Veteran award hoax...Free WoW Copy.

I just received a fake blizzard e-mail saying "thank you for being a veteran player...have a free copy of WoW to give to a friend...click here and enter the game code..."

Sounds fun and a great idea... They even sent a CD key, but it's a hoax watch out! Unless a Blizzard employee says the opposite :P

Alright how do you know it's a hoax? I'm curious. If it's a phishing attempt I fail to see how it works since you can log into battle.net directly and put in the CD key. Did you try it out?

That sounds very fishy to me...

I wouldn't follow any links on that e-mail in any case.

It's important to note that one of the very common phishing tricks used by account thieves is to copy a legitimate e-mail and modify the links to point to malicious websites.

Always confirm the routing headers, even if you think that the e-mail is legitimate:

Looks legit. Only link in the email is battle.net (and yes, the link itself actually goes there not a phishing site).

My point is that while this particular e-mail is legitimate, one with similar wording received in the future may not be. So always check.

As stated before beware of this:

Oh, I agree 100%. Just seems to be a lot of interest in this particular email (there's posts popping up elsewhere as well asking if it's legit), and in this particular case only it seems to be.
