Running WoW shuts my interent off

I'm having an issue where WoW is knocking me completely offline and forcing me to do a hard restart of my modem just to reconnect. This isn't an occasional issue either. It happens every single time I launch WoW after starting my computer. I can fart around on the interent with my browser or any other online program (yahoo messenger, skype, other MMOs, etc) just fine for hours on end but the minute I launch WoW for the first time after starting my computer, it knocks my AT&T DSL offline. Its really wierd too because I've had AT&T befor with my old computer like 2 years ago and never had connection issues but since I moved in with my sister to take care of my nieces & using her AT&T its doing it.

Here's what I'm talking about the steps I go through that cause the knocking my internet offline:
Start computer
Open web browser or random online program (everything runs)
Launch WoW
Enter password & authenticator number
Enter character select screen
Pick character from the character select screen
press "Enter World"
Get full load bar
DISCONNECTED FROM INTERENT
Hard restart of modem
Open web browser or random online program (everything runs)
Launch WoW
Enter password & authenticator number
DISCONNECTED FROM INTERENT or enter character select screen (seems to be a 50/50 shot at that one)
Pick character from the character select screen
press "Enter World"
Get full load bar
Hard restart of modem
Open web browser or random online program (everything runs)
Launch WoW
Enter password & authenticator number
DISCONNECTED FROM INTERENT or enter character select screen (seems to be a 50/50 shot at that one)
Pick character from the character select screen
press "Enter World"
Get full load bar
Enter world with that character

Honestly I don't know if its my internet setting or if its WoW or a combination of both but something screwy is going on that is causing only 1 program (WoW) to knock me competey offline forcing me to hard restart my modem just to reconnect. Can someone shed some insight on what to do to fix this very frustrating and annoying problem?

Hi Dionysian,

If you happen to have a 2Wire router/modem, try to change the Wireless Mode from 802.11b/g to 802.11b

2Wire's support site shows how to do this:

Let's try changing the speed of the network card. That sometimes helps:

  • Click on Start.

  • Click on Control Panel.

  • Double click on the System icon (in Windows XP, you may need to click Switch to Classic View on the left hand side of the screen).

  • Select the Hardware tab.

  • Click on Device Manager.

  • Expand the section labeled Network Adapters.

  • Right click on your network card and select Properties.

  • Click on the Advanced Tab

  • Click on Speed and Duplex (or Media Type or Connection Type)

  • Change the value to 10 or 100 Mbps Full Duplex

The problem was I had 2 network adapters trying to run because my old IPS (Clearwire) had me do some funky thing that I hadn't remember that they did until you told me to do this. I just uninstalled that driver and kept the NVIDIA one on there. Hopefully tomorrow I won't have this issue so we'll find out then...or if I have to restart my computer tonight for whatever reason which I doubt.

Ok so my other connection problem is more of a minor annoyance than this was. Whenever I'm alt tabbed and land somewhere I get knocked off WoW and only WoW. Is this a bug reports type of issue or is there something I can do besides not being alt tabbed....really hoping "not being alt tabbed" is not the answer since there are time when I just fly somewhere and check email, youtube, mmo-champ, wowhead, these forums, or go to Pandora while I'm killing time.

Ive been having almost the same issue since the release of cata. I can log on fine, but, at random times during play, The game stutters/lags for about 10 secs then completely shuts down my internet. From there I have to reboot my computer so it can find the wireless signal again. Im on a Dell inspiron 1525 laptop (not the best option for online gaming I know.) running wireless on a linksys WRT54G. The only thing i have done as far as router options is change the Wireless mode from, mixed, to B.. Still having the same issue and have danced around forums as much as I can mentally endure.. Would love to hang with friends and enjoy wow like i did before the release of cata. Any help would be much appreciated. I also play in full/windowed mode.

linksys WRT54G

I'd check for the latest firmware from Linksys, Miidknight:

I play fullscreen and when I just went to Windowed (Fullscreen) I dropped down to 8 FPS instead of the 25ish that I normally get and everything was really really really dark.

Hello davidhc, I'm running into similar problems with my install of WoW. I just upgraded from an old machine running windows xp to a 64-bit dell inspiron 580. I also have AT&T DSL running a speedstream 5100 modem. I can get to the character selection screen, and then get a disconnect that knocks me off the internet, requiring a hard restart. I originally thought my problem may have been due to the fact that I didn't re-install WoW on the new machine, but rather copied my backed-up files to the new machine and ran the game that way. But after seeing these posts, I think its more of a configuration problem. My device manager currently shows 2 network adapters; a broadcom netlink gigabit ethernet and a DW1525 (802.11n) WLAN PCIe Card. Do you have any recommendations?

Are you wireless or wired with an ethernet cable, Grummy?

Have you tried setting the Broadcom adapter to either 10 Mbps Full Duplex or 100 Mbps Full Duplex?

Having a similar issue with AT&T 2Wire as well. I tried the fixes within the router to no avail. I will try the fixes on Windows 7. Curious how switching between 10 and 100 Full Duplex would fix and issue that seems to be at the router/modem level?

I am also using AT&T 2wire and getting the same damn thing even with just my internet in general. I called them twice and they said my modem is fine, and I even tried the tips above but no go at all. :( Idk what to do. I had the same thing with my wireless and switched to ethernet and that took care of the problems months ago, but now even with my ethernet its doing this. I was fine all last night and then bam tonight its done. Help!
