5.2 Guild XP guide: How to earn it

Overview: What is Guild XP?

Guild XP is used to level up the guild you are in. Guilds start at level 1 and can move up to level 25 (and eventually level 30 sometime at an unannounced point in the future) by earning enough Guild XP. The amount of Guild XP required to level up your guild, and the perks you can earn at each level, are listed here:
http://www.wowpedia.org/Guild_advancement

Whenever you do an activity that qualifies for Guild XP, your current guild will earn that much Guild XP.

Starting with patch 5.0.4, there is no longer any cap on how much Guild XP your guild can earn each day. You could theoretically advance from level 1 to level 25 in one day if your guild was extremely productive.

You can hit the j key (by default) to see your guild information screen. This screen shows what level your guild is, how much Guild XP has been earned so far today, and the guild's progress towards its next guild level. Perks are also shown at the bottom.

You can right-click on your chat tab and select "Settings" under Filters, then click "Other" and then select the box to show Guild XP gains. (Default color is blue.) Then you'll see a chat line whenever you do something that grants Guild XP.

What about Guild Levels 26-30?

Originally Mists of Pandaria was going to allow guilds to level up from 25 to 30. There are even traces of this still visible in the game, such as listings for Realm First Level 30 Guild.

However, in the Best Buy Dev interview (http://www.mmo-champion.com/content/2932-Best-Buy-Developer-Q-A), the developers stated:

"We are totally open to increasing guild levels and the associated rewards but only when the game feels like it needs more of that content. A large number of guilds are still nowhere near level 25 so Mists did not feel like a good fit to add more guild levels."

How to Earn Guild XP

The following five activities earn Guild XP:

1. Turning in quests -- see below.
2. Killing a raid or dungeon instance boss when in a guild group -- see next post, and amounts in post after next.
3. Arena wins when in a guild group -- see next post.
4. Rated Battlegrounds wins when in a guild group -- see next post.
5. Earning honor in battlegrounds -- see next post.

No other activities earn Guild XP. Leveling your professions or reputation, archaeology, killing world mobs or rare mobs, earning achievements, clearing trash or mini-bosses in dungeons or raids, grinding mobs -- all of that counts for zero Guild XP.

(Outdoor raid bosses will need to be confirmed. Previously they awarded nothing, but they're a bigger deal in MoP, and there are some new systems.)

Source 1: Guild XP from Quests

Prior to 5.0.4, 25% of the amount of XP you earned (or would earn if you weren't max level) was also earned as Guild XP by your guild. This meant that low-level characters contributed nearly nothing to guild leveling.

Starting with 5.0.4, the amount of Guild XP for quest turn-ins by low-level characters is similar to high-level. The exact formula appears to be 60k Guild XP for every level-appropriate quest. (Many thanks to Bigcheif, Kvöthe, and Nyssa on pages 7-8 of this thread for providing this data.)

It appears that any quests that are too low for your character to earn XP will earn zero Guild XP.

Source 2: Killing Bosses / Guild Groups

For boss kills, you need a certain number of guild members in your group or raid to get credit as a guild group.

  • For all 5-person dungeons from (vanilla, BC, Wrath, Cataclysm, & MoP), you need 3+ guild members (used to be 4+ prior to 4.0.6).
  • For all 10-person content (Temple of Ahn'Qirar, AQ10 formerly AQ20), Karazhan, Zul'Aman, plus all Lich King and Cataclysm raids in 10-person mode), you need 8+ guild members.
  • Rated battlegrounds are now (as of 4.0.6) for 10-person pre-formed groups only, and these require 8+ guild members.
  • Arena teams must be 100% composed of guild members in order to be a guild group.
  • For Burning Crusade 25-person content (Gruul's Lair, Magtheridon's Lair, Serpentshrine Cavern, Mount Hyjal raid, Tempest Keep, Black Temple, and Sunwell Plateau), you need 8+ guild members.
  • For Lich King and Cataclysm 25-person content, you need 20+ guild members.
  • For classic 40-person content (Molten Core, Blackwing Lair, and Temple of Ahn'Qiraj, AQ40), you need 10+ guild members.

If you are in a guild group, the icon in the upper left of the mini-map will show your guild crest, and the tooltip will confirm that you are earning Guild XP for boss kills.

If you are not in a guild group, the icon has a red background. If you are not in a guild group, you will earn zero Guild XP, zero guild rep, and cannot earn guild achievements.

NOTE: When you are in a guild group, it is also possible to earn guild achievements, such as for completing the dungeon or raid the first time. Note that for the dungeon/raid completion guild achievements, you only need to kill the final boss while in a guild group. Party or raid members don't even have to engage or tap the final boss -- as long as they're in the instance, you'll get the achievement when the last boss is killed if you're in a guild group.

The reputation level of a guild member is irrelevant, nor does it matter if they've been in the guild for a day or a year. There are no individual caps that prevent a person from continuing to earn Guild XP or contributing to guild groups. So even if a guild member has maximized their guild rep for the week, they can still earn Guild XP for their guild.

Note that party/raid members do NOT need to engage, tap, or kill the boss in order to earn Guild XP. So you can have two people duo Molten Core, for example, with 8 more guild members AFK by the door. All ten members will still earn Guild XP for the guild.

Source 3: Arena Wins

Guild arena activity did not earn any Guild XP prior to patch 4.1. As of patch 4.1, winning an arena match earns 138,800 Guild XP per person.

2v2: 277,600 total earned (138,800 x 2)
3v3: 416,400 total earned (138,800 x 3)
5v5: 694,000 total earned (138,800 x 5)

NOTE: You must have ALL arena team members be in the same guild! A 5v5 with 4 guild members from one guild and one PUG earns zero Guild XP.

Losing an arena match earns nothing.

NOTE: Needs to be confirmed that this has not changed in 5.0.4.

Source 4: Rated Battlegrounds Wins

A guild group winning a rated battleground earns Guild XP. You must have at least 8 guild members in the rated battleground to earn Guild XP.

Losing an RBG earns nothing.

(I need data for how much Guild XP is earned. If you have any info, please contribute! This section to be updated.)

Source 5: Honor earned in Tol Barad, Wintergrasp, and regular battlegrounds

Each honorable kill (that is, each player character from the opposing faction killed) in Tol Barad, Wintergrasp, or in any battleground (AB, WSG, AV, etc.) earns 1 honor point (1.1 if you have the perk for 10% bonus honor points).

Each honor point earned in turn earns 10 Guild XP.

The number of honor kills can vary tremendously. Depending on how actively you fight and your time spent defending versus destroying towers versus attacking, and how long in total the match lasts, you could earn anywhere from zero to several thousand honor kills.

The amount of Guild XP generated in this way is typically very modest, and will not contribute much to leveling your guild.

(I need to verify if world/city PVP also award Guild XP for honor kills.)

NOTE: Needs to be confirmed that this has not changed in 5.0.4.

Specifics: Cataclysm Dungeons

Dungeon boss kills award the following amount of Guild XP, per person in the party:

If you are in a group with five guild members: (125% awarded)
46,500 Heroic boss -- all 9 original Cataclysm heroics plus ZA & ZG & HoT
31,000 Normal 85 boss -- Grim Batol, Lost City, Halls of Origination
22,750 Normal 81-84 boss -- Stonecore, Vortex Pinnacle
14,250 Normal 80-81 boss -- Blackrock Caverns, Throne of the Tides

If you are in a group with four guild members: (100% awarded)
37,200 Heroic boss -- all 9 original Cataclysm heroics plus ZA & ZG
24,800 Normal 85 boss -- Grim Batol, Lost City, Halls of Origination
18,200 Normal 81-84 boss -- Stonecore, Vortex Pinnacle
11,400 Normal 80-81 boss -- Blackrock Caverns, Throne of the Tides

If you are in a group with three guild members: (50% awarded)
18,600 Heroic boss -- all 9 original Cataclysm heroics plus ZA & ZG
12,400 Normal 85 boss -- Grim Batol, Lost City, Halls of Origination
9,100 Normal 81-84 boss -- Stonecore, Vortex Pinnacle
5,700 Normal 80-81 boss -- Blackrock Caverns, Throne of the Tides

(Note that prior to 4.0.6, there was no difference between the Guild XP awarded to a four person group versus a five person group, and three person groups could not earn Guild XP at all. As of 4.2, five person groups started to earn 125%, and 3 person groups started to earn half.)

* For a five person group, each heroic dungeon boss kill is a total of 232.5k Guild XP (46.5k per person).

* For a four person group, it's 148.8k Guild XP total per heroic dungeon boss kill.

* For a three person group, it's 55.8k Guild XP total per heroic dungeon boss kill.

(Remember, as far as Guild XP goes: Trash awards nothing. Completion awards nothing. It's just boss kills that count, and only if you're in a group that has 3, 4, or 5 guild members.)

That means that heroic runs can really vary in terms of Guild XP awarded, depending on the number of guild members and number of bosses. Here are some examples:

* Worst case: Heroic Vortex Pinnacle (3 bosses), with 3 guild members: 167.4k Guild XP.

* Best case: Heroic Halls of Origination (full clear of 7 bosses), with 5 guild members: 1,627.5k Guild XP.

* Middle case: Heroic Grim Batol (4 bosses), with 4 guild members: 595.2k Guild XP.

Heroic boss kills are worth a lot more than boss kills from normal dungeons (it's a 50% bonus over a level 85 boss on normal). But, running a 5-guild member normal is generally worth more than a 3-person run of a heroic.

Take, for example, Normal Blackrock Caverns. With 5 bosses at 11.4k each, that's 228k Guild XP earned if it's a 4-person run. For a 5-person run, it's 356.3k Guild XP. That's worth more than any 3-person heroic except Heroic Halls of Origination.

Specifics: Cataclysm Raids:

Each Cataclysm raid boss is worth 78,700 Guild XP per person. (Prior to a hot fix implemented on Tuesday, February 22, it was 25,700 Guild XP per person.)

Heroic bosses award the same amount.

For a guild run of 10 people, that's 787,000 Guild XP per boss.

For a guild run of 25 people, that's 1,967,500 Guild XP per boss.

(Note that you can still be in a guild group with fewer than the max raid size. Remember, a 10 person raid can have 2 non-guild members. Each of the 8 people present would earn 78,700 Guild XP for the guild. For a 25-person raid, you can as few as 20 people from the same guild to count as a guild group for Guild XP and Raid Achievement purposes.)

Some Tier11, Tier12 and Tier13 encounters have more than one boss, and award credit for multiple boss kills.

All Guild XP amounts listed below are per raider in your guild (but only if it's a guild group of 8+ for 10-person or 20+ for 25-person).

Baradin Hold

Argaloth: 78,700
Occu'thar: 78,700
Alizabal: 78,700

Tier 11

Blackwing Descent
Magmaw: 78,700
Omnotron: 78,700 x 4 = 314,800 NOTE: Highest value encounter in the game
Maloriak: 78,700
Chimaeron: 78,700
Atramedes: 78,700
Nefarian: Please let me know
Sinestra: Please let me know

Throne of the Four Winds
Council of Wind: 78,700 x 3 = 236,100
Al'Akir: 78,700

Bastion of Twilight
Halfus: 78,700
Valiona & Theralion: 78,700 x 2 = 157,400
Ascendant Council: 78,700 (should be x 5, really...but no, just x 1)
Cho'Gall: 78,700

Tier 12: Firelands

All encounters here are 78,700 each.

Tier 13: Dragon Soul

All boss fights count as 78,700 EXCEPT the heroic version of Morchok, which counts as 78,700x2 (normal is just 78,700).

Older Dungeon/Heroic/Raid Content:

Vanilla

NOTE: More data is needed for dungeon and raid boss kills. Please contribute!

Blackfathom Depths (4 person group):
650 for Gamaroo
665 for Twilight Lord Kelris / Aku'mai / Old Serra'kis

Blackrock Depths (4 person group):
2725 Ambassador Flamelosh and 7 dwarves
2815 Magnus and Emperor Dagran Thaurissa

Burning Crusade

BC raid bosses (Kara, Zul'Aman, Gruuls, Mags, SSC, TK, BT, Sunwell) award 6,835 Guild XP per character per boss. With 10 toons, that's 68,350 Guild XP.

BC Dungeons: Heroic Ramparts/Blood Furnace/Shattered Halls (4-person): 10,148 Guild XP per guild member, or 12,685 for 5-person. (For some reason, the fFirst boss of Blood Furnace gave slightly less --12,562.)

More data needed for BC dungeon bosses on normal and heroic.

Lich King

Normal boss kills in Trial of Champions dungeon (4 person group):
7,350 Guild XP per player (plus 18 guild rep, 5 honor points)

Heroic boss kills in Trial of Champions dungeon (4 person group):
17,400 Guild XP per player (plus 42 guild rep, 6 honor points, 1 Champion's Seal)

Need:
Normal dungeons per boss kill for other LK dungeons
Heroic dungeons per boss kill for other LK dungeons

For 10-person raids (such as Sartharion, and the four bosses in Wintergrasp), the boss kill awards 14,600 Guild XP. For a full group of 10, that's 146k Guild XP.

(To be confirmed: 25-person boss kills award the same amount? Heroic also?)

Specifics: Daily Quests

Cataclysm Daily Quests
Dailies in Cataclysm offer the following Guild XP values (which is just the personal XP divided by 4):

NOTE: Needs to be confirmed that this has not changed in 5.0.4 -- I think these are all just 60k now.

17,350 Cooking, Fishing, Jewelcrafting, & Tol Barad dailies
17,250 Twilight Highlands group daily: "Bring Down the High Shaman"
13,800 Twilight Highlands: All other dailies
13,725 Deepholm: "Glop, Son of Glop" or "The Restless Brood"
10,975 Deepholm: All other dailies
10,975 Ramkehan: "Fire in the Sky"
8,238 Ramkehan: "Thieving Little Pluckers"

Lich King Daily Quests
17,350 Dalaran Fishing daily
13,012 Dalaran Cooking daily
5,512 Typical level 80 dailies such as King of the Mountain, Argent Tourney dailies, etc.

Vanilla Daily Quests
13,000 Cape of Stranglethorn: "Gurubashi Challenge"

Note that the Dalaran fishing daily is worth exactly as much as the Orgrimmar/Stormwind fishing daily.

Since 5.0.4 removes the daily cap for questing, in theory you could hit every single daily quest in order to maximize Guild XP gain.

I don't believe the 3 of 5, 4 of 5 and 5 of 5 guild members for a dungeon work the way you've got listed. 3 of 5 awards 50% of the normal xp, not an extra 50% So for heroic Cata dungeon bosses it'd be half of the 37.2k, so 18.6k 4o f 5 awards the amounts you listed in the post, so 37.2k, and 5 of 5 is 125% of normal, so each boss awards 46.5k

You both are correct.

A single person would gain 18.6k of XP, but since it is a three person group, multiply that number by three to get 55.8k XP that the entire group earned towards the daily cap.

The same style of math is applied to the four and five man groups. He is saying the guild as a whole gets a total of X experience for the kill, not a character contributes that much XP to the guild.

Exactly.

Let's say that you were in a dungeon where a boss kill gives 10k Guild XP (just to make the math easier). From the point of view of the entire guild, here's what's earned:

3 people = 10k * 3 * 0.5 = 15k Guild XP total (5k per person)
4 people = 10k * 4 * 1 = 40k Guild XP total (10k per person)
5 people = 10k * 5 * 1.25 = 62.5k Guild XP total (12.5k per person)

So its looking like there is no point to running the dungeons with level appropriate characters. All that matters is getting as many people to 85 asap.

Sucks that all the low level players who joined our guild can't really contribute at all to the guild-level.
