Topic Frost vs Unholy for PvP
What are the pros and cons of each?
I've been PvPing as frost for a little while, and I feel my biggest issue (aside from being undergeared and doing poop DPS) is just sticking to a target, hunters especially. Because frost doesn't have beefed up death coils or diseases, when a target manages to get away from me for several seconds I feel totally helpless.
On the flip-side, I think having to manage a ghoul in the midst of PvP battle would be a total nightmare.
P.S: Please don't critique my gear/spec or whatever. I know I'm lame. I just want input about Unholy versus Frost for PvP, as the title suggests.
83 Night Elf Mage
I am assuming this is for battlegrounds/world pvp?
Honestly they're both very good in different ways. Frost has a lot of control, and a big tasty helping of burst. Mobility, however, suffers. Not super effective to chains root a hunter 20 yards from you. As frost you have to really think in terms of LoS against ranged. Use the terrain to your advantage. Also, if their pet is on you, DS the sucker a few times for health. Sometimes if you can pull the pet around a corner and start DSing it, the hunter will panic. I've had them run around the corner after me, right into a nice fat oblit to the face. Even if they just pull the pet off, it can give you breathing room to heal back up.
I've had much less experience with unholy, but from what I've seen they are far more mobile/deadly from range. The pet's damage is not trivial, especially when you empower the sucker. Tough to beat a stun with that kind of range too. All those dots running on your opponent hurt like hell over time too, and you certainly don't have to be right on them to do that damage (or even in LoS). Think aff lock in a lot of ways.
After all that, however, if your target is bgs, Blood is fun. You have great survival, and you can REALLY annoy the enemy. Sure you'll get kited all to hell but that's mostly an issue with frost mages (and even with them if you can get near their pet you can heal up to full very quickly). The best thing about blood (right now, it IS getting nerfed so don't fall in love) is that it works well with lower levels of gear. Crafted blues all you got? Queue up cowboy, you'll be fine.
I've never tried Unholy, and don't play it because I don't want to micromanage a ghoul and I prefer the burst damage of a frost dk. I constantly top the charts in bgs and arena as a frost dk. Also, fighting in unholy presence and using chains of ice works great when you need to catch someone.
The ghoul is not hard to handle once you spend some time with it, and the utility it brings is significant. The burst damage of Frost is easier to notice but Unholy is best at consistent sustained damage. It's much easier to notice a big frost strike/obliterate crit than a regular festering strike into a death coil into pet hits, doesn't mean that the big crit necessarily resulted in more damage. Also, the ghoul stun is the only true hard cc you have as a dk and is absolutely game changing for the class due to many reasons.
Frost 2H PvP
High RP Generation
Higher Necro strike dmg
Good Burst dmg with good sustained dmg afterwards
Not nearly as much KM procs as DW
Not able to reforge as much mastery as DW
Have to reforge some hit
Frost DW PvP
More KM procs
Reforge for most mastery
No reforge wasted on hit
Less RP Generation
Weaker Necro dmg numbers
Have to pay more attention to your runes, RP, etc. to reduce downtime
Can kite easily
Provides long lasting sustained pressure on whatever they are sitting on
Destroys casters and provides irreplaceable anti caster support via anti magic purple bubble
Gimped range damage
short bursts based on CD's but mostly just a pressure spec it's sustained dmg over the long haul
Ghoul sometimes act retarded

i just switch to unholy from frost, so far my DK is lvl 68, so i mainly PVP in blood spec, but in dungeons, i always go unholy, unless i tank, i have to say, unholy is a lot more fun put all the diseases on a target then pestilence to spread all disease to all other targets, you can easily top the DPS. the larger the pull, the more dps you get.
i am gonna try it in pvp see how it goes. but for DKs, hunters are not the problem, frost mages are.

Howling Blast (the final frost talent) absolutely transforms Frost DK damage. I would recommend saving judgement until after you experiment with it.
