Rated Battleground MMR Hotfix

Community Manager
Early on in PvP Season 15, we found and corrected a couple issues that were causing players to reach extremely high Personal Rating when compared to their Matchmaking Rating (MMR), particularly in Rated Battlegrounds. As an unfortunate side-effect of these fixes, some players started experiencing regular games in which they could lose Personal Rating for a loss, but not gain any on a win. This issue quickly resolved itself in Arenas through normal gameplay, but has lingered for a lot longer in Rated Battlegrounds.

To correct this, we’ve applied a hotfix that will increase everyone’s MMR in Rated Battlegrounds by 100. As this change is being applied to everyone (even players who have not yet participated in a Rated BG), there is no change to rankings – we’re just bringing the average up by 100.

This should allow players who were previously still earning 0 rating on wins to once again earn rating normally. As a result, players who were already earning rating normally will start seeing higher rating gains per win and lower rating penalties per loss until their personal rating is once again in line with their MMR.

Again, as this change is being applied to everyone, there should be no real impact on ladders as a result. Ratings will inflate briefly (much like they do as part of our normal rating inflation), but there should be no long-term damage to rankings.

Positive change. Good news. Why 100 though? Current MMR peaks at ~2100. So with 100 MMR it still only peaks at ~2200. Is that ideal? Should we not want 2300, 2400, or even 2500 for tabard an attainable goal?

it's not a peak, it's a flat increase.

if you had 0 mmr before you'll have 100 now.

Interesting. Hopefully this will correct any issues with MMR gains. I hadn't noticed any across various characters but they were probably played less consistently, and too low of a rating to notice.

And that goes against what he said because...?

A flat 100 MMR boost to everyone means that the peak MMR is exactly 100 higher.

I don't think you understand. Before the change MMR had a glass ceiling. It would not rise above ~2100 no matter how many wins. We'll see how it works. So far, so good though. I just hope 2500 is attainable, if not, then further buffs are required.

HOW HAS THIS TAKEN SO LONG?
AND WHY ONLY 100 RATING
2400 IS STILL GOING TO BE UNACHIEVABLE FOR 99.5% OF PLAYERS THIS SEASON.....
HERO CUT OFF WILL MOST LIKELY BE BELOW 2200 STILL

It's incredibly stupid that only five players have achieved over 2400 with the records of 229-6, 297-9, 201-3, 212-27 and 176-7.

This man is correct

Fix arenas too in the meantime. Everyone with a 2400 achieve got it in 2009 and 2700 is harder than r1 glad lol

Hey, Lore.

I can't help but agree with this. Players with W/L ratios like this should be 2700-2800+. The fact that High Warlord / Grand Marshal are once again shaping up to be 'rarer' achievements than 'Hero' this season makes everyone really sad.

Could you please see about whether or not MMRs can be properly inflated, as they have been in the past, to resolve this issue? The +100 MMR bump is certainly a step in the right direction, but I think most of us who understand the problem feel that that bump needs to be closer to +400, if not +600 in order to balance out the spread of players more reasonably.

400 or 600?
Please don't. I played in the Malevolent season when ratings were massively inflated due to cheaters but it wouldn't even compare to a 400 or 600 bump.

Things are sitting at a glass ceiling of ~2100-2200 right now. That's overwhelmingly low ... you agree on that, at least, I hope?

I don't really care 'what' number they pick, as long as someone at Blizzard sits down and says "X% of players should be 2700+, X% of players should be 2400+, X% of players should be 2k+," etc. and MMR is adjusted accordingly to make that a reality.

Maybe I'm jumping the gun before this +100 bump has played out, but I still don't feel like that's going to be enough to have the impact we need to spread the field out on the higher end of things.

How many players, as a %, do we feel should be where the 0.001% are right now?
