World of Warcraft: Cataclysm Release Dates

We wanted to remind everyone that World of Warcraft: Cataclysm is planned to be released simultaneously in Australia, New Zealand and North America. What that means for our players in Australia and New Zealand is that the Cataclysm expansion won't be a local midnight release as it has been in the past. Instead, the global release will coincide with the December 7th, 2010 at 12:00 AM PST release date, which equates to December 7th at 7:00 PM AEDT (9:00 PM NZDT). Retailers should have copies available at the appropriate local time, and it's a good idea to check with stores in your area regarding availability.

We look forward to sharing adventures with players from all over the world in World of Warcraft: Cataclysm. Thanks for joining us!

OMFG ... this IS going to be fun. Thousands of WoW players will be rushing home from the shops and all will try to log in simultaneously, therefore frying the log-in servers.

Blizz, I hope you'll have some computer technicians on standby that night who will deal with/fix all the chaos that might ensue.

At any rate, I WILL be hitting my local EB Games shop up at 7pm sharp XD

Well - looks like a refund from my local JB-HiFi and onto digital downloads.

I'm already going into the store around midday (local time) on the 7th of December, I either get the goods or a refund.

Seems a stupid decision Blizzard given all our stores shut at 5:30pm here...

Our store told me they'd be open extra because of that. Apparantly, they have a lot of pre-orders ... one guy must've pre-ordered as early as March 2009!!!

At any rate, they'll be open.

A friend of mine called his store to see whether there would be a midnight release and told him he could pick it up in the morning on Dec 7th and another saying it was still a midnight release, yet when i called my store they said 7pm

this is getting confusing..

I did the rounds at my local shopping centre, and both the JB Hi-Fi and the EB Games stores said they were selling Cataclysm at 7pm on the 7th of December (I'm in Sydney).

JB Hi-Fi have a list of all the stores that will be selling the game on the 7th, but I can't seem to link it here - just click through to their games page, wait for the banner to show Cataclysm and click for the list. Can't seem to see any further info for other specialists on their websites yet though...

Bear in mind, guys - ANZ players have traditionally only been able to purchase the game/expansions on the day AFTER the US, so this is (give or take) 5 hours earlier than we were able to purchase Lich King, etc, depending on your time zone.

Why do we have to be in line with the US?
iirc WOTLK and TBC weren't, so why the change this time?

Thanks for that info Dax. That's great timing.

Hello Daxxarri, i was wondering if the only reason blizzard isn't showing up in Australia is because of the time or if there's another reason? Just curious because the brisbane sc2 launch was quite popular, was looking forward to the same thing for Cataclysm but unfortunately no, my Question is Will blizzard come back to Australia (preferably brisbane) when they do their other Starcraft / diablo launches?

Tl : Dr what's blizzards current thought patterns on returning to Australia for another launch? did starcraft 2 Australia launch go well enough or not?

thank you :) :) :)

I guess on the plus side, if blizzard never comes back my signed copy of Starcraft 2 means more =D

Hey daxx. Are their any plans to lower pings for oceanic players by moving some oceanic realms to Blizzard Singapore?
I'd like a few to be hosted out of Sydney but I realize that its not finacially viable.
Singapore would be a compromise and would lower pings from US-West by about 100ms.

So not only do we not have the midnight launch which was hugely successful for WOTLK and SC2, not only do we have the disappointment of finding we could have ordered and downloaded a digital copy cheaper and without lining up at the store, we now have to wait until 6pm on the 7th??????????????

That is complete nonsense. The servers don't go live until 6pm, whats the downside of having retailers sell the physical copies earlier during the day? This rubbish about "global release" is just a lie. The people who made the mistake of pre-ordering physical copies will be hours behind everyone else, AGAIN.

what absolute BS!!! No1 can play till the servers go live, and If im paying over 100 bucks to get my collectors edition which you cant DL online i would expect that i would be able to pick it up at 12am on December 7 as promised by EB games, It looks like your Legal department might have a bit of work on their hands for doing this

As usual Us on the other side of the world seem to mean little or nothing to Blizzard. Hell Australia or NZ dont even get a Midnight launch i suppose thats so there is "global release". I have a question... Parts of the world that are behind PST, do they get the launch on december 6 to keep in with Global Release???

Yeah this is quite disappointing blizzard there's no harm in selling it earlier in the day its not like we will actually be able to play earlier. Just means we have to wait till 9pm. Now I have to go to the store wait in line drive back home and wait in a queue of 5000+ will be my bet thnx

You are of course aware that there aren't that many of them.
I think there's only Hawaii, Alaska, French Polynesia, Samoa and Tonga. And I have serious doubts that there are many players in the latter three regions...

So if we get the DDL it wont be any earlier then?

So your making the eastern states US players wait until 3am (PST) to get their copies too right? They won't be able to get them at a midnight party and just have to wait till 3am to play them?

Or is it just the Oceanic players getting the shaft over time zones and box copies?

Why are you forcing game companies to sell it at X time instead of X day. Let us grab our games early and get them installed so we are not waiting around in line to get our copies when the servers go live. This is annoying enough that I won't be buying the collectors editions in the future, I'll be getting the plain digital edition so I can play right away.

Rethink this policy and let the game retailers sell the game any time they want on the 7th. flipping the switch on the servers to turn on Cata will be a perfectly working gating mechanic without making store wait till 7pm/4pm in the afternoon.

Please pass these sentiments up the chain Daxxarri.

I'm not usually one to complain, in fact you'll find that I think this is my first post on the forums, old or new, but I had to add my post to those above.

My fiancee and I have purchased a collectors edition each. We reserved and paid for them well before the digital download was announced. We were told (however erroneously) that we would be able to pick our shiny boxed copies up with enough time to get home, install, upgrade our accounts and start playing when 12PST ticked over.

Now, with a week to go, we're informed that the local EB will not be able to sell early and will in fact only start selling the minute the servers go live.

Given that the lines will be significant at EB, that we live an hour from the city and that we've shelled out a considerable amount of cash over the digital download edition, I'm upset that while my guild mates who have purchased the downloadable version will be playing, I'll be waiting in line. I doubt that I will be able to join them for an hour or two after release.

So, given that we can't get to the content anyway, why not allow us to purchase the game 1 or maybe even 2 hours before the servers go live? What possible harm could this do?

I'm not claiming that because we're paying more for a CE that we should get preferential treatment, but I do think that the current 'world wide simultaneous release' policy is a poor decision and will have an impact on bricks and mortar resellers and players who can't or won't (for whatever reason) buy the downloadable version.

We've already seen above that people are considering cancelling the reservations they've made locally to buy the electronic version. Poor retailers. I really can't imagine that they're happy about this decision either.

So I urge you, give us sufficient time, at least a couple of hours before the servers go live, to pick up our copies, travel home and do all the installation/patching/registering we need to do to enjoy the game with our electronic copy totting guildmates.

Because for some of us die-hard tragic fans, there is no option but to buy a CE from the local store. Missing out on that content isn't even a possibility.

- Syyn.

PS: Incidentally, what is the policy regarding people who have purchased via mail-order as I have done in previous years? Are those poor saps waiting until the morning of the 8th!? ... Or when their copies arrive on the morning of the 7th via express courier, will the embargo be broken anyway?
