Anyone come up with a good feral hybrid spec?

I miss being uncrittable with a cat DPS spec. I have played emergency tank many times on a sloppy boss kill, but now I can't. I still have a !@!# ton of dodge, but the 1st crit 1 shots me.

I also miss being able to tank heroics in my DPS spec with out the healers whining about me taking too much damage.

I was thinking about dropping fury swipes for thick hide because of the lack luster DPS it provides, but I was wondering what anyone else has tried.

Here is my thoughts:

Yeah, Natural Reaction is mandatory for any kind of tanking. -12% damage taken is too good to pass up. Other than that it looks as solid as a hybrid spec can be.

Also viable, if you don't mind losing a bunch of energy if you have to shift out of cat form mid fight...might hurt your dps in that situation.

But an insta-3stack of FFF is convenient and lets you get your threat up faster by not wasting GCDs stacking up FFF

I covered feral tank/DPS hybrid specc'ing extensively in this guide on my blog:

As a 10m tank, I would not be able to deal with losing a viable interrupt or the Infected Wounds debuff.

It mostly depends on your situation. Your glyph choices will also further widen the gap between your tanking and DPSing abilities.

Essentially you're stuck with being somewhere between 85-90% effective with one, and close to or at 100% effectivness with the other. That hasn't changed.

Moreover you will need two sets of gear, as Bears will not reforge Mastery in its current state. That may change in later tiers, but for now it's +Dodge as far as I know.

Link to source? I'd love to read up on it.
(Not saying you're lying...I really do want to read up on post-nerf Mastery and gearing)

After digging for 15 minutes I found it.

As with most of my "mathy fact stuff" it came from Reesi -

This is what I'd go with for lvl 85. It misses the pounce+ravage for cat and loses Pulverize for bear. Should be quite serviceable in either tank or DPS roles.

Can be brought down to lvl 80 by losing Master/Natural Shapeshifter and two out of the feral tree, probably Brutal Impact.

Not in any sort of Raid format. 5mans maybe. I don't even know if I'd attempt Heroic 5mans without Pulverize.

I'm not in beta, so I don't know what it's like at lvl 85. I wouldn't think the extra crit would make that much of a mitigation bonus.

Of course, I would want a real tank for raiding. From what I got of the OP's situation however, he's talking about DPS in raids and tanking 5-mans. The spec I laid out was more to keep the raid dps high and the tank as secondary, but still viable.

9% crit is a huge number of Savage Defense procs, espeically with how low Crit % will be when starting to gear up.

Honestly for his purpose I'd sooner lose a point in Primal Madness or Fury Swipes than Pulverize.

Aren't you innately uncrittable in bear form now? I didn't think you needed to talent it anymore.

No, you need Thick Hide now rather than Survival of the Fittest to be crit-immune.

You might be right. I'm used to the very high crit rates in wotlk (I don't even remember what my crit was before that). Even at the beginning of wotlk, crit rates were quite high. And then there's the question of what percentage of your mitigation Savage Defense really is. It's not something that's terribly obvious.

Well i opted for this spec:

Ran a few heroics/event bosses in my DPS gear with JP bought tank items and worked just fine.

Also felt incredible OP fighting warriors, rogues, and huntards in the BG's.

Yet to give it a try full DPS raiding though

It's not terribly hard to find out, now that absorbs are properly tracked in the combat log. Any damage meter mod should be able to show you the amount of damage taken and the amount of damage absorbed.

I don't have numbers from a recent raid, but for dungeons the absorb is quite a high percentage. Not that it should be entirely surprising, given how OP Savage Defense is right now.
