Topic What happened to Discipline?
I'm healing in Cata and it freaking sucks.
I have no Base Heal that actually works.
Heal = 3 Second Cast and CRIT is ONLY 10k.
Greater Heal = WAY to long of a cast... People die in that casting time
Flash Heal = Way to much mana cost. Sucks now.
What do I use as my base heal? I use Penance, and Shields constantly.
You're almost right.
Key to success as Discipline:
- Use heal as much as possible. DPS don't need to be topped off immediately; just when you can spare a second.
-Greater Heal spam is almost mandatory in Heroics- at least for now.
- Use inner Focus procs on Prayer of Healing/Flash/Binding/Greater. Just macro it. Whatever.
- Disc really, really, really struggles with AoE damage - Espeically AoE burst. Renew comes into play when people are spread out. Divine Hymn needs to be brought up to Tranquility's level.
-and use Flash Heal when tanks are critically low. It might very rarely be used on a DPS.
-make sure Prayer of Mending is always up
-use your CDs as you need them. Don't be afraid to ask the tank to wait if you need them to come back up.
Greater Heal and Flash Heal cost the same amount of mana. Except with GHeal, people can actually die while casting it. I can literally go and take a piss and be back before that heal is done casting.
Couple problem spots are in your spec.
Drop Reflective Shield, Borrowed Time, and Focused Will.
Pick up Divine Fury and Inspiration in Holy.
You desperately need the reduced casting time on Heal and Greater Heal,
and Inspiration noticeably reduces incoming tank damage.
Assuming 5-man healing, if the tank is taking moderate sustained damage,
I use PW:S -> Penance -> Healx3 -> Repeat; it's a low-impact rotation manawise,
and lets you take advantage of your Strength of Soul talent.
If the rotation isn't keeping up with the damage, replace Heal with Greater Heal as needed.
Use Inner Focus or Power Infusion to cast Greater Heal whenever possible.
Use Flash Heal only in dire emergencies.
Ask yourself whether the extra second will be the difference between life and death.
In most cases, you're better off using literally anything else to spot heal.
General note for early Cata healing regardless of spec:
If you're in a 5-man, even when you get to heroics, and you're doing trash,
and it seems like the group and/or the tank is just taking nearly unhealable damage,
there's a very good chance that the problem isn't you or your healing or your spec.
Fact is that a lot of things aren't intended to be healed through right now;
and if you do manage to heal through them, you'll be OoM afterwards.
It falls to us as healers to take the dignity shot and tell the group,
"hey, listen, i really can't sustain this kind of healing in Cata; what can we do to soften this pull up ?"
Taking the time to split pulls up with CC, to interrupt spells that do a lot of damage or disable the healer,
to move mobs out of static AoE abilities so that melee and tanks aren't standing in them;
these kind of things make the difference between drinking every single pull,
and only drinking after bosses. The healing model is different now,
but the way in which the entire structure of instancing is different exacerbates healing issues,
and makes them appear far, far worse than they actually are.
Wow.. above post helps immensely... anyhow.. CC is your friend. I like the almost constant bubble you can keep on the tank. Here is a little quote that I like to hold true "If the tank dies, its the healer's fault, if the dps dies its the dps' fault." I extremely dislike the baddie dps that complain about not being topped off in instances, they clearly do not understand the new healing mechanics. After a few trial runs on some instance and learning the mechanics of the mobs and which has priority over another to CC.. also another thing that would help, if each class used their own cc.. Hex, Root, Interrupts, Fear, Etc.. Thus said.. healing is still difficult, but rather fun.
Wow... Thank you so much for taking the time to post this for me. I'm going to try this out.
Just hit 85 and ready to re-do talents and what not. Once again, thank you.

Reforge your gear. Anything that doesnt have spirit on it, reforge it on. If it has hit, reforge that. If not try to keep your haste/crit/mastery about even while doing this. Replace the gear that has no spirit with healer gear as soon as possible.
PW:S is not weak or expensive relative to other heals.
Glyphed, the combined effect of its heal and its absorb are equivalent to a non-crit Flash Heal,
at about half the mana cost, with no cast time... and while the absorb portion can't crit,
PW:S scales directly with Mastery; the only heal besides Prayer of Healing
that scales with Mastery independently of your Crit rating.
PW:S also procs Rapture, and Rapture's cooldown is shorter than the duration of Weakened Soul,
so if you're not using Heal to reduce the duration of Weakened Soul,
and you don't have other targets to cast and break Shields on, you're losing Rapture procs.
PW:S also allows you to get the Renewed Hope effect on targets you haven't stacked Grace on.
In reality, if PW:S was any more powerful than it is right now,
it would be wildly out of scale with the rest of your healing arsenal.
You're doing it wrong. There should be no "Shields" plural unless you're expecting massive AoE damage soon. Shield and PoM on the tank and spam heal. If the tank gets low, you use Inner Focus for a free Greater Heal every 45 seconds.
You should be using Power Infusion, Power Word: Barrier, and Pain Suppression regularly to mitigate damage or increase your healing ability. Flash Heal should be almost never used - it is to save the tank if it is literally impossible to do so any other way.
Your groupmates should be using crowd control religiously.
