Raiding as Retribution - Updated for 4.1
___________________________________________________________________

This is a PvE guide. See Vanguard's PvP guide if that's your fancy.

The goal of this thread is to serve as a sort of hub for Ret Paladin resources to be plugged into: a place for the beginner or veteran Retadin to ask and answer questions, assist one another in matters of gear and class mechanics, and discuss the spec in as civil a manner as possible.

The information here is drawn from several sources, including Exemplar's post on Elitist Jerks and several topics here on these forums, and touched up slightly by yours truly. Similarly to Exemplar's post, the one thing that you will not find here is a BiS list.

The contents of this thread will be updated as new information becomes available in order to maintain a high level of accuracy.

1 Spec
___________________________________________________________________

I write from the standpoint of maximizing DPS over the provision of additional utility. As such, my recommended spec utilizes 2 points in Eye for an Eye and none in Guardian's Favor or AoS:

http://www.wowhead.com/talent#sbhMZMZfbGsdkszfz:oRMRZmzM

GF and AoS have their uses in 5-mans, but those instances of usefulness are few and far between. This is especially true in a raiding environment. While a 3-minute CD on BoP may look attractive for raiding, remember that most fights will still only be long enough for you to use it once even with a reduced cooldown.

On the subject of AoS, the only encounters in which a movement speed cleanse would be useful at all are those within ToFW. Such factors diminish the values of these talents significantly. They simply aren't worth the points in the interest of maximizing DPS.

2 Glyphs
___________________________________________________________________

Generally, if a glyph is not mentioned here, it is not worth mentioning. Only glyphs which are considered the most valuable at a given time will be listed here. Some exceptions may be made and all selections will be explained in some detail.

2.1 Prime

While Glyph of Crusader Strike may be an attractive choice, the nitty gritty is that we simply do not have enough Crit to begin with for it to perform as well as it may later on with weapon and stat scaling. Exorcism currently scales much better and has the unique ability to crit 100% of the time on Undead and Demon targets - a property which its glyphed DoT inherits - giving the glyph a very noticeable edge over an increased crit chance to Crusader Strike.

It is optimal to reforge out of Expertise in order to utilize the full 10 points provided by Glyph of Seal of Truth. Don't be afraid to reitemize for the sake of its use.

2.2 Major

Generally speaking (I enjoy the word "generally") Ascetic Crusader and HoW are your best first and second major glyph choices. They provide the highest mana returns and as a pair will virtually eliminate any chance of your going OOM unless you're spamming heals. On fights where you are assigned to interrupts and will have to do them often, such as Halfus or Maloriak, it may be a good idea to replace HoW with Rebuke.

The third major is interchangeable. For raid encounters you will always want to glyph for Divine Protection. The vast majority of raid damage mechanics are magic damage, so a glyphed 40% magic damage reduction is a huge deal. For certain 5-mans, you may wish to glyph for Holy Wrath, causing the spell to stun Dragonkin and Elementals as well as Demons and Undead.

2.3 Minor

Honestly, what else are we going to use? (Rhetorical question alert!)
___________________________________________________________________

3 Rotation
___________________________________________________________________

What you need to realize about Retribution's rotation is that it's actually a loose priority system. Hitting your buttons in the suboptimal order will not put your meters in the dirt, but you will of course be performing at a suboptimal standard (go figure).

3.1 Single Target

Note that opening rotations may differ from what you read in this section due to initial CD usage. Optimal opening rotations are discussed in section 4 (Cooldowns).

Inq > CS > HoW > Exo > TV > J > HW > Cons
Inq > CS > TV > HoW > Exo > J > HW > Cons

Either rotation works, but presently spreadsheets recommend the former selection for higher gear levels (~359+). DPS variances are rather slight between the two.

Inq > CS > TV > Exo > HoW > J > HW > Cons, or
Inq > CS > Exo > HoW > TV > J > HW > Cons

The above selections are optimal priority queues for Undead and Demon targets. Once again, DPS variances are slight. There is no real item level threshold for priority preference here. The fact that Exorcism auto-crits when used on Undead or Demons and its faster scaling causes it to pull ahead of HoW in these scenarios. (Exemplar)

Inquisition is one of the most important abilities to our damage output. It is imperative that it be up 100% of the time, if not close to it. Redcape suggests casting Inquisition at 1 HoPo and refreshing at 3 HoPo or on a Divine Purpose proc without the 4p tier bonus. With the 4p bonus, it is optimal to cast and refresh at 1 HoPo.

If Divine Purpose procs with 2 HoPo and CS off of cooldown, use CS first, then burn both TVs (one from natural HoPo, one from DP). You should immediately be able to CS again. If CS has just been used when DP procs, it is safe to burn the DP proc as a filler while you wait on the cooldown to Crusader Strike again.

3.2 Multiple Target

The AoE rotation is rather similar to single-target, simply replace Crusader Strike with Divine Storm. The rest of the priority stays the same. With Holy Wrath being a meteor effect, at 3 targets you should begin using Consecration over HW. (Exemplar)

Current modeling and tests by Redcape suggest that you should only swap to an AoE rotation for 5+ targets. In 4.1, it may be optimal to make the switch at 4+ as Divine Storm will generate a charge of HoPo when hitting four or more targets at a time.

4 Cooldowns
___________________________________________________________________

Since such a large part of our damage output is based on the use and effective management of our cooldowns, it's important for us to understand our cooldowns and what they do.

4.1 Avenging Wrath

Avenging Wrath increases all damage by 20% while active. Fully talented this lasts 20 seconds with a 2-minute cooldown, providing a 16.6% effective up-time. (Exemplar) This ability allows the use of HoW while active, whether target health is above or below 20%. As with any major cooldown, it is best used through Bloodlust effects. However, losing a CD cycle over the course of an encounter by waiting on a Bloodlust to burn them is a painful DPS loss.

4.2 Zealotry

Zealotry is a 20-second buff with a 2-minute cooldown which causes your Crusader Strike ability to grant 3 charges of HoPo rather than 1. Zealotry is most effective when used in conjunction with Avenging Wrath and other DPS-increasing conditions such as potions and trinkets.

The general rotation while Zealotry is active is CS > TV > filler > CS > TV > filler, etc. Any ability that is not CS qualifies as a filler, including DP procs used for free TVs.

4.3 Guardian of Ancient Kings

Guardian of Ancient Kings provides a stacking Strength buff which will stack up to 20 times, granting you an additional 20% of your current Strength (including bonuses from buffs, trinkets, and potions). The buff lasts for a total of 30 seconds.

In a CD sequence it is advised to use GoAK first to stack the Strength bonus. After ~10 seconds you would use AW and Zeal. This would provide the maximum Strength benefit for the entirety of the AW/Zeal. (Exemplar)

4.4 Effective Usage

The way you use your cooldowns is crucial to your overall output. The ability to manage your cooldowns can either make or break your DPS.

Where once it was recommended that AW and Zealotry be used separately, it is now optimal to burn these cooldowns together, all the time, every time.

If you do not have 20+ seconds of Inq already rolling, Zeal + Inq first, then AW + HoW. If you have the 20+ seconds of Inq required to cover the entire CD cycle, blow AW + HoW first, and then Zeal + TV on the next GCD. Proceed from there with your usual rotation. Bind on-use trinkets to AW.

For your first CD cycle, it's important to summon your first GoAK. 10 seconds later, burn AW/Zealotry/On-use trinkets. I recommend saving your Golemblood Potion for important burn phases (but remember only to use them during a CD cycle or you are wasting DPS).

Typically, your opening CD cycle will look something like this:

CS/GoAK > filler (x2) > CS > filler (x2) > CS > Zealotry/Inq* > AW/Trinket/Potion + HoW** > CS > TV > filler > CS > TV > HoW, etc.

* Zealotry is off of the GCD, so Inq or TV can be used on top of it.

** AW, On-use trinkets, and potions are all off of the GCD so, if they are macro'd together, it is possible to use that GCD for a HoW.

It's complicated to look at at first, and certainly not a perfect opener for every situation or raid encounter, but it is generally quite effective. Early DP procs should be used to activate Inquisition so that all HoPo provided by Zealotry can be used for TV.

These rules, per se, do not apply to any and every encounter. There are always exceptions.

4.5 Pre-potting

http://elitistjerks.com/f76/t110342-retribution_concordance_4_0_6_compliant/#Pre-potting

Exemplar covers this topic more clearly than I could hope to.
___________________________________________________________________

5 Gearing
___________________________________________________________________

5.1 Stat Weights

    Weapon Speed 188250
    Weapon DPS 862

    Strength 227
    Hit rating 98.5*
    Exp rating 98.5*
    Mastery rating 101
    Crit rating 96
    Haste rating 80

* Weighted as the mean of Crit and Mastery

Weapon damage is king, so to speak. Slower weapons generally mean higher weapon damage at equal item levels. If a faster weapon has a higher weapon damage than another, slower weapon (i.e. T2 weapon vs 359 Ashkandi), the faster weapon will be better.

Since the change to our mastery in 4.0.6, Mastery rating is now our most valuable DPS-increasing secondary stat, followed closely by Crit rating, trailed distantly by Haste. We do our best to avoid Haste and stack Mastery as best we can. Crit is nice, but there simply isn't enough of it right now for it to be that valuable to us in this tier. There is an inflection point where Crit rating becomes for valuable than Mastery, but it's not currently reachable in Retribution Paladin gear.

5.2 Tier Bonuses

    • 2p Bonus - Increases the damage done by your Templar's Verdict by 10%.
    • 4p Bonus - Inquisition's duration is calculated as if you had one additional Holy Power.

Templar's Verdict is around 20% of our total DPS. Thus a 10% gain is approximately a 2% overall DPS boost. (Exemplar) You can't go wrong here.

Redcape has determined that the 4p bonus carries a weight of roughly 153 Strength, an obvious must-have for the raiding Retadin. More on this can be found at the link below.

http://elitistjerks.com/f76/t110342-retribution_concordance_4_0_6_compliant/p32/#782

5.3 Reforging

Reforging allows you to exchange 40% of a combat rating already on an item and converts it into a combat rating not already on an item. Example: If an item has Crit, you cannot add more Crit, if it has no Crit then you could reforge 40% of another rating (Expertise, Haste, Hit, or Mastery) into Crit. An item with 100 Hit and no Crit could be reforged to 60 Hit and 40 Crit. (Exemplar)

Current reforging priority is as follows:

Hit to cap (8.00%) > Expertise to cap (16 + GoSoT) > Mastery > Crit > Haste

You want to reforge out of Haste, and then out of Crit, and then out of excess (over cap) Expertise and Hit. Reforge Mastery out to Hit and Expertise only if you absolutely have to in order to reach your caps. Try to stay within ~0.05% of the 8.00% Hit cap (over) to be sure you don't actually miss and, at the same time, waste too much rating going over cap.

Do your best to maintain an Expertise rating of 16 (26 with GoSoT). No lower, no higher.

5.4 Gemming

Outside of JC-specific gems, if it isn't here, you aren't going to be using it.

Strength is king; remember this in all of your endeavors. Cases in which not gemming pure Strength is optimal include replacing a single gem with a Str/rating hybrid for a +20 (or greater) Str bonus. No Strength loss, 20 free rating. An example is my chest piece (you can examine it via my Armory sheet by clicking on my avatar).

Replacing two gems with Strength/rating hybrids for a 30 Strength bonus, you lose 10 Strength for 40 rating - minor net gain. Replacing one with a Strength/rating hybrid for a 30 Mastery rating bonus, the loss of 20 Strength for 50 Mastery results in a net DPS gain. Remember that pure Strength is not always best.

In general you will see +10 stats for a single socket bonus, +20 for two sockets, +30 for three sockets. Helmets break this rule and may be significantly higher for a single socket. (Exemplar)

Your two choices of meta gems are Reverberating Shadowspirit Diamond and Chaotic Shadowspirit Diamond. The former is obviously the best choice, but they can be rather expensive on some servers. If you cannot afford it, pick up the Chaotic gem to hold you over.

You may refer to my Armory profile for examples of effective gemming strategies. We get a lot of questions concerning gemming for particular pieces of gear which we're more than happy to answer as well. The same applies to reforging strategies.

5.5 Enchants

6 Trinkets
___________________________________________________________________

6.1 By the Numbers - BiS

Trinket selection can be very controversial for Retribution Paladins. It almost seems that our BiS set changes every week. However, a thread was published quite recently by Kisko which has brought some new light to the subject. It can be found here:

http://www.mmo-champion.com/threads/851901-Ret-Trinket-ratings-estimation-4.0.6

I'm sold on the numbers that Kisko provided. They suggest that our best bets pre-372 are Heart of Rage and License to Slay.

When it comes to true BiS (372i), Heart of Rage and Crushing Weight appear to provide the most DPS. The 359 version of HoR is superior to the 372 version of CW, but it hasn't be possible to equip the normal and heroic versions of one trinket at the same time since ToC.
___________________________________________________________________

7 Consumables
___________________________________________________________________

Flask - Flask of Titanic Strength is the obvious choice. Cauldrons of Battle and Big Cauldrons of Battle provide Flask of Battle which give the same Strength buff.

Potion - Golemblood Potion is pure Strength which is amazing for us. Gone are the days of Haste pots. Use potions only under the effects of a CD cycle and/or Bloodlust effects.

Food - Beer-Basted Crocolisk provides a buff of 90 Strength and 90 Stamina, making it our best option. Seafood Magnifique Feast offers 90 Stamina in addition to 90 of another useful stat, in our case Strength, making it equivalent to the Crocolisk for our needs.

___________________________________________________________________

8 Mechanics
___________________________________________________________________

• Partial resists no longer occur.

• Glancing blows (only on mobs 3+ levels higher than you, such as Skull bosses) happen 24% of the time on auto-attacks. A glancing blow deals 75% damage and cannot crit.

• Boss level mobs have melee crit suppression of 4.8% and spell crit suppression of ~2.1%. This means you will crit less frequently than the % displayed on your character screen.

• Autoattack crit cap is 71.2% (100% - 24% glancing - 4.8% suppression). Crit above this level would not generate anymore crits.

• Ability crit cap is either 95.2% (100% - 4.8% suppression) or possibly 100% (104.8% - 4.8% suppression). Either is beyond possibility for Retribution Paladin gear.

• You need 8.00% hit to be melee capped. This is 961 hit rating (841 rating as Draenei). This affects all of your melee attacks, preventing them from missing. Crusader Strike, Templar's Verdict, Judgement, and Hammer of Wrath all use the melee hit cap.

• You need 17% hit to be spell capped. We gain 8% spell hit free with Sheath of Light. This means you need 9%, or 922 hit rating (820 rating as a Draenei) to cap. Note that since this is less than the required melee cap, as long as you cap melee hit you will always cap spell hit. Exorcism, Holy Wrath, and Consecration are affected by spell hit.

• You need 781 expertise rating (26.00 expertise) to prevent all boss dodge. With GoSoT you need 481 rating (16.00 expertise) to prevent boss dodge. Humans and Dwarves have 3 free expertise from racials when wielding specific types of weapons, this equals approx 90 expertise rating dropping their caps to 691/391. When attacking from behind only autoattacks, Crusader Strike, Templar's Verdict, and Hammer of Wrath can be dodged. Judgement and spell attacks cannot be dodged. If attacking from the front, the boss may still parry at this level of Expertise - avoid standing in front of the boss.

• Autoattacks, Crusader Strike, Templar's Verdict, and Judgement are all considered melee attacks, using Melee Hit and Crit %. Other than Judgement they are susceptible to parry and dodge. Judgement cannot be dodged, parried, or blocked, though it can miss.

All ratings function at a level finer than represented by the paper doll. For example, 170 Mastery would display as 0 Mastery on the paper doll, however you do gain the benefits - it would provide ~0.95% (* 2.1% Holy Damage).

8.1 Mastery Damage

Our Mastery (Hand of Light) adds an additional 16.8% + 2.1% per Mastery (value / rating) of damage to Crusader Strike, Divine Storm, and Templar's Verdict as Holy damage.

The original attack (CS, DS, or TV) is calculated, modified by de/buffs and gear. Mastery then takes the appropriate % of this damage and applies that as a flat value. The Mastery cannot crit - base attack crit damage is already factored into the Hand of Light damage. The only de/buff which impacts Mastery is Inquisition. Inq does not modify the base attack. This prevents Mastery damage from double-dipping on any de/buffs.

___________________________________________________________________

9 Races
___________________________________________________________________

When it comes to racials that impact PvE damage, the Alliance is superior. Horde paladin racials have little to no impact outside of PvP purposes. (Exemplar)

9.1 Alliance

    Draenei
- Heroic Presence: Grants a static +1% Hit to the Draenei. This buff no longer applies to the character's party or raid. Affords a little more freedom in reforging and enchanting.
- Gift of the Naaru: %-based HoT with some use in PvE and PvP survivability.

    Human
- Sword/Mace Specialization: Free 3 Expertise when wielding a Sword or Mace.
- Every Man For Himself: Free CC break. 2-minute CD. May be used to earn a few extra seconds of DPS time or to get to a safe spot during an encounter. Frees up a trinket slot for PvP.

    Dwarf
- Mace Specialization: Free 3 Expertise when wielding a Mace.
- Stoneform: Clears all poison, disease, and bleed effects and reduces incoming damage by 10% for a short time. 2-minute CD. Some use in PvE and PvP survivability.

9.2 Horde

    Blood Elf
- Arcane Torrent: 2-second silence and 6% mana regen on a 2-minute cooldown. Very little use in PvE because of Rebuke, some use in PvP.

    Tauren
- War Stomp: 2-second stun. 2-minute CD. Near worthless in PvE. Some use in PvP.

Overall, Alliance races beat out Horde for Retribution.

10 Professions
___________________________________________________________________

Everything you need to know about each profession that pertains to us can be found here:

http://elitistjerks.com/f76/t110342-retribution_concordance_4_0_6_compliant/#Professions

10.1 Min/Maxing

Min/maxing is the act of minimizing overtures such as excess Hit and Expertise and maximizing optimal stats such as Strength and Mastery in any way possible. An important part of min/maxing is the professions that you choose. Certain professions, such as Leatherworking and Tailoring, provide very valuable perks such as Strength bonuses or AP procs. Others, such as Skinning and Mining, provide very trivial DPS bonuses (i.e. Crit rating or Stamina).

As a rule of thumb, we want production professions (JC, BS, LW, Enchanting, Alchemy, etc.) for the sake of min/maxing. Gathering professions such as Skinning offer far less valuable perks, such as increased crit rating, rather than the primary stat bonuses provided by production professions.

Currently our best professions for min/maxing are Jewelcrafting and Tailoring. JC beats out BS, LW, Alchemy, and Inscription by 1 Strength (81 vs 80) from perks. Tailoring's Swordguard cloak enchant procs for 1000 AP for 15 seconds on an ICD of 55 seconds. Napkin numbers show that this averages out to a slightly higher AP bonus than any other profession can provide.

11 Addons & Macros
___________________________________________________________________

"For what are we if it not be for our addons?!"

11.1 Useful Addons

    clcRet - http://wow.curse.com/downloads/wow-addons/details/clcret.aspx
- This addon isn't an absolute must-have, but it is incredibly useful and one of my personal favorites. It tracks your ability cooldowns and makes suggestions of what you should use next in your rotation based on pre-determined skill priorities.

By default the addon will suggest CS under 3 HoPo when it's off cooldown and TV at 3 HoPo, and then any other skill that may be up in between. You can customize the priority queue to include Inquisition if you like, but it's not something I do. Also includes a stand-alone HoPo bar.

    OmniCC - http://wow.curse.com/downloads/wow-addons/details/omni-cc.aspx
- Adds text to items and abilities that are on cooldown to more clearly indicate when they will be ready for use. Must-have for pinpoint CD tracking on major abilities such as AW and Zealotry.

    Clique - http://wow.curse.com/downloads/wow-addons/details/clique.aspx
- Ease of keybinding. Allows you to directly bind abilities from your spellbook onto any number of key combos. You can also opt to bind custom macros through the addon interface. Abilities can be set to activate on key-press with or without target, when the target is friendly, when it is hostile, or only when mousing over this raid frame or that unit frame. Highly recommended.

11.2 Macros

I'm not a huge macro-user myself, but I know that there are those who live and die by the /m command. If you're one of those people, EJ has a few macros that you may find somewhat useful.

http://elitistjerks.com/f76/t110342-retribution_concordance_4_0_6_compliant/#Macros

Here's one macro that I do use though - credit to Raygecow:

#showtooltip
/cast Avenging Wrath
/use 14

Very simple. It activates your On-use trinket (if placed in the second trinket slot) at the same time as AW, giving you one less button to press to get your CD cycle rolling.

My macros lack the "#showtooltip" line because it doesn't really matter. My major cooldowns and macros are bound to Clique and not to action bars. It makes for a far cleaner UI.

13 Change Log
___________________________________________________________________

Friday, April 01, 2011 - Added jump-to-post links to the Table of Contents.

Friday, April 13, 2011 - Adjusted Hit and Expertise stat weights to the mean of Mastery and Crit to make personal gear weighting less confusing and lopsided when presented with Hit and Expertise pieces. This does not affect the importance of Hit or Expertise capping.

Friday, April 22, 2011 - Corrections and adjustments to the Cooldowns>Effective Usage section (4.4) including the opening CD rotation. Typos and grammar.

Tuesday, May 17, 2011 - Removed Selfless Healer section. It's no longer even remotely plausible to consider specing into Selfless Healer for PvE as of 4.1.

Bump for completion! :D Any questions, comments, or concerns are welcomed. It's not perfect, but I hope it'll help. I pulled from the most reliable sources I could get my hands on as well as from my own experiences in-game and in conversation with many quite admirable and talented Paladin players, especially here on these forums.

Great guide I like how this actually goes into detail in a lot of ways guides do not. Too many guides get in the habit of letting you figure too much out on your own, which is fine to a degree, but that is not what people come to guides for. Great guide glad it doesn't do that cause that is the worst.

Glad you like it. :) I tried to keep it as definitive as possible.

[e] I plan on adding a section to explain stat weight calculations for gear and what-not later on. I know a lot of people have trouble with stuff like that, so I figure it might be useful.

5.3 Tier Bonuses

• 2p Bonus - Increases the damage done by your Templar's Verdict by 10%.
• 4p Bonus - Inquisition's duration is calculated as if you had one additional Holy Power.

Templar's Verdict is around 20% of our total DPS. Thus a 10% gain is approximately a 2% overall DPS boost. (Exemplar) You can't go wrong here.

Redcape has determined that the 4p bonus carries a stat value of roughly 153 Strength, an obvious must-have for the raiding Retadin. More on this can be found at the link below, post #782.

And could you help clear this one up as it is not clear if you should go for the PvP 2pc if you are using i359 T11, and only have either the T11 shoulders or head, or if the T11 4pc is good enough that you would swap in T11 gloves for the PvP ones.

The 4p T11 bonus does merit dropping the PvP 2p.
