I saw him at DragonCon, he cut his hair. The Dresden series isn't the only thing he works on, he also has other contractual obligations I'm sure. But yes, I am excited for Ghost Stories. They put like a 7 or 8 page excerpt on Penguin Group website. Here is the link:

Love this series for the sheer scale. He's got a huge canvas in front of him and is obviously enjoying throwing entire buckets of myth-paint at it.
Wizards! Magic! Machineguns! *sploosh* Ok, 3 types of vampires, with a hint of jade too... *splash* Ghosts and spirits! *splat* Some holy knights who wield ancient swords... *splush* Tough chick cop, who goes from stereotype to fleshed out char later... *splish* Gangsters... *splot* Hmm, let's have some werewolves!! - 6 kinds of werewolves!! *huge splash on canvas* Demons!! muahhahahaha! *splod* For sheer terror let's add the Daoine Sidhe, summer & winter courts + the Erlking! *splosh* WTF Denarians... *splib* And best of all, he's making it all not only stick, but work and interact together. |

I recently finished the Nightside books by Simon R. Green, which made me want to read more of the genre (urban noir fantasy). I stumbled upon Dresden Files the tv show on Hulu, and found myself watching the whole season with increasing interest. I read various criticisms of the show and how it differs in characterization, etc... This leads me to believe that I would enjoy the books even more. Need to pick up the first novel soon...

Side Jobs was a lot of fun (particularly The Warrior).
Cannot wait for Ghost Story. The graphic novels are actually really good, too. The whole series is highly recommended. |

If you want to try a Dresden Files book, highly recommend you start with the third book (Grave Peril). Others in this thread have also expressed that they feel the first two books in the series aren't as good. While they may not be as good, doing that would miss some backstory and plot elements that are important later on (the heart-ripping spell and the Alphas' origins, for example, not to mention some of the reasons why Harry and Murphy have such a dynamic relationship). The series does get much better by the third book; no argument there, but I would suggest reading the whole thing. |
Thanks for heads up. As far as Nightside, I can't imagine it lending itself to a short story format. Nightside is a very elaborate world, so trying to introduce the reader to the world as well as moving the story along at the same time would pretty much result in what you described. |

<--- I think I know what you guys are talking about...
That said, I'm super psyched for Ghost Story. The Dresden Files has only gotten better since it began, and it started pretty darn good. There honestly hasn't been a book that was bad, or an adaptation that I didn't enjoy. Great story, great characters, great plot, great setting and universe, great action. I <3 it so much. There is pretty much nothing I can fault about it other than the wait. I think now that Codex Alera is done, we'll see more than one book a year since he's focusing on Dresden pretty much solely. AND IT WILL BE AWESOME. BTW, funny story. I passed a western store on my way to college last year and stopped in on a whim. I am now the proud owner of a black, canvas duster (because leather ones are more expensive than life). Hell's Bells indeed. |
I read side jobs before Changes because Barnes and Noble was out of Changes, figuring "meh, its just short stories from in between the books". Then I read the last short story and kinda spoiled the ending of Changes. Sad panda. |

<--- I think I know what you guys are talking about...Sup. Oh.... hey... how's it been going? Sorry I haven't been returning your... telepathic call things. I've been busy with, uh, stuff. No no, it's not because I'm hanging out with the Knights of the Cross or anything. The coin? Oh well, I'm sure I have it somewhere, no need to call your buddies or anything >.> |
