Incoming Healer Changes

Since the release of patch 4.0.6, we’ve been keeping an eye on healers and how they are performing and are currently in the process of making some additional adjustments.

Priests

The cost of Power Word: Shield is being increased by 33%. While we wanted Discipline priests to be able to utilize this spell more often and with better results, we also did not want it to be the main spell (and often the only spell) used while in groups. We don’t find this to be a particularly compelling playstyle and have found that it encourages players to avoid using other spells such as Penance. We believe that using a shield in a tight moment is totally appropriate, but we don’t want it to be incredibly efficient to do so with more frequency than that.

We realize that by making Power Word: Shield slightly more expensive for Discipline priests to cast that it might cause Holy priests to avoid using it. To that end, we are adding mana savings into the Body and Soul talent. The tooltip will not reflect this change until a future patch, however. Ideally, Holy priests should not notice much of a change to the Power Word: Shield costs.

Shaman

We are also applying a hotfix for Purification for the Restoration shaman passive from 10% to 25%. We think that shaman healing per second is not as competitive with other healers and while we hoped to bring down Holy priest and Holy paladins (in particular) in 4.0.6, which we did, shaman still appear to be behind. In this case, it is simply easier to buff Restoration shaman rather than nerf everyone else or rebalance the encounters.

In Addition- Restoration Druids and Restoration Shaman

We agree with the sentiment among some players that Restoration druids and Restoration shaman are lacking in the healing cooldown department. The shaman buff and Power Word: Shield adjustment above should bring all healers reasonably close in terms of throughput. The decision on who to bring then might end up being dictated by the strong cooldowns offered by paladins or priests. This isn’t the kind of thing we can address via a hotfix, but it is something we are looking at for the next major content patch.

As always, we appreciate your continued constructive feedback and will do our best to keep you informed of ongoing developments.

just remove absorbs from the combat logs and people won't care like wotlk :)

Seriously though, I wouldn't mind seeing some sort of PW:S interaction with grace as a means of nerfing 25man shield spamming. There's been a lot of suggestions by the community on how to approach it too. Putting big, efficient shields on the tanks is great, especially on multiple tank encounters. The synergy between pw:s, strength of soul, train of thought, and gheal is really cool and fun.

I've been doing a lot of tank healing since 4.0.6. While a large portion of my healing breakdown is still pw:s, it's not an equally large portion of my time spent casting. You gheal to push weakened soul off and penance->gheal if the tank doesn't have grace. For times of really heavy tank damage, you fall back on flash heal (to reduce weakened soul faster and because of flash's inherently higher hp/s than gheal). I feel that an efficiency nerf here isn't really necessary as flash already drains mana pretty quickly.

In regards to the PW:S/grace interaction:
My suggestion would be to have grace refund mana equal to the nerf
. So if the nerf is 33%, each grace stack refunds 11% mana on the PW:S. This would encourage disc to shield tanks more often and use POH more often on the raid. POH is still high HPS for disc, PW:S is just easier and more efficient currently.

You could even make the PW:S change 50% and then have grace do 17% per stack because I feel that even with 33% a lot of fights will still be PW:S spam on the raid just with more emphasis on timing mana cooldowns and hogging innervates. This change would also help mitigate some of the nerf to disc in pvp and 10mans, where it's not nearly as overpowered as in 25man raids.

P.S. I'd also like to see binding heal proc grace. I'm really glad that binding heal now works with chakra serenity. Between chakra and serendipity, holy can make excellent use of binding heal.
I feel that the disc spec should also be friendly to binding heal, it's a great spell.

Interesting... don't think it'll affect my disc healing too much.

Hallelujah! Hallelujah!

Thanks for listening to our shaman tears and vindicating all of the hours of nerd rage spent on this forum. Thanks to all shaman brethren who helped bring the issue to light and didn't shut up, even after we started annoying ourselves.

The best part? I can stop leveling that pally.

So you're nerfing a part of discipline and to balance it you're buffing holy?
Am I getting this right?

You don't like the way Disc Priests are using PW:S so you're nerfing it for disc priests but because it might affect Holy Priests...You're going to buff holy a bit.....

Yeah sorry but none of that makes sense.

They realize PW:S is too easy a call to make for disc. So they want to increase the cost to cast it for disc, but they don't want to increase it for holy. So they're going to increase the cost, then give a mana cost reduction in Body and Soul to bring it back to where it is now for holy. at least that's how I read it. Final result: For priests without Body & Soul, the mana cost of PW:S is going up by 33%. For priests with Body & Soul there is approximately no change.

I'm glad you guys noticed the Resto shaman and druid sentiments. I've been leveling a disc priest, so I'm wondering if this change is going to put disc back at only casting PW:S when rapture cools down. What are some disc priest opinions there?

i have a question about this

The cost of Power Word: Shield is being increased by 33%.

will you increase it by 33% base mana or you will increase the current amount + 33% of the current amount?

thanks :)

We anticipate having these in relatively soon (possibly as soon as sometime today). We'll do our best to let you know once they're in and we'll be updating the notes on the Hotfix thread as well.
