Topic Troll Druids Lore
Edited by Zulgazharg on 12/7/10 9:17 AM (PST)
I figured I'd post some official Lore to help those who will be Role Playing troll Druids. And, for the new forums and the new folks that may come to Silver Hand in CATA! People seem confused about how the trolls got their powers- well just like ALL their other magic (except for the Warlocks, which use Orc/Fel magic) the Druids call upon the Loa Spirits. That's right, no Night Elf goddess Elune nor Bloodhoof Earth Mother involved.
They were taught by Gonk the Great Hunter- the Raptor Loa, who in turn set the Darkspear to work learning from the other troll Loas that you have come to know from the d20 RPG books, and in game from Zul'Gurub, Zul'Aman, and Zul'Drak. To help roleplayers, here is a quick list:
Gonk – Zen’tabra calls him the Great Hunter; his totemic avatar is the raptor
Zanza – The Zandalar respect and venerate Zanza, and pray to him to grant power to their heroes. Legend tells that the various tomes describing troll magic were stolen from him by the high elves, and used against his people. He helps those that have helped the Zandalar tribe.
Dambala – She is the lord of serpents and treachery
Legba – He is master of speed and motion
Lukou – She is the goddess of healing and respite
Ogoun – He is the god of war, a crafty spirit capable of defeating his enemies with hexes and curses
Bwonsamedi – He is the god of cemeteries and the dead- and hates undead
Shango – He controls the realm of storms, and guards the secrets of lightning and mayhem
Akil’zon – His totemic avatar is the eagle
Halazzi – His totemic avatar is the lynx
Jan’alai – His totemic avatar is the dragonhawk
Nalorakk – His totemic avatar is the bear
Shadra – Her totemic avatar is the spider
Ula-tek – Her totemic avatar is the serpent; she could be another aspect of Hakkar
Akali – His totemic avatar is the rhinoceros
Har’koa – Her mate is Loque’nahak; her totemic avatar is the snow leopard
Mam’toth – His totemic avatar is the mammoth
Quetz’lun – Her totemic avatar is the serpent; she could be another aspect of Hakkar
Rhunok – His totemic avatar is the polar bear; he could be another aspect of Nalorakk
Sseratus – His totemic avatar is the cobra
Bethekk – Her totemic avatar is the panther
Hakkar – The former god of blood and of war, known as the Soulflayer
Hethiss – His totemic avatar is the serpent
Hir’eek – His totemic avatar is the bat
Shirvallah – His totemic avatar is the tiger
Kimbul – His totemic avatar is the tiger; he could be another aspect of Shirvallah
Mueh’zala – The Tablet of Theka calls him the Night’s Friend; he is the god of death (could be the Farraki version of Bwonsamdi)
I think out of respect or power, I'm going to RP Old Zul having a crush on the new druid trainer. The information about troll druids is seen in CATA when the lovely Zen'Tabra explains to characters willing to listen, how the Darkspear Druids came into being...

And here is the In-Game dialogue:
Zen'tabra, are you one of the druids from the rumors? Were there druids on the Echo Isles long ago?
Zen'tabra says: We spread dose rumors, mon. Keep'n Zalazane and others off our tails. Don't be believin' everyting ya hear.
Zen'tabra says: No, we be new to de craft, only learnin' a few years ago. But in some ways, we spent our lives preparin' ta answer de call...
What were you before you were druids, then?
Zen'tabra says: Some o' us be loa priests, witch doctors before. Like Zalazane...
Zen'tabra's face grows hard as her gaze drifts south
Zen'tabra says: We thought de spirits be angry wit us; we did not expect it be Zalazane slowly cuttin' us off from dem. We knew he be strong, but not dat strong...and by de time his voodoo had reached de other isles, we was powerless ta stop 'im.
How did you escape Zalazane?
Zen'tabra closes her eyes and shakes her head
Zen'tabra says: When Vol'jin called for everyone ta flee, we...we couldn't face de tribe after failing dem so badly. So, we fled south, ta de untamed jungle islands.
Zen'tabra says: De wilds claimed a few o' us dat first night. We found safety in a deep cave in de center o' de isle, but me dreams dere were not peaceful: I be havin' a vision!
What was the vision?
Zen'tabra's head snaps back to you, her eyes bright and her smile wide around her tusks
Zen'tabra says: 'Twas a jungle bigger and wilder dan I ever seen! And before me, de ancient raptor loa only talked about in Zandalari tales — Gonk, de Great Hunter!
Zen'tabra says: De raptor spirit spoke ta me, told me he had brought me spirit to a place called de Emerald Dream. Da spirit had been trapped, like de other loa on de Echo Isles, by Zalazane's magic. But Gonk, bein' an ancient spirit, was able ta reach across and bring me spirit ta him, even through Zalazane's voodoo.
What did the spirit want?
Zen'tabra says: Zalazane's mindless servants were killin' all de beasts o' de isles, burnin' up de trees and plants too. Gonk needed us ta save de life on de isles. But since we not be able to draw upon de power o' de loa wit Zalazane in power, Gonk be showin' us a new way ta connect wit ALL de spirits o' nature, ta work WIT de spirits, not just be servin' a single loa at a time.
Zen'tabra says: It be difficult at first, ya, mon, but Gonk be showin' us how ta also reach inta de Emerald Dream ta speak wit da spirits and learn from dem directly!
How did the other loa react to this?
Zen'tabra says: De other loa, 'specially Shirvallah, did not much care for dis plan. Dey still be wantin' us ta work just for one o' dem at a time, not wit all de spirits at once. But Gonk had forced dere hands, and dey knew it was de only way ta save de Echo Isles while Zalazane still ruled.
Zen'tabra says: I be tinkin' dat Gonk did not care for de other loa much either. He be teasin' de other loa all de time while we be learnin' from dem.
So, what happened then?
Zen'tabra says: We been workin' wit de spirits for many moons now, mon, but many o' us already knew de forms o' de loa we served before. It not be easy, but de Emerald Dream be a powerful teacher by itself — havin' de spirits demselves also teachin' ya...it hurries tings along.
Zen'tabra says: Dat don't mean 'twas easy keepin' safe from Zalazane. Even wit our new tricks combined wit de loa givin' what help dey could, we lost a few bruddas and sistas over de years ta his voodoo and mindless servants. But we kept de life o' de isles alive, and when Vol'jin and de Darkspears returned, we knew just how to take Zalazane down.
So are the loa still holding to their side of the deal?
Zen'tabra says: Ya, mon, for now. Dey not be too keen on teachin' many more o' our kind, but dey be helpin' us 'long as we be keepin' de life o' de isles flourishin'. When Gonk left after de fall o' Zalazane, he be tellin' us how ta contact him if de other loa don't keep dey end o' de bargain.
Zen'tabra says: I be hopin' it never come ta dat...but just in case, we be openin' up channels wit dat Cenarion Circle group.
Zen'tabra cackles madly
Zen'tabra says: Oh, ya shoulda seen de look on dat night elf's face...
I wish I could have seen an FMV of that encounter! lol A group of Darkspears shape shifted into cool looking animals walking into Moon Glade to address the Cenarion Circle! lol Anyways, now I'm going to get back to writing the next chapter in my Old Zul history, hopefully this will help some of you with your own back stories too!

Zul, I am also interested to hear about how your character has managed to stay alive all these years even though your life was supposed to end hundreds of years earlier. I eagerly await your perfectly reasonable explanation.
Your skin turns a nice shade of blue when you hold your breath like that.

Glad someone shows some interest! You flatter me with your attention :) Well, there are different ways Old Zul could be as old as he is- outliving the general average number of years.
1) The easiest, and the one I'll go with, is that he always wears a Rush'ka mask he found. It is an ancient artifact of the Gurubashi Empire, and it allows him incredible control over troll magicks. The very powers of the Loa, both Voodoo and other, flow through it, and empower the wearer with extreme long life.
2) His maitre tet has always be Bwonsamdi, the Loa of the Dead, and so perhaps Bwonsamdi has never chosen to claim Old Zul yet so that he can instead forever bring about annoyances on Alliance folks that try to troll him.
3) Right now on Earth, the current lifespan could range from 39.5 years in Swaziland to 81 years in Japan and the overall average lifespan would be 67.2 years. Does this mean every human in the real world dies at exactly these ages? Nope. And even a person in Swaziland might beat all odds and see a hundred years, and someone in Japan might not even live a week after birth.
Life spans vary drastically with several factors and variables being key. These variables include genetics, type of diet, availability of food and water, climate, weather, and innumerable other variables. And so, Old Zul could also have always been in the right place at the right time. In my character history, I start off with him about to be smashed by a Sea Giant when Sen'jin saves his life. The whole story could have ended there, but nope, Old Zul survived and does til this day, beating the odds through random chance.
4) Perhaps Old Zul is not even the troll he seems, so if it comforts you to imagine, you can pretend he is a dragon?
5) King Rastakhan of the Zandalar Tribe is a troll and he is over 10,000 years old, and don't forget the old Mogh the Undying out in Stranglethorn.
Again, your attention is flattering, but well deserved. Thanks for getting to know my character better, though I never even heard of yours. :D
Thanks man, edited.
Wait, wasn't this thread longer? I could have sworn there were other posts.
No, you might be thinking of the post from the old boards. This is the first time I ever posted the troll Lore, I heard from a friend of mine though Doop and someone were trolling me, but I guess some of the RPers on the server are looking out for me, because I don't see the post they were talking about.
He made an entirely new post after someone pointed out a flaw in his lore that conflicts with official Blizzard lore.
Nothing in my character's background conflicts with anything in the Lore. If the Lore said that all trolls die at precisely 38 years old, then sure, I'd need to rewrite my character bio, but it makes no such claims.
