I remember the zombie event.

I remember going in to xroads with the plague and purposely corpse explode to infect and make more zombies, which made the entire town unusable as a questing hub. the entire /1 chat would be in an uproar and argument about learning to have fun with an event vs. griefing people with the event.

Because of that, we don't get events like that anymore.

How was it any different than if a bunch of horde or alliance got bored and just raided a city in the numbers the zombies usually had? The zombie event just gave the incentive

A) Because you could easily grief your own faction and not even have to put in a quarter of the effort getting the amount of people (Horde or Alliance) it would take to cause the same amount of grief.

B) Because there was no way that horde (or Alliance) could amass the amount of people necessary to grind all four capital cities to a halt (especially since it only took one or two people to completely destroy the only NPCs that mattered) at the same time.

I have never, ever seen Horde (or Alliance) be able to cut off the entire leveling population of a server (both their own side and the opposing factions). Except during that zombie invasion. (Guess what, not everyone wants to do end game or has max-level characters to play on! Stopping them from basically playing the game for the course of the event is not fun for them, at all.)

Never seen them able to stop the activity in all four capital cities at the same time either, except during the zombie event since it was people of their own faction + opposing that were gleefully griefing everyone else. (The ability to use opposing faction portals in Shatt while a zombie only made it worse).

Also, if you tried to fight against them, all they had to do was barf on you and BAM! you're now one of them (getting attacked by people, guards, and other zombies) and have to go die to get back to normal. Especially after they made it nearly impossible to remove the disease.

Yeah, totally different.

The event's not over yet...

December 7th is like two weeks away. They seriously can't do much more than this, the next patch will arrive tomorrow, the world will change in the patch after that within tomorrow and December 7th and then finally we will be able to fly in Azeroth and see the destruction that came.

So far, this event doesn't come close to the Gates of Ahn'Qiraj in 2006 and also doesn't come close to the Plague Invasion of 2008.

This is 'Cataclysm' we're supposed to be talking about but for some reason it seems to be in title only and not actual in-game events.

That said I'm loving this content so far, but it could be so much more. MAKE USE of your game engine Blizzard, there's so much technology to work with here.

Lets see tornados, floods, cities on fire (like Stratholme), NPC's laying dead in the streets.

I don't think there is a precident for elementals turning humanoids into more elementals, but I'm sure blizz can make it happen....

Here's an idea: form a raid against an enemy city while THEY are doing the event. Then see what happens :D

Your whole raid gets crushed by the might of Lag + 60-80 people AOEing down elementals in cities? No, the best time to attack is right after a battle, when everybody is jumping into the dungeons to marathon some quick JP.

I like how 2 years on people are still upset they couldn't use the AH for a week during the zombie event.

Get over it.

Mainstream MMORPGs, lead by WoW, have been going after the "fun little game when bored" goal instead of the "unpredictable virtual world" model that early MMO's prided themselves on.

It's very disappointing to me, as instant gratification and predictability are the hallmark of single-player games, not massively-multiplayer role-playing ones.

People want to log on, know exactly what is going to happen, and want nothing to disturb their gametime that they didn't strictly agree to earlier on.

I don't like it. I don't think it belongs in MMO's, but sadly it's going to take time for the EQ genre to finish dying.

Whilst I do not share the same full negative feelings as this post, I do wish there was some form of impact for failing.

You do realize that this event doesn't have a happy ending, right?

The impact for "failing" is that Deathwing bursts out, destroys the world, wrecks havoc, and changes the world as we know it forever.

Sounds like a happy ending to me.

Hmm, I s'pose the OP was not around for the actual zombie event.

There was a MASSIVE amount of QQ after the event. I would say that out of the 3+ years I've been on the forums, these events stand out in my mind as having the most enormous amount of QQ to ever take over the forums:

1) RealID posting fiasco
2) Ret paladins when WOTLK came out
3) Zombie event

Seriously, I'm not talking that one or two threads were made on the subject. It was insane. A lot of people hated it, so I'm not surprised that they're not doing something similar this year.

As with the entirety of the event its ramping up.

Do not count your chickens untill your eggs have hatched, and do not count your eggs till your hens have layed them.

It is farly controlled right now. And to be honest, I have yet to see a failed attempt at protecting a city, something like 90+ 80s camping in SW / IF kinda of insure that.

However perminant change would be bad. Having certain areas under war untill the next event kick off might be ok though. Just something where people can still use the needed parts of the city. (AH / Bank / Class trainers etc.)
They said there is 4 parts to the event, this is the fourth. Since this unlocked bosses, I doubt there's another part to it before the shattering.

I've come to the realization that it's just not worth the time to explain to people that this is all that's happening for the event and the only thing after this is the Shattering.

Ya, even as someone who considers it to be the best WoW event, I have to confirm that the QQ was intense. And is why we'll never see something that crazy ever again. :(

I would like our actual involvement to have some sort of impact though.

Right now, we have elementals invading. I can kick ass and take them out and Orgimmar is relatively safe for the time being.

Or:

I can do nothing, and Orgimmar is relatively safe for the time being.
