gladiator standings. They ended up having something like 22%. There are comprehensive data sets that you can check out.

And its even worse with healers, Shamans/Paladins had well over 85% of the representation when they theoretically should have had under 20% each, since there are 6 healer specs. There is a certain line when classes are simply OP.

@Walajii: Unfortunately I must agree with that fact. I was gearless at first and got owned by most of players and pve mobs. Now I'm decently geared and still get owned by most players. I think that enhancement might be a better choice or resto.

To the players. I've come to realize,as should you, that complaining about what the "Devs" do to the game doesnt mean anything. people like Daxxarri and other blizz poster front-men personel type this crap up from the depths of thier toilets clearly to make themselves feel better. The "customer" or player in this case is clearly not an issue with blizzard, activision, or the POS that WoW has clearly become. I, along with alot of you have expressed discontent thru posting on these forums, hoping that the dev team would listen, or read, what the SUBSCRIBER is saying. they dont. I can bet any amount they dont even read these, hence the request sticky button. the balance that they so passionately speak of is a just a pipe dream of the players, and a bad joke from the dev team. it has become an unreal push for quanity in the stead of quality. whats happening to WoW is what happened to bags of chips. price stays the same, but the bag seems to be a lil more empty every time. ripping ideas from the world of games, ex. pokemon, farmville, has become the focus of the developers instead of creating a uniqe gaming experience for the people who pay the money to subscribe. it was clearly easier to put more brain farts, eerrrr, cc into the game than actually building the classes with true thought. you dumbed down the game from technique and skill to a 6 tier pure cookie cutter talent system, o, with a cd, macroable into a one-shot setup. its clear that you are out of ideas and may just be time for you to reroll irl.

this will get me banned im sure, but oh well

i am sick of doing pvp for honor points and ending up with crap gear using honor points. i dont do arena or chase valor points, more and more people are leaving blizz because they are sick of facing the fable of do what blizz says or you end up with nothing, its time the nerdie people who set up the scenerios that we must play by changed there ideas, we are not all 13 year old kids, how about honor points buys better gear instead of crap

@Seilna: Firstly ... *their
Secondly, it's Blizzard's game, if you don't like it, don't play it. Seems pretty logical to me. Lastly, the point of honor is to get you started, not give you the best gear the game has to offer, or even close to the best, it's just irrational if you think that you should nearly be given the gear you would normally have to earn through skill in the arenas or RBG.

i never ever post...but sometimes i feel as though...nothing really changes...when i look at it...it just seems as though stats are moved around to so many different places...we're all just what we were when we all started....kind of like...car salesmen move money around to make you think your getting something for cheaper...but it's really out of pocket is cheaper but fees and other stuff goes in other places...so on the surface it looks like your getting huge deal up front...but you pay for it anyway in the long run....just how i feel sometimes...yes i know no one asked...but thats the good thing about forums...we can post what we want

wonder how may people will say..."youre dumb...so continue youre current record of never ever posting" whew...i feel better now

can you just look at how arena and pvp was back in wotlk and make it similar to that again. Also having to actually earn your conquest gear by hitting a certain arena rating was awesome, it actually put some purpose into arena rather than just bragging rights. And if u do that don't let people spam rated bgs to get conquest gear, that's lame give them like gold or something. Kinda stupid that pvper's can't earn any gold. but as someone before me said, its stupid that the game relies so heavily on cds rather than tactics and rotation (its not rotation I but cant think of the word for it either lol)
