Recruiting new members - help with macro?
|
I'm an Officer in a guild that is in need of new members. The thing is, I don't really know how to make a recruitment macro... >.<
We would like to run heroics within the guild and eventually begin raiding. We also don't mind if people want to join who are just leveling. Could anyone give me some advice on what might sound good? =/ |

<Guild name> is recruiting members of all levels and classes. We are looking into doing some end game heroics and raids, and are in need of members to join our ranks.
Thats a base, you can add or take anything from it. |

just dont do the generic we have 7 bank tabs and are a level 99 guild. i see these way to often in trade chat and just think its sad.

Hah, thanks for that, I didn't think to say "members of all levels and classes". I kept typing different things up and then thinking, "That sounds ridiculous... *delete*"
So no mentioning of level at all? I know it might be a pain to see it now but don't most people want to join a guild that is at least a little leveled? Or avoid that? And yeah, we don't mention guild bank tabs. =) |

I don't know about most people, but I for one don't mention guild level at all unless it comes up while I'm having that all important first conversation with a recruit. I'm not looking for people who just want to be in a guild because it can offer them x perks. I'm looking for people who want to help make the guild better and who know that the guild level will go up in time regardless of where it is now. In fact I've turned people down who wanted to join when their first question in response to a recruitment macro is "wut lvl" in part because they can't be bothered to use real words, and more importantly because I want someone who is at least interested in what the guild is about overall. Also consider advertising what kind of player you are looking for. Is it casual, hardcore, or something in-between, do you prefer mature players or is the environment made up of younger players? These things matter! |

advertising what guild rank you are normally only gets you the type of free loaders that want a free ride via the exp bonus.

All macros must mention 3 things.
1. The amount of bank tabs you have. 2. The level your guild is. 3. If you have an awesome, epic, leet or otherwise cool-looking tabard. On a more serious note: The base message provided above by Dreknathal is good. I'd add a few things in there depending on the type of guild you are building. In your case, since you want to eventually raid and hence will be recruiting raiders or aspiring raiders -- I would consider adding a date when you expect to be able to raid, or something like "would like to begin raiding within 45 days." It also wouldn't hurt to hint at a possible raid schedule like "2 nights per week, 3 hours per night." Also, being a guild who is in the building phase, make sure you recruit people willing to stick it out and help build the guild. Not people who are looking to raid later tonight. :) |

<Guild name> is recruiting members of all levels and classes. We are looking into doing some end game heroics and raids, and are in need of members to join our ranks. When they are offered the recruitment they will see the guild level. Also they should join your guild not for the perks but for your guild's general philosophy. That way it is more likely they will find friends and stay. |

Good point about the level thing. When I made my macro I left it out.
Here is what I ended up with: <Guild Name> is recruiting members of all levels and classes. We would like to begin running scheduled heroics - and eventually Cata raids - two nights a week, Fridays and Saturdays. PST for more info. I've put it out there three times now and haven't received even one response. I'm going to keep with it but it's frustrating. Even people who are unhappy in their guilds are reluctant to leave now because of guild rep which makes it even harder to pick people up. *sigh* It's either that or my message is bad. =/ It's hard to give a date for anything when recruitment is like nil. Like a catch-22 - we can't seem to get any people for various reasons so raiding is hard. Because we can't get people for raiding, joining us could be viewed as something of a risk I guess. |

You just have to remain patient. Recruiting has been and always will be tough, especially if you have some standards you would like your new guild mates to have. Though depending on the type of guild you have, I would try to stay away from recruitment macro's to begin with, try making a post in the guild recruitment forum as well as your realm forum. I've just found that the people you have the potential of recruiting via in-game macro, are usually not what most people are looking for in a guild mate. *Correct me if I am wrong, this is just from my own personal experience :)* My guild is fairly new, and formed very slowly, I would say it took us two months to build a solid foundation. Even still, our raiding core is so tight that even if even one person is unable to make raid, it really bites us in the behind. My point to that was, even though my little guild is killing bosses (8/12) we still have troubles in recruiting, and the new guild rep doesn't help :) So I just have to reiterate that patience is key. Hang in there, if you put in the work and the time, you will have your guild. Best of luck! |

I'll give that a shot!
I finally got a bite...and it was a bust. The guy took issue with us only having 2 people online after midnight on a Tuesday. =/ But then he kinda got interested and implied that he'd be interested in joining so I just said, "Well now I am concerned that you would guild hop if things didn't go perfectly" and I decided then and there that I wasn't dealing with that crap. Now to work on a post! |

Imo, you are definitely on the right track :D

The thing to keep in mind, you're only granted a small amount of characters for your entire macro (unless you want to create several and make all of trade chat hate you). You should mention the things that your guild prides themselves in, and their goals for the type of content they want to go through. Keep bank tabs, levels, achievement points, etc out of it unless you're not very exclusive at all. People interested in you and your guild will ask later in the interview (assuming you have one, I strongly recommend it) or not at all.
Use realm forums for larger, more detailed posts. Are you guys all a group of friends from Day 1 that hold annual get-togethers and numerous in-game events, while priding yourselves in Realm First kills since the days of Ragnaros? Put that in your realm forums. All of the quality in your guild should be put in the first paragraphs, perhaps with an FAQ attached at the bottom which includes things such as guild level, etc. People who read far enough to even get to your FAQ are the ones you probably want in your guild. |

If you were actually looking for help creating a macro, open your options tab (computer icon) on your lower tool bar or hit "escape" to bring it up. Select the "Macro" tab and then select create "New". Choose the icon that you like, name it something short and then in the type field either start with /1 for general zone chat or /2 for trade chat. It should look like this:
/2 <Your Guild Name Here> Is currently looking for players of all classes and levels to join our social-leveling guild. PST for invite Then drag the icon on to your tool bar so you can easily click it when you're ready to spam your message to your server. |
