My point was that, like it or not, we do very heavily have to rely on our hots for raid healing. I have yet to see a priest consider it a good idea to raid heal with Heal, Greater Heal and Flash Heal, foregoing PoH/ProM/CoH/PW:S/renew. We can't simply get away from using rejuv/wg/sm and "use something else."
Ok, we are not supposed to stop using HoTs and swap entirely to cast-time spells.
The new model is for all healers in Cata (not WotLK) to have 3 very similar heals: a short, expensive heal, a cheap basic heal, and an expensive big heal. After that, we use our unigue healing spells to fill in any gaps.
The model will be the druids heal with Nourish, Healing Touch, and Regrowth for emergencies. We use Lifebloom on the tanks, and if necessary Rejuv on DPS; Swiftmend anyone in the middle of a large group. Wild Growth only when applicable.
Right now because we are all in Wrath gear and with Wrath spell-costs fighting Wrath bosses, its hard to see this model play out right.
But all healers will eventually rely on those 3 basic spells propped up with each classes uniue flavor of healing: Druids-HoTs, Pallies-AOE & instants, Priests- shields and AOE, Shamans- multi-target & HoTs
You're not supposed to just stop using all HoTs, but they are switching to be more situational, and if Blizzard gets all its numbers right (thats a big "If" btw) most healing classes should do comprable healing.
