Lockups

For a while now, I have been experiencing lockups while playing WoW. The screen will freeze, and whatever sounds that were playing when the computer crashed continue, resulting in a horribly loud "BRRRRRRRRR" sound from my speakers.

Since the computer is completely unresponsive, the only way I can recover from these crashes is to shut down the computer via the power button.

The first time I log back in to wow after the crash, the helmet and shoulder pieces of whatever character I was playing during the crash are no longer displayed, although they are still equipped. I have to unequip/equip them before they will display again.

These crashes seem to occur when a specific action is taken in-game. For example, the most recent crash took place the instant I clicked "trade" with my friend from the right-click menu. It can also occur when I jump, use an ability or cast a spell. It doesn't happen when I am doing nothing in-game. It doesn't seem to make any difference whether I am in a raid or just running around, just when I push buttons or click things. No single action seems to consistently cause this crash.

I use dual NVIDIA GeForce GTS 240 graphics cards, SLI. I run windows 7. I've checked on the NVIDIA site, and I do have the correct drivers. I downloaded some software to monitor the temperature of my graphics cards and to control the fan speed, but the GPU temp never gets above ~65. Plus, it doesn't seem to matter how long my computer has been on, or how long wow has been running.

The thing that confuses me the most is that these crashes occur much more often when I am running programs in the background that talk to the internet, such as Ventrilo or Google Chrome. I can't think of any reason for this except that my network card is involved somehow, although this wouldn't explain the hard lockup.

I'm a little bit at a loss. These crashes have been going on for a while (well before 4.0.3), and I have begun to think I may just need to get a new graphics card(s). I just want to make absolutely sure that the graphics card is causing the problem first. Is it possible to solve this problem?

Thanks!

my nvidia card started going crazy on me as well. and it in fact was the card.
look at the cards to see if there are any raised caps on them

Sorry, but what do you mean by raised caps? Should I look for physical damage to the cards?

Can you post some information about your computer? You can find this information in the Direct X Diagnostic Tool:

Click on Start
Click on Run
Type in: dxdiag (In Vista, type dxdiag in the search field)
Hit Enter or OK

Click on the Save All Information button at the bottom, and create a dxdiag text file, and copy and paste the dxdiag file (down to the "DirectX Components" section for XP, down to the "DirectShow Filters" section for Vista) into your reply.

We've actually seen different issues with the particular Dell system that you are using.

Have you eve had to make any changes into the BIOS in order for the game to work properly?

No, I haven't had to change my BIOS for the game to work. The game runs fine with great graphics and framerate, except for these lockups.

Another program may be interfering. Try selective startup to get around this. Please be aware this mode will disable any security programs you may have running so refrain from doing other things while in this mode.

Hold the Windows key on your keyboard and press the letter 'R'. In the Run field type "msconfig" and hit Enter.
In the General tab:

1. Choose Selective Startup
2. Disable (uncheck) Load startup items
3. Click OK and Reboot

To undo selective startup, just recheck Load startup items.

I chose Selective Startup and disabled Load startup items and rebooted. Should I try and see if I can get it to crash? Also, it seems that choosing Selective Startup did not disable my antivirus software (I use Norton). Should I temporarily disable it?

Also, I have noticed this crash seems to occur much more often when I run programs like Ventrilo or Google Chrome in the background, but not exclusively. Is there some behavior that programs like these exhibit that might interfere with WoW so much it crashes the entire computer?

I haven't seen Google Chrome cause any issues, but you never know. I would try running the game with the least amount of background apps running. For Norton, I would try running the game with it disabled first, and then enabled to see if you notice a difference.

Actually, you might even go as far as uninstalling Norton temporarily. Norton has been known to use a lot of resources, and disabling it doesn't always keep Norton from still running.

If you do decide to uninstall Norton temporarily I suggest using the removal tool available on their website. This will make sure that it is properly uninstalled.

Here's a link to the removal tool:

http://us.norton.com/support/kb/web_view.jsp?wv_type=public_web&docurl=20080710133834EN&ln=en_US

Just select the Norton product that you have and follow the directions.

I may uninstall Norton soon, since I was planning on letting my current Norton account lapse anyways so that I can share a subscription with my family. In the meantime, I would prefer to leave my computer protected.

While I was doing some research online, I came across something interesting. I found a couple pages discussing how for some systems, certain desktop widgets were causing crashes. The widgets that were noted for sometimes causing crashes included the weather forecast widget that I use. I don't generally run many programs in the background as I play wow, so aside from Norton and maybe Google chrome, these were the only things running. I wonder if they were causing the problem? If they were, maybe I won't have any problems without any widgets running.

I wouldn't know if those widgets were causing the crash. Have you had any luck running the game without those running?
