Whether you're new to the class or a grizzled veteran, there's always more to learn about playing a rogue. In this thread, I’ll do my best to answer commonly asked questions on a wide range of topics relevant to every level and breed of rogue. At present I'm keeping this thread to PvE questions only; I'll fill in PvP gaps in the future.

If you've got any suggestions, Q's you'd like to see A'd, corrections or general death threats, feel free to post in this thread, flip me the bird at @SvelteKumquat or email me at sveltekumquat@gmail.com. I look forward to completely ignoring your messages. :)

What are the latest things that Blizzard has said about rogues?
  • Not much, unfortunately. Over the past few months, what had been a trickle of periodic discussion with WoW's game designers (primarily over Twitter) suddenly dried up. We've seen little to no official communication about the class in 2015.
  • Ravenholdt.net's home page news feed is generally a solid source of new information. I say that from a completely unbiased perspective, of course. It's not like I helped found the site or anything. Definitely not.
  • In addition, Ravenholdt compiles an ongoing list of designer tweets (though there have been few as of late): https://twitter.com/Ravenholdt/favorites

Where all my guides at?

If you're still leveling your rogue, you can't beat Aeriwen's stickied "Rogue Leveling FAQ" thread right in this here forum: http://us.battle.net/wow/en/forum/topic/1083749119

If you're at Level 100, there are a few sources of pretty good rogue guides. I should know: I've written some of them. :)

  • Beginners (PvE): My Wowhead guide will get you started: http://www.wowhead.com/guide=2158
  • Also worth reading: For Assassination specifically, Jokaste's guide features extensive detail and explanations: http://us.battle.net/wow/en/forum/topic/9753835417

    • Intermediate-Plus (PvE): Ravenholdt's guides are helpful if you're looking to optimize your gear and DPS rotation for raiding.
      • Assassination: http://ravenholdt.net/index.php/guides/assassination
      • Combat: http://ravenholdt.net/index.php/guides/combat
      • Subtlety: http://ravenholdt.net/index.php/guides/subtlety

    • Intermediate-Plus (PvE): Icy Veins also has a quality set of guides for the raiding-inclined rogue, but be wary of the stat-weight info.
      • Assassination: http://www.icy-veins.com/wow/assassination-rogue-pve-dps-guide
      • Combat: http://www.icy-veins.com/wow/combat-rogue-pve-dps-guide
      • Subtlety: http://www.icy-veins.com/wow/subtlety-rogue-pve-dps-guide

    • PvP: Sativ has been producing a series of YouTube videos aimed at answering specific questions about various aspects of PvP in Draenor: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLBMButhAK6tt8Fo3R2E4JqD8UVKCCUiTr

What changed for rogues in Warlords?
    • In some ways, a lot, but fundamentally the class isn't much different than it was during Mists. In terms of basic mechanics, easily the biggest change is that combo points now stack on us, not on our targets.
    • The best overall summary around is on Wowhead: http://www.wowhead.com/guide=2289/warlords-of-draenor-rogue-changes
    • A quicker FAQ aimed at folks concerned about Level 100 is on Ravenholdt: http://ravenholdt.net/index.php/blogs/roguechat/47-warlords-rogue-changes-faq

PvE at Level 100: Basic Questions and Answers
=======================================

I'll keep this small to start, and I'll add stuff as I spot new questions that feel common or relevant enough. (And as time allows. :) ) Please nominate questions you'd like to see added!

How are rogues looking in end-game PvE?

In raids, they're generally looking OK. Rogue DPS has faded a bit over the course of the current (Blackrock Foundry) raid tier, but at least one rogue spec is still usually about average or above-average on most raid fights, and a well-played rogue still has a chance to shine.

It's been an up-and-down expansion so far for end-game rogues. We got off to a middling start: Up until mid-December, rogues were generally right around the middle of the pack, but were behind most other melee DPS (warriors, death knights, feral druids, etc.). Then, a string of hotfixes from December through early January skyrocketed rogue specs to the upper slots on many DPS charts. We've slipped from that lofty position over the past couple of months, but rogues remain highly competitive in most end-game situations, particularly at lower difficulty levels (e.g., normal-mode and heroic raiding).

That said, remember that mileage will vary. Averages are just that; from raid to raid, and from fight to fight, you personally may do extremely well or extremely badly depending on a whole host of factors, including how well you're geared, how well you play, what your raid group's strategy is, how much experience you have on that raid fight, what spec you choose, and so on.

What's the best spec for raiding?

Hard to say; each spec is strong in some raid fights and weak in others. Spec choice really doesn't matter too much unless you're in a competitive raid group (which usually means you're running Mythic-difficulty raids) that pushes people to deal the most damage they can. However, of the three rogue specs,
    • Assassination tends to do best on fights where Rupture can be maintained on a small number of targets: Hans'gar and Franzok are a good example of this.
    • Combat tends to do best on fights requiring a lot of multi-target cleave damage: Beastlord Darmac, Blast Furnace, Iron Maidens, Operator Thogar.
    • Subtlety tends to do best on single-target fights: Blackhand, Gruul, Kromog, Oregorger.

All three specs are usually within about 10% of one another in terms of performance, though, so you'll usually be OK whichever one you choose.

How about dungeons?

Unless you're doing Challenge Modes, it really doesn't matter. All three specs are strong enough that any should do well in dungeons -- even heroic dungeons.

If all that matters to you is looking good on DPS meters while killing trash... well, firstly, stop being so vain and petty, that kind of thing doesn't matter and doesn't make you more likely to be respected by others. But Combat with Blade Flurry on will usually rack up the highest numbers whenever you're fighting several non-boss mobs at once.

Proving Grounds?

In my experience, the easiest way to get silver and gold is to go with Combat, since it's the simplest way to cleave (i.e., damage several targets at once). With practice, though, It's achievable with any spec.

What if I'm just questing or killing stuff by myself?

Depends a little on what you're trying to do. Combat is great for going toe-to-toe with two or more mobs at the same time, especially when you can use Killing Spree and Adrenaline Rush for huge bursts of damage. Assassination and Subtlety are probably about equally strong at fighting a single target (Assassination may even pull ahead since you can't usually Backstab things when you're playing by yourself), so I'd tend to go with those if you're going to mess with elite mobs with a lot of health.

What weapons should I use?

For Assassination, it's always daggers in both hands -- that's an absolute requirement.

For Combat, it's generally best to have a "slow weapon" -- e.g., one-handed axes, fist weapons, maces or swords -- in each hand. (If you played Combat in Mists, you'll remember that daggers were almost interchangeable with slow weapons in your off-hand throughout much of the expansion. That's not really the case anymore in Warlords.)

For Subtlety, it's best to have a dagger in both hands. If you have only one decent dagger, though, put your slow weapon in the *off-hand* when you raid -- you'll lose some poison damage, but because you can only Backstab with a dagger (and Backstab is much stronger than Hemorrhage), you want to keep a dagger in your main-hand if it's at all possible.

What stats do I care about?

Always make sure to use gear with agility on it; that's always your most important stat.

Among the secondary stats -- critical strike (crit), haste, mastery, multistrike and versatility -- all of them are good, but some are better than others depending on your spec and the gear your rogue is wearing.

Use ShadowCraft -- http://shadowcraft.mmo-mumble.com -- to find out which stats are currently the most important for your rogue.

For the most part, the "best" secondary stats are mastery or crit for Assassination, haste for Combat and multistrike for Subtlety. But again, use ShadowCraft to determine the best stats for your rogue at the moment -- and to help decide whether new gear drops are upgrades or not, as well as which enchants and gems are best to use.

If you switch specs often and don't want to set up different sets of gear, consider going with multistrike for your enchants and gems. It's the most solid secondary stat across the three specs, whereas other secondary stats tend to be relatively weak for at least one spec.

Once the "Basic Questions" section above begins to fill up, I'll start adding more specific, nitty-gritty type questions and answers here. Or maybe not. The world is a magical and unpredictable place!

I looked and thought: "Another rogue has my name?"

In other news, this is a really great and very useful thread, Rfeann. Thanks for starting and maintaining it.

Tossed in a couple more links from my super-secret list and tweaked the formatting a bit. Please reply with any and all forum threads and outside resources you feel are worth letting other rogues know about; I hope this can ultimately grow into a useful reference tool for advice-seekers and advice-givers alike. (Or it can be met with utter disgust and fall completely flat. Whichever.)

I have good news and bad news:

We're willing to increase your wages by 5% on top of your already 1G.

The bad news, we're going to have to increase your taxes by 4.78%.

But it comes with a free frogurt!

Added a few outside links (Shadow Panther, Encrypted Text), as well as Aeriwen's leveling FAQ (so sorry, Aeriwen -- I forgot about your freaking *sticky*!) and Gerwulf's subtlety PvE videos. Also did another formatting pass to make the lists more readable.

Pretty light on Combat-related stuff at the moment, so if y'all have threads or outside resources to recommend... please do. :) I'm also considering adding a section that links to thoughtful, constructive threads or individual posts that discuss controversial/ongoing issues in rogueness, such as the value of expertise as Assassination or the places where Sap doesn't work quite right. If you remember any specific posts that explained or discussed these issues especially well, please pass 'em along!

Added a link to WoWWiki's rogue macro page, which is one of the most complete lists I've been able to find. If anybody knows of better, though -- or wants to start a thread that's even betterer -- that would be swell.

Also, a repeat call for the stuff I mentioned just above: more Combat resources you know of, as well as threads/posts on these forums in which people talk to each other in a normal, human, productive, non-abusive manner about debate-worthy rogue issues or about bugs/difficulties affecting our class.

Update time!

I've added another two links to the Sub PvE section (Pikawho's guide and Synek's overview in the EU forums), along with a note about why I've got so many links related to a spec that isn't even considered raid-viable. Any sub PvE rogues out there have feelings on which of the four guides I list is better or worse from a helpfulness/accuracy standpoint?

I've also added Ten Ton Hammer's broad overview of the entire rogue class. It's one of few umbrella-type looks at rogueness as a whole, and while it may be out of date in spots, it's still a great first step for anybody who's new to the class, considering rolling a rogue, or brushing off their rogues after a long hiatus.

Please reply with link recommendations or criticisms! This thread is still very light on Combat stuff.

p.s.: Truewann, quit changing the name of your PvP guide every other day. :P

Ha! Thanks. Yeah, since I'm not cool enough to make the news (or start the great forum threads), I figure I might as well just report on it. :)

Hey Tru, I'm considering adding this still-new thread to the mix:

Combat?! PVP viable?
http://us.battle.net/wow/en/forum/topic/2112233779

I figure that since Combat PvP tends to suffer from the same knowledge gap as Subtlety PvE, it helps to provide folks with a link to good discussions even if they're not comprehensive guides. But I also don't know Combat from a hole in the ground. In your opinion, is the info in that thread mostly helpful so far? (Celinne, if you're out there, I'd love your take as well.)
