The WoW Movie Recording Guide For Macs

Dapredator is correct. I like making tutorials this way, and with the subtitles and adding music feature, they come out really snazzy.

Can you provide some more information? Such as the format of the video that you compressed it into within WoW, the version of OS X and iMovie you're using, and the exact text of the error message?

I know what I do is after a movie is created, I open up iMovie and select File/Import movies.../World of Warcraft/Movies and select the video I want to edit. Then when it is in the Event Library, I drag it up into the Project Library and start editing.

Keep in mind that until you let wow compress the videos, they are in a fragmented unrecgonizable file format. They have to first be processed into an actual video file by wow's compression feature first, then imovie should recognize them.

It is unfortunate that the Blizzard choose to name this feature "compression" because it implies that it is an optional step for saving space. While compression is part of what it is doing, it has other mandatory steps too.

I've run into quite a few folks who didn't understand that the compression was mandatory. Perhaps Blizzard should rename it to "assemble" or "finalize" instead.

Hi, Thanks for a great post.

I'm having an issue that I'm wondering if you can help me figure out.

I have one of the new 27 inch iMacs with a 7200rpm hard drive. Its now about 6 months old. For Shannox through Majordomo, I was able to record our heroic kills without a hitch using 1600x900 resolution. I also was able to do some of our rag attempts. Sometime during rag, my computer stopped being able to do 1600x900, I had to drop down to the next lowest res, 1300x whatever. For Dragon Soul the problem is persisting, and I can't record at 1600x900. The difference is huge and I think the lower res looks significantly crappier.

I'd really like to be able to record at 1600x900 and from early firelands I KNOW my computer should be able to. What could have changed, and do you have any ideas on how I can get my computer back to what it was doing before?

Since it sounds like hard drive is the biggest factor, my only thought is that defragging might help? Would you agree that might help? Can you think of anything else that might matter?
Does having a windows partition (100GB out of 1TB) hurt it at all?

it's free space mainly, and disk speed i think. if the disk can't write fast enough to keep up with recording size it'll start to fail. and on encounters you mention they seem to be higher performance fights, ones that lower your computer speed t begin with, it's possible you're just unable to record at those graphics settings, have you tried reducing graphics on those fights and trying?

Hi, thanks for the response.

I've lowered the graphics some, but it doesn't seem to have that great of an impact. I notice the "data recording rate" value doesn't change when I adjust the "quality" slider off of max nor does changing the graphics in the game. The only thing that seems to lower it is lowering the recording resolution. Is that normal? Based on the OP and your response, it sounds like that number is pretty important.

Also, you mention the graphical complexity of the fight slowing down the computer in the first place. Does that mean that getting more RAM or something could counter that (I'm currently using 4GB)? The game runs fine on ultra so long as I'm NOT recording. Is it more strenuous for the hard drive to write a more complex fight, even though the game itself is running fine?

I feel my disk speed (7200) must be fast enough if it was able to do it in the past. That's really my biggest source of frustration and confusion, that I was able to do this before on the same settings that aren't working now. Also, I have about 500MB of free space. If it were fragmented would that affect writing speed?

P.S. What DOES the quality slider do, technically?

the slider quality i thought would affect record size as well, but maybe it only affects after recording compression? maybe only resolution affects record size, i'm not that sure to be honest, i don't record a whole lot.

Ah, sorry. But yeah. I'm not technically "back". I've just been lurking around since I left just to follow WoW's development, and found out a couple days ago I could still post even after my account was closed. So... Yeah... >.>

Tech/CS forums only require an account to be registered to post here, not active. They are treated with exception so anyone with an expired account can still get help getting back up and running. Although i guess that technicallity also means that you can continue helping people forever whether you have wow or not heh.

Can you suggest a few good external hard drives for recording on a Macbook pro? I'm having trouble finding a 10,000 rpm Firewire 800 hard drive online.
