Gear Changes in Patch 5.4.8

Blizzard Employee
Gear changes are coming! First, in Patch 5.4.8 (which is currently in testing on the PTR), all upgradable epic items introduced to the game in Patch 5.4 will be given the option to upgrade 2 more times for a grand total of 16 item levels. This change will be applied to all items found on the Timeless Isle and in Siege of Orgrimmar. For instance, if you have an item level 553 Greatsword of Pride’s Fall and its Upgrade Level is 2/2 making it item level 561, once the new patch goes live it will display 2/4 and allow you the opportunity to bump it up to item level 569. Whether you’re working on a newly boosted character or progressing through Siege of Orgrimmar, we hope this change will provide you with the extra punch you need to take down your foes.

Second, we are also adding a new token called Deeds of Valor which will cost 3000 Timeless Coins, and can be used to grant your character 100 Valor Points. Players who wish to purchase the new token can do so by visiting Mistweaver Ai on the Timeless Isle next to the Celestial Court. Keep in mind, these tokens won’t allow you to go above the current weekly cap on Valor, but they do provide you an extra option to gain the points you may need so you can upgrade your gear.

[update] Thanks everyone for your feedback, we will be bumping up the ilvl of all Garrosh Heirlooms by +8 in 5.4.8, since they are not upgradeable with Valor. The intent of the 5.4.8 VP upgrade change is to let people continue to progress, and we don’t want those who are using one of the Garrosh BoA weapons as their primary weapon to feel like they need to go get a brand new weapon due to this change.

Will this Deed of Valor be soulbound or account bound?

So you're trying to buy more time before the expansion goes live so it doesn't seem like nothing has happened for a year.

It's not going to work.

This is a joke right? I have to go start valor capping weekly again. -_-

Well this is... interesting.

Or useless? Looks like they're getting desperate for ideas to keep people subbed without actually providing new content. I don't think adding in 2 additional upgrade levels on gear is the way to do it. People don't want to upgrade old gear. They want to get something new.

It will help those few raiders who aren't so sick of SoO that they're still working on progression but that's about it.

And considering how stupidly easy it is to VP cap, adding in a way to purchase it via Timeless Coins does nothing. Far easier to get the VP running random dungeons than grinding through mobs on TI.

Well, that'll give me something to do for about a month.

Which is likely the point, I suppose.

edit: are they adding another 8 ilvls to the Garrosh Heirlooms?

It's basically a SoO nerf.

How about the 1,000 valor earning capped per week. Do we still have that?

Does this include the legendary cloak? It was added in 5.4 but is either SoO or timeless isle, so it's a gray area.

Makes sense in light of what Watcher said on that item upgrades worked best when unlocked in the middle of a tier, to give a boost to people still progressing.

Will the upgrade cap increase also apply to the legendary cloaks?

Also, can you share details about the Gaze of the Black Prince and Heart of the Valorous buffs that were datamined?

This is a really terrible idea.

- Adds to the grind, even for players who are "finished" with the grind. Very few players enjoy capping VP every week. It's tedious and feels like a chore. This just extends the period we have to do so. Do not want.

- If you want to nerf SoO, just nerf it. These tiny subtle nerfs through grindy upgrades are a bad, bad idea.

- The token purchaseable with Timeless Coins is WAY overcosted. I'm sure there are a lot of people with a lot of coins, but I'm sure there's also many like me who saw no point grinding them and have 10k or fewer.

I'd be okay with this change under certain circumstances though. Increasing VP rewards across the board. 100 from 5mans, 200 from H Scenarios, 60 per boss kill sounds about right. Secondly, reduce the cost of the token from 3k coins to 1k - 1.5k. Something affordable to help supplement your natural VP gains.

I'm really annoyed at the thought of having to grind VP again on my main. I thought I was done with that garbage finally, and you're moving away from that tedious design in WoD. Don't make this regrettable decision now.

Blizzard to pvpers in 5.4:7: go grind out a 550 prideful set and you can FINALLY be geared for world pvp against pve'ers.

Blizzard to pvp'ers in 5.4.8: Suckers!

Any chance we can tack ToT gear in there so we can upgrade rune as well? Since it hasn't been nerfed, may as well allow it to keep pace.
