I haven't tried Amnesia: Dark Descent and I don't plan to.

Scariest game i've played would have to be Dead Rising.

Yes, yes. I know. Some of you wouldn't even find that scary. >.<

Mmm... Mine would have to be this one section from Knights of the Old Republic 2.

Alright, during the tutorial/beginning level, Peragus (which is a mining station built into an asteroid), things start taking a turn for the creepy after this warship suddenly appears and docks with the station. After that:

-You find that the miners were all horrifically murdered (via poison gas).

-The one responsible was an (in it's own right, also rather creepy) HK-47 lookalike droid that you'd met a bit earlier on.

-After dealing with the droid, boarding the warship and suddenly getting assaulted by these 'Sith Assassins' that (to me) looked like they were wrapped in black bandages.

-Finding that everyone on the bridge was also massacred.

-Finding that the medical bay was also completely killed. What makes this creepy was the fact that you could find a video recording of this med bay officer about this Sith corpse they'd found that had suffered a ton of injuries (I.E. every single bone in his body was broken many, many times). They'd decided to store the corpse in this huge liquid-filled tank in the center of the med-bay. Right in the middle of her recording, you hear the glass shattering in the background, the 'corpse' say something (I can't remember now), and the med-bay officer screaming.

-Eventually, you find your way to a corridor that leads into another section of the mining station. The whole place is poorly-lit, with the lights flickering on and off as you go down. Your male party member tells you he's getting a bad feeling, and the music playing is very slow and ominous.

-Once you're a good ways down the corridor, your character suddenly comes to a stop, then slowly turns around. At the end of the hallway, you see the aforementioned Sith Lord, and get a close-up of him. His whole skin is a deathly, ashen gray, and is covered in tons of scarring. He speaks with a rasping, Scottish voice. One of his eyes is rolled back into his head, and what looks like tissue/muscle around the eye is plainly visible.

-Your other party member, an old lady, tells you to go on ahead without her, then runs forward with a sword and locks the door behind her.

-As you're running through the remainder of the ship (thankfully, without any more enemies), you're treated to another cutscene of the old woman engaging in a duel with the Sith Lord. She loses. Badly. As you later find out, she got her hand cut off, but still managed to survive.

...Yep. I swear, by the time that was all over and done with, my heart was pounding the first time I played through. If only Obsidian had had more time to give more moments like that... /sigh

Mine has to be the original Clock Tower, and I didn't even PLAY the game. I was too scared to. But I wasn't scared enough to not watch my brother play it.

Man. Scissorman scared the HELL out of me. The other things in the game didn't help, whether it be that murderous St. Bernard (perhaps inspired by Cujo?) or those creepy ghost kids singing a song about a guy taking off another guys head with a pair of scissors.

Snip, snip, snip, off goes his head... Bright red... bright red...

I do not find monster closets scary. The first 3 silent hill games could get into your head back in the day. Man have they come off the rails in later games though.

Amnesia is definitely the scariest but at the same time is a master piece of a real survival horror game

Tell me about it. I think we all crapped ourselves the first time we saw Pyramid Head in action.

Probably the scariest thing in Silent Hill though that got to me was in Silent Hill 3, the mirror room. It's a room of seemingly no consequence, as there isn't anything to collect inside of it. There's a big ol' mirror there too, and you see your reflection in it. About that time, though, you may notice that there's something draining into the floor drain on the other side of the mirror. You look at it... and then it starts happening on your side. BUT IN REVERSE.

The stuff is coming out of the floor drain, and is starting to cover everything in the room, whether it be the wall, floor, or ceiling. You look back to the mirror and HOLY CRAP YOU LOOK LIKE A BLOODY MESS. And sure enough, it starts happening to YOU too as the room is fully enveloped in whatever the hell sort of stuff is coming out of the drain. Back to the mirror, you notice that your reflection has STOPPED. Like, in place, like time has just frozen. At this point, you'll want to book it OUT of this nightmare because if you hadn't already notice, you've been taking damage this entire time from whatever the hell is happening here. If not, well...

DOOM.

Silent Hill 3, without a doubt. Because of moments like the Mirror room. This wasn't a rare moment, once or twice in the game thing, this was every other bloody event. The first time I played it a friend and I sat down late at night and ran through the entire thing in one sitting. My hands actually shook during many of the moments. And I consider myself well fortified against the horror genre. Could barely sleep that night.

Hats off to Silent Hill 3, even now, years later.

The original Silent Hill. Not the scariest game anymore, but my experience with it.

The game had just come out, I went to my buddy's house who had just gotten it. We waited until 1:00 in the morining. This was a big deal, since we were like, what, 8?

3 hours later, we're shaking and whimpering in his pitch black basement while freaky **** just jumps and crawls around on the screen.

Didn't sleep for 4 days 0.o

The first boss (Executioner) and last (optional) boss in the Sony Playstation II game called: Castlevania: Lament of Sorrow scared me quite a bit.

Also, I remember finding the demo of Silent Hill that I played on my PC. I couldn't sleep that night. O.o

Silent Hill 2. Silent Hill games don't really seem to rely on cheap thrills. Hell I know where something is (roughly /cry) and when it finally attacks me I'm still scared of it.

Silent Hill for PS.

I played that game completely in the dark, at night, alone; and just thinking about that noise the radio would make when enemies were near still gives me the creeps.

I remember I think the game name was manhunt, or something, meant to be a bit scary I don't remember if it was or not. Maybe suspenseful, but its was definitely one of the first to pioneer into scary games.

for some reason I found duke nukem quite scary when I was young playing it, particularly the parasites. Also back when, Turok seeds of evil, got pretty scary on those dark levels.

I haven't really played much of any thriller games since, either through not having a council or lack of interest in them, never played any much to feel scared of them.
