Did you play ret in TBC and Classic?

I'm talking about in 2.2 and earlier in TBC and classic, I wanna see people who were actually doing it back in the day no matter what people said. Tell us your stories and journeys since then.

Edit: Also try to refrain from QQ about it now, and maximize the nostalgia and sillyness.

Played in classic, back in the good 'ol days where 90% of the time playing a paladin was spent watching porn.

Judgement was the only instant attack a full Ret Paladin had.

5k health was actually a lot of HP.

Actually needed to gear for some int and spell power.

Being able to actually outlast an opponent rather than piling on some damage.

Would you say the current model is more productive now then back then and viable?

Judgements consumeing Seals was fairly fun, this of course isn't the paladin I played in vanilla, but I can tell you I did. He was a prot paladin that spent 80% of the time running lowbies through old dungeons.

Mmmm..So much utility....

Tough to say when comparing Cata Ret to the old Ret since it feels like they are from two entirely different games now. That just goes to show how much WoW has changed from release.

Ret now is a lot more interactive when it comes to being able to put out some damage but majority of it is still RNG reliant.

Example: Classic damage was dependent on SoC procs and auto attacks. Judgement damage scaled so horribly and was so minuscule it's hardly worth mentioning. It also cost a good amount of mana and at the time Ret had some terrible mp regen so it was not worth spamming. Exorcism and Holy Wrath could only be cast on undead. So that just left you with Soc and auto attacks again.

Now in BC and WotLK things started to shift into more controlled damage territory with a couple of points that needed to be ironed out. (But I wouldn't say I was totally satisfied with Ret DPS then either because it required a good amount of TOT to stack vengeance and a stationary target for Cons spam etc)

But with the redesign in Cata it's sort of like they're starting over again. We are now reliant on an RNG proc from auto attacks (Hand of Light, Art of War) similar to how we had to rely on SoC. The only saving grace is that Crusader Strike actually does some OK damage while Judgement is once again pitiful in comparison and HW/Consecration being situational.

It's possible to pop a bunch of %%*! and put out some nice damage but the spike damage hardly reflects our overall DPS. GoAK isn't even working properly as far as I know.

I think it's definitely viable there are just a few things that need to be worked out.

I miss those days partly. It was fun being able to wade into the fray with no fear save for mages and the occasional Lock.

I loved being able to thrash rogues and warriors alike. Totally felt like I was my own little boss fight haha. It was also fun watching rogues kill themselves to Retribution Aura while I was stunlocked.

I miss Holy Light being 480 mana and healing you for 75% of your life bar or more.

I miss offtanking in instances like we used to be able to. It was amazing and fun to play as a hybrid, but goodness the 5 minute buffs seemed to run out rather quickly. >.>

Utility and skills is what I really miss about this class for the most part. I know we still have some of them but it just doesn't feel the same anymore. Nothing about the class does for that matter.

I played in BC.

Back with all the resealing and horribleness, of course, I was a complete noob back then and had no idea what I was doing.

But bg's were fun. Now they're terrible.

Hmm

I agree with BG's and PvP in general. I loved it in Vanilla and it was alright for me in BC but I quit PvP after Season 2 of Arena started. I felt it began getting stupid because classes were just getting crushed left, right and center and it was bull@#$% for PvE.

That's when I began resenting PvP in general because in Vanilla I loved how I could do both and they were their own little worlds. Then those worlds entwined in BC and it just screwed everything up.

I would rather play ret with 100% RNG then play ret again like it was in vanilla.

Bingo.

Human Paladin was my first character about 8 months before BC came out, played him to 67 then quit WoW for years. Retribution was cool to me when I played. I liked that idea of punishing the heretic and being righteous. But when it came to pugs? Forget it, you're not getting picked, ever. If you do, you were healing like as not. I remember spending so long getting the Epic two hander from ZF, and using polearms and what not.

Now after years of absence, I've started fresh and began exploring the tank aspects of the Paladin. Looks like I made a good choice too.

Resealing every 8 seconds was quite possibly the best change, cant imagine how i even went through that nowadays.

I liked having one judge and 3-4 short seals that altered the judgements effect..

It's alot smoother then having to take a GCD to cast a clunky seal to be slightly more defensive imo.

I didn't stick with ret when you had to seal and judge because it was FCKING STUPID.

Proud to be a Wrath Baby.

I played Ret in classic. I have enough stories to tell that Lao Shan Lung could be killed more than 10 times before I'm dome.

Needless to say, I had fun back then. Mostly because of PvP and PvP buddies.

The class has... definitely changed since then.

Will give all my gold to have old PvP and old PvP buddies back. D:

I remember when playing a Paladin didn't mean you were actually beating someone, just getting hit so much they run out of mana and you auto-attacked them to death.

I've been burning with courage and justice! Also spending more time on the consoles than WoW. That and so many fun anime to watch.

Lots of the old crowd left. D: Less and less people showing interest and more and more people trying to get me to go to off-topic. So my random threads mostly are on my realm forums. They're mostly full of gaming/anime news though. So now I'm doing the horrible thing known as Archaeology, listening various music and alt-tabbing to read forums. Also reading the forums when I'm not playing. Looking for fun threads to post in.

What have you been up to?

Like Lao Shan Lung was ever hard or long :P

Well he's certainly not hard! It's just so freaking long! Him and his darn Azure version. Smacking his gut forever until he gets to the gates and then dealing that ONE blow to kill him because he takes ages to get there! And then NEVER GETTING THAT DARN RUBY AFTER 30 KILLS! AHIFANISNFDAKDNFBNSDIFBS. It's like the freaking Skypiercers from Tri. THOSE DARN THINGS DON'T EXIST. D:
