Buzzing Sound While on WoW

My problem is that while I am tabbed into wow there is a very noticeable buzzing noise playing through my headset, it is very annoying and when I am on Skype or Ventrillo with my guild / arena partners they can hear it playing through my headset as well. If I am on my desktop with no applications showing there is no buzzing, I have not had a problem with this in any other games I have played, only when I am tabbed into wow and it is running, anyone know how to fix this?

Catwithflag ,

It's pretty hard to troubleshoot a sound issue without being able to hear it, but start with your mixer app. Mute any mic inputs first as it may just be from an "open mic". If you disable or even uninstall Skype/Vent, does it still do it?

Catwithflag,

Do you have Wow's voice chat enabled? You might try disabling that if you prefer using Vent as it might be another mic input that's open.

That as well as all wow sound is disabled, changing video settings does not effect it as well tried going to lowest as opposed to ultra and there is no difference still very noticable

Catwithflag ,

Do you hear the buzzing when using speakers instead of the headset? Is it a USB headset or using an analog cable connected to the sound card?

Catwithflag,

Do you hear the buzzing when running the speaker setup utility that comes with your sound card?

Have you made sure your sound drivers are up to date?

From what I gather, you have an X-Fi Xtreme Music.

Try using the sound drivers dated 2/16/2011 from that page.

Your Dell also has integrated sound. Try disabling or even physically removing the X-Fi, and enable the on-board sound and see if it does it.

How would i do those?

Catwithflag ,

If it were me, I'd unplug the pc, open it up, and remove the Sound Blaster X-Fi card. Then button it back up, plug it in, turn it on, and enter the BIOS. There, I'd make sure the on-board sound was enabled.

You may have to dig up the cd/dvd that came with the computer in order to install the sound drivers it's going to need, or Windows may find/install them for you automatically.

I do not know if you have tried this and i know this is a old topic but i recently encountered this buzzing noise. What i did to fix it was go to my control panel go to hardware and sound, manage audio devices , hit the recording tab at the top, Then check the properties of anything checked off. Then under custom see if 20db mic boost is on....uncheck that and see if the hum goes away.Hope this helps anyone else that may have this problem.

I have the same problem, i have experienced this with multiple different headphones and an easy way to fix it i just turned down my volume from the mic it's self and it works. However now i have this new Head-set and there is no volume control. And my mic boost isn't on any suggestions?

This issue has recently sprung up on me in the last couple of months and I decided to address it today. After some research I tried using an AC to USB convertor like for ipods with no luck, adjusted all my volumes, checked my grounding as best I could in my tower, etc.

The only thing I have found that eliminates it is turning on vertical sync, yes I tried everything lol. I don't have any good explanation for it, I'm assuming it has to do with GPU interference because my desktop will run WoW at around 200FPS if I let it. Even adjusting the maximum fps manually did nothing and I don't experience this in any other game. Hope that helps someone else because that crap is annoying as all hell.

I just built a new computer and have noticed this happening on my system as well. If I turn on vertical sync, the buzz gets lowered pitched. I also noticed that the sound changes based on my FPS. If I go into a populated area and spin around quickly, the sound changes.

If I set my sound to off (all sliders to 0%, and enable sounds unchecked) I still get the problem. If I select my USB headset, I don't hear the buzz from the headset, but I still hear it from my monitor speakers.

I'm thinking this has something to do with interference with the sound over the HDMI connection, but I know very little about sound, so I may be completely wrong.

I am also experiencing this problem. I enabled vertical sync and the pitch changes. Sound goes away when you minimize WoW but comes right back on re-entering the game. I am using older speakers with 3.5mm jack, I have unplugged and disabled all other input and output mic and playback devices.

As Omglowellz noted, if you spin around your character the pitch will change depending on what direction your camera faces. Also if you change your graphics settings, the pitch changes as well. I went from my default (ultra) down through presets and the frequency gets higher with each drop in graphics setting.
